1992 FOCYTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR Co.coaches -. FRANK PODRAZA and KIM JOHNSON

Hitchcock-Tulare

Frank Podraza Kim Johnson

"We trust each other," commented veteran coach Kim Johnson. "That's the reason it works for us." The unusual mcoaching situation at Hitchcock- Tulare, which started with a co-op agreement in 1985, has resulted in eight straight playoff appearances by the Patriots, with a runner-up trophy in 1986 and a championship last fall.

Johnson runs the defense, and Podraza the offense in the unususal two- man situation. It marks the first time that the coaches association has honored co-coaches as Coach of the Year.

Page 7: COACHES ASSOCIATION€¦ · CHRIS SCHULTZ, Hurlcy Chris Schultz has coached in Hurley for just two seasons - result: two Class "B" state volleyball champions. Twelve of her fourteen

1992 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR NEIL GOTER, Marty

Neil Goter guided an inexperienced Marty team to the South Dakota Class "B" Cross Country Championship last fall, using his patented "slow start" philosophy.

Although they don't put in a lot of off-season miles, Goter brings his runners to their peak in late fall. He emphasizes the value of team depth and the team concept, lacing four of his runners in the top sixteen to win the title.

1992 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR CHUCK SEURER, Hoven

Five years ago, when Hoven had no cross country coach, the school custc-

dian, a former Hoven High track star and an avid runner, Chuck Seurer, took over the program.

Last year his extraordinaq effort resulted in a South Dakota State Cross Country Championship for Hoven -- an honor he modestly passes on to his team. For his dedication he has been named the Girls Cmss Country Coach of the Year.

1992 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR SHEILA HUTH, Hurley

The first time that Hurley had a team qualify for the state basketball tournament, coach Sheila Huth and her team made the most of it, capturing the State Class "B" title last spring.

Huth, a Wakonda native, had some excellent training as she worked with Ron Flynn and the powerful Wakonda dynasty before taking the reins at Hurley in 1991.

1993 GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEAR MARK BELLUM, Watertown

In four years of coaching, Mark has moved his Watertown girls into the top echelon of South Dakota gymnastic teams.

A University of South Dakota graduate, Bellurn's winning philosophy includes this item, "Having the girls feel good about themselves and their effort!'

Page 11: COACHES ASSOCIATION€¦ · CHRIS SCHULTZ, Hurlcy Chris Schultz has coached in Hurley for just two seasons - result: two Class "B" state volleyball champions. Twelve of her fourteen

1993 WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEAR BOB HIRSCH, Milbank

The Milbank wrestlers won 21 straight duals and meets last season but were edged by Watertown by a mere half point in their drive for the Class "A" state championship.

Bob has built an outstanding program in his eight years as head coach of the Bulldogs, but he is quick to share this glory, "More than anything, it's an honor for a group of hard-working kids and for our program:' he points out.

His teams have been in six Class "B" tournaments, ending 1992 as the runner-up and win- ning their first championship in 1993. Welke has posted an outstanding 27&89 record.

1993 GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR SUSAN HEITMANN, Britton

The Britton girls golf team, coached by veteran Susan Heitmann, posted their third Girls State Class B golf title in the p ~ b t five years last spring. "I am very lucky to have girls who are dedicated. The high school season is really so short that the players must work a lot on their own in the off season to be good. They should start at an early age and dwelop good work habits to become pnoficient," coach Heirmann pointed out.

Coach Garry has been the head football coach at the school for rhe past six years, capturing the Big Eight Championship last year. He spent several years as an assistant with the Sioux Falls O'Gorman Knights before com- ing to Madison.

Begeman, a native of Parker and a former Augustana basketball great, is also the coach of the O'Gorman boys basketball team. He is quick to give the girls on his tennis team credit for attaining success by working hard on their own during the off season.

1993 OFFICIALS OF THE YEAR COLIN K A P I W , Yankton and MARGE EVJEN, Sturgis

Colin Kapitan

The first two officials to be honored by rhe S.D.H.Sf2.A. have certainly paid their dues.

Colin Kapitan has been officiating South Dakota high school sports for 35 years. He has worked 22 stare basketball tournaments and has been a football playoff official since the playoffs began. Perhaps his most lasting efforts, however, are in the off-season najning of young officials and in his interest in mising the level of competence and pfofessi~nalism in officiating.

Mage Evjen has been a pioneer in the gymnastics movement in South Dakota. She has, in addition to coaching and twhiig, spent twelve years as a very able judge for the sport. She has judged 20 regional meets and is a past-president of the state judges association.

Volunteers do everything there is to do in Special Olympics and more. Thw are fund-raisers and cheerleaders, administrators and food handlers, chauffeurs and chaperones, trainers and coaches, huggers and publicists, policy- makers and trash collectors, friends, comrades and supporters of Special Olympians.

They serve without salary, without recognition, without honors or awards. And Special Olympics could not do without them - their devotion, their work and their love

So thank you, volunteers. You represent the highest values of the human spirit. And you get your thanks, not in money or words of praise, but through what you do for Special Olympics

For, as the poet E.A. Robinson said, "There are two kinds of gratitude; the sudden kind we feel for what we take. The larger kind we feel for what we give!'

And that larger kind of gratitude is what we feel for you!
