Key Points
• Correct grip
• Correct footwork (no crossing of feet)
• Ready stance in receiving position
• Transferring skills – USING THEM – into matches (even if losses
occurred)
• Need lots of shadow play (helps consistency and technique)
• Beware consistency of beginner (avoid bad habits)
• Start physical training – develop
• Exposure to different styles
• Timing (slow down, control, different paces)
• Learn to anticipate the ball
Key Points Continued

• Basic footwork, remaining stationary or moving poorly
• No tactics or strategies
• Lack of quality push
• Practice, practice, practice
• Weight transfer
• Legal serves
• Do it right the 1st time
• Right equipment for the player
• Use spin …..not flat out attack
Goal Setting
• increase motivation to achieve
• increase satisfaction and self-confidence
• get more out of training sessions
• improve skills and performance
• prevent boredom — working to achieve goals makes training more
challenging and fun
• develop a performance ‘ethos’
• most people have a destination in mind when they go for a drive, and as a
coach you need to make sure your athletes know where they are heading
Effective Goal Setting
• SMART > Specific > Measurable > Actions > Realistic > Time limited
• Write goals down
• Set short, medium, and long-term goals
• Set a combination of process, performance and outcome goals
• Set goals for training and competition
• Visualise yourself achieving your goals
• Always remember to acknowledge the successful achievement of your
goal

common and unique phases of development for participants
at the active lifestyle, sport and high performance sport
phases
• TTSA has then used this model to build our athlete pathway
