Cholera and Coldstream

I t’s over 160 years since the Borders was last caught up in a cholera

epidemic, the worst being in 1832 the result of inadequate water

supply and sanitation. A Coldstream resident however has just

returned from tackling cholera by spending several months as a

Coldstream Open Flower Show 2018 Spring seems to be springing into action ahead of time. Not only are snowdrops showing their delicate blooms, but we have also seen daffodils just ready to burst. If this keeps up we will have bumper crops and a fabulous display of flowers throughout the year. Our Flower Show date is set for Saturday 15th September 2018. Yes, time to start braving the weather to clear up our gardens and prepare the soil for the myriad of seeds we will be putting in. Potatoes are already being chitted and we know a few green fingered fellows who are already bringing on seeds indoors. Our schedules will be out by the time you read this and remember you can pick and choose what you want to enter as you have plenty of time to decide, but do join in as it is lots of fun. Whether nurturing plants and seedlings is your thing or maybe it is finding the ultimately tasty recipe from all the books on your shelf, perhaps you love creating new items from textiles or just love catching that perfect moment on film, there is something for everyone at every age. Our Coffee Morning is to be held on Saturday 2nd June from 10:30am in the British Legion and as always there will be a wonderful array on sale. Sadly, at our AGM, we bid farewell to our Chairwoman Ella Purves and we give her all our best wishes after doing such an excellent job of guiding us, finding great solutions to age old problems and helping us to be such a cohesive committee. Ella assures us that she will still be entering classes at the Flower Show this year. We were then very lucky to welcome Miss Susan Burnett into the Chair and we know that her great efficiency and sense of fair play bodes well for all of us in continuing the Flower Show. One of our Committee Members, Miss Claire Livingstone also stood down and her zest and vigour for so many different classes and sections will be missed. A great

advocate for the younger generations Claire always brought the element of youth and initial wonder to our Show and we hope that her forthcoming endeavours will bring her great joy. Our Chairwoman Miss Susan Burnett and I would like to thank all of our Committee Members and helpers for the tremendous work that they do throughout the year. If you, or someone you know, would like to join our Committee we would love to hear from you. With new hands and old we are a very balanced Committee and our workload is spread evenly so that everyone can enjoy the Flower Show. If you would like a schedule or for more information contact Susan on 01890 882562.

Coldstream Premier Cru - Sunday morning cycling club The New Year has been and gone and all these resolutions should now be kicking in. Spring is just round the corner and before you know where you are it will be mid summer. Make a start on your fitness regime by joining Coldstream Premier Cru Cycling Club every Sunday for a pedal around our beautiful countryside. There is no joining fee and no membership to pay. Just come along on a roadworthy bike on Sunday mornings. We usually stop somewhere for coffee but still manage to cover a very easy fifty miles or so. We meet and leave every Sunday at 9:00am in the Court House Car Park. We then cycle to Kelso Square for 9.30am where we are joined by more like minded cyclists. From there we can and do go all directions in search of a good coffee and cake stop. We have lots of tried and tested stops which we use regularly. The pace is easy (approx 15mph average) but a reasonable level of fitness is required. No one will be left behind but if you don’t feel up to going the full distance you can drop out at any point. The whole world can be put to rights from a bicycle saddle and often is. The only thing we do insist on is the wearing of a Cycle Helmet…..no helmet...no ride! Under 16s should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Its a great way to keep fit and, after a few Sundays you will feel a huge improvement in your own cycling abilities! You know you want to give it a try so just turn up on Sunday morning. Everyone is welcome.

Community Café opening

on Tuesdays! Everyone is welcome at this friendly drop in café. The project is hosted by the Community Trust, which provides a perfect town centre location in the Community Centre, while Scottish Borders Council provides tutor support. COLDSTREAM SWI At the time of writing, Coldstream SWI are busy preparing to celebrate their 90th anniversary in March. With so many institutes throughout the country closing due to lack of members or lack of interest in serving in office- bearer roles, it is quite an achievement for us to get to 90. The committee hope that they have put together an evening (with an Edwardian theme) that members and invited guests will enjoy. We got off to a rousing start with our first meeting of the year when Kirsty from local charity BARK came and spoke to us about the invaluable work they do housing unwanted/homeless animals and finding new homes for them. Our February meeting was a talk from one of the creators of Ooft! Sauce (available at your local butchers). Our penultimate meeting will be a talk by someone from the charity Knitted Knockers. At this stage all we know is that the charity knits prosthetic breasts for women who have undergone mastectomies. We shall find out more in April. We end the year with our AGM and then start preparing the schedule for the following year. If anyone has a particular skill/hobby that they would like to demonstrate or done something/been somewhere they think we might be interested in hearing about please do get in touch. We will be holding a coffee morning on 28 April when part of the proceeds will go towards the charities we have supported this year.

Coldstream Pipe Band The Pipe Band is putting on a concert on 6th May in the Community Centre ably supported by the Lynnella School of Dance and other enter-tainers. Tickets are £5.00 (concessions £3.00) and will be available from Clarks Newsagents. Bring your own refreshments. The Band con-tinues to meet on Monday nights in Coldstream School at 7:00pm for tuition and practice. New members are always extremely welcome. Please contact the Pipe Major (Duncan Bell) on 07890587578.

The Poppy Project 2014 - 2018 It's all go this year and some of us have managed to knit 300 poppies (or more) since Remembrance Sunday! Coldstream Primary School is joining the display teams this year and we have a range of poppies made in all different ways and styles. We hope to make it a real WOW as it is our last year for the WWI Centenary and we have opened things up nationally and internationally. So get in touch with family and friends abroad or in the UK and see if they can send us just one poppy before October, then we can incorporate them into the displays. We are looking for donations and a list will be going up on the town noticeboard of all the things we need, but the main thing at the moment is black cloth, lots of it as we have run out. Cotton, polycotton, polyester all of these are fine. We always have space for anyone who wants to join in and you don't need to be part of one of the display teams just get in touch [email protected] or 01890 883072 or 07943 872356. The rejuvenation of the War Memorial Gardens is on track to be completed by 11th November, so you will see more improvements as we get closer to our target date. We need volunteers for the Candlelight (11th November) and the Big Count (10th & 11th November). We would like the children to be the ones who do the Big Count with a few adults. Nothing strenuous just a few streets where you count how many poppies are on display in peoples gardens/windows/gates etc. If you want to join in please, please get in touch and let's make the final year of the Centenary one where everyone has taken part in some way, just like they did 100 years ago. Thank you all for your support.

COLDSTREAM GATEWAY ASSOCIATION We are pleased to report that Coldstream in Bloom has been successful in receiving a grant award of £1,500 from Hudson

Hirsel which will allow us to place a hanging basket on each of the lamp posts from the bottom of Guards Road up to Leet

Haugh Estate. The Council will be fitting the brackets for these shortly so they will be ready for the Summer flower planting.

Coldstream in Bloom has also been chosen as one of the beneficiaries of the latest round of Co-op Community Fund Awards

and we would ask for your support by voting for us. You can make Coldstream In Bloom your chosen cause by signing into

your online account at www.coop.co.uk/membership If you’re not already a Co-op member, go to the same web page and

click “Become a Member” - it’s only £1 to join! We hope to use the money raised here to replace the flower containers

outside the Community Centre which are beyond repair and to add some new containers around the town.

In conjunction with Scottish Borders Council we are using the vouchers which we won at last year’s Floral Gateway Competition for winning the “Large Village” Category and a “Quality of Life Award” to purchase a memorial seat to be placed in the garden behind the War Memorial. This seat should be in place before Summer. Any individual or business who might be interested in sponsoring the planting of any of our containers, please contact our Chairman Mr Will Murray on 01890 882661.

It’s that time of year again when we are thinking of planting our summer gardens. We will once again be holding a Coldstream in Bloom Garden Competition and this year the categories and prizes will be as follows:-

Best Business Display - Winner’s prize Best Floral Display - Winner and Runners-up prizes Best Patio Garden - Winner and Runners-up prizes Best Low Maintenance Garden - Winner and Runners-up prizes

Gardening trends have changed over the years with many people going for low maintenance gardens due to a shortage of space and time. There will be a short list of gardens chosen by the committee and the final judging will be take place during the week commencing 30th July again by judges from outside the community, thus making it fair and impartial. On a different note, but nevertheless part of the Gateway Association, the Christmas lights display was once again very successful and much admired. It is hoped to develop it even further for Christmas 2018.

SOCIAL & LITERARY SOCIETY The Lit meets twice a month on Monday evenings at 7.00 pm in the Parish Church Hall. 2018 opened with the dreaded lurgy going round! Our first speaker, Janet O’Kane had to cancel so Peggy Helliwell stepped into the breach with one of her quizzes which was enjoyed by everyone! Our second speaker Euan McIver had to call off on doctor’s orders but luckily Janet was able to take over his slot and members enjoyed an excellent talk with a lively Q & A session. On February 5th Kenneth McLean gave a most interesting presentation on the War Memorials in Berwickshire. It was incredible the differences in style and presentation in one county ranging from the very ornate to the plain and simple but all honouring men who had given their lives for their country. On February 19th Stephen Whitehorne will be showing his photos of “The Hirsel in all Seasons”. Margaret Urwin should have been with us on March 5th but due to ill health has had to call off so watch out for posters advertising the speaker for this meeting. 19th March is our A.G.M. and the Social Evening is on April 9th. Our outing this year is on Monday 4th June and is to The Transport Museum in Glasgow so look out for posters for this too!

Coldstream and District Local History Society

The meeting on March 1st starts with the AGM at 6.45 followed at 7.30 by Mrs Margaret Jeary who will speak on the subject of Borders Life in the 1850s.

The speaker at the meeting on April 5th is Mr Norrie McLeish who will tell us about the Great Hawick Election Riot of 1857.

Our final meeting of the season is on May 4th when Mrs Martha Andrews will present Borders in Blood, a talk written by Mr Richard Moore.

Our summer field trip takes place on 7th June when we will visit the North Charlton Farm Household and Farming Museum at 7.00pm.

All meetings are open to all, members free, non-members £1. Our website contains details of projects, research etc. as well as our programme. The website address is www.coldstreamhistorysociety.co.uk

Coldstream’s Heritage Ltd Our Community Interest Company has conditional

approval from the Community Council to erect a

visitor-information board at the Braeheads, on the

grassed area and near the lay-by. It’s a popular spot

for visitors to take in the views, take photos, snack

and relax. The information on the board would

include: facilities in the town e.g. toilets/parking;

local attractions, a brief history of the area and up-to

-date news on any significant events in the town e.g.

Civic Week. It would be partly funded by the Flodden

1513 Club and local businesses.

200 CLUB The Community Centre is growing in popularity but is expensive to run and the Trust board is looking for another 20-30 locals to join the 200 Club, which would make a difference to the finances. Application forms can be obtained from Pat Fulton (01890-882791), Mary Murray (01890-882661) or from Marley or Adrian at the Community Centre (01890-883332). Subscriptions are £5 per month and the prizes are very good, at £500 per month.

COMMUNITY WEBSITE Kay Slater, a board trustee, and Andrew Parsons have been instrumental in creating a new website which should prove very popular for residents and visitors. It will become available from mid-March and will include information for visitors, recreational and leisure facilities for locals, information on the facilities available in the community centre, local trades and businesses, how to save energy, the Hudson Hirsel Fund and a highlight of the main attractions in the area. In mid-March, look out for www.coldstreamcommunity.com Local businesses are being asked to pay £10:00pa for a feature on the website. These charges would need to be reviewed annually.

ENVIRONMENT Volunteers in the Coldstream Men’s Shed have been very busy creating seating for the tree trunks at the war memorial grassed area and these should be installed soon. The Gateway Association and Honour our Troops are arranging extra seating for that area. Through trust volunteers, a slippery path at Jacob’s Well woodland is being improved and the image across shows the latest position but by the time the reader views this Community News, the job should be complete. The litter mess at the lorry park/adjacent woodland has been cleared and will be reviewed regularly. The Council has installed two litter bins.

HEAVY LORRIES ON COLDSTREAM HIGH STREET A comprehensive report has been lodged with Coldstream Community Council and afterwards it will be issued to Scottish Borders Council and other interested bodies. Digital copies for members of the public will be available later. The HGV report was an agenda item at the Community Council meeting on 15th February but was not discussed. It is hoped that the report will be finalised shortly and issued to Scottish Borders Council, local MPs and MSPs as well as other appropriate bodies. In general terms, the volume of HGVs travelling through Coldstream on a daily basis continues to cause much concern. The survey which lead to our report found that:

Virtually 50% of all the HGVs passing through our town are the largest 6 axle 44 tonne articulated variety.

On average in our sample we found that 18.75 HGVs pass through Coldstream every hour Monday to Friday. This equates to 225 per day, 1125 per week and 58,500 per year (not counting 6:00pm to 6:00am and weekends). It also means that on average an HGV passes through the town every 3.2 minutes.

In terms of the largest 6 axle 44 tonne articulated vehicles, in our sample an average of 9.3 pass through Coldstream every hour Monday to Friday. This equates to 112 per day, 558 per week and 29,016 per year, again discounting 6:00pm to 6:00am and weekends. It also means that on average, a maximum size HGV passes through every 6.5 minutes.

Of all the 947 HGVs counted in our survey, 66.6% or two thirds were non local, i.e. not from the Scottish Borders or Northumberland). Only one third of the HGV traffic appears to be local companies and organisations.

These statistics highlight the concerns shared by many of you in our community and almost all the correspondence received by the CCN on this subject regards the volume of HGV traffic on our High Street as dangerous and undesirable.

KEITH HOUSE & AFFORDABLE HOUSING (2

apartments beside the Community Centre) It should be made clear to readers that this project will only proceed if 100% grant funding can be obtained from external grant funding bodies. Through grant-funded stages 1 and 1A, we are taking expert advice on the condition of the property, VAT, the structure, tenancy management and finances and the conversion into 2 apartments. A grant application for a conditional purchase has been lodged with the Scottish Land Fund with a decision due in March.

COMMUNITY ACTION PLAN (CAP) This is being finalised and will be available for public attention in late March. Thanks are extended to the community steering group and the consultant, Creetown Initiative Ltd.

COMMUNITY CENTRE – MAJOR EVENTS Saturday 16th June - Beer Festival 12 noon until 11pm with the usual 12 real ales, other drinks for non-beer drinkers and grub. Other events being planned are Poddlies and Andante concerts and the exact dates will be advertised in due course. In case anyone is wondering, the Poddlies are a small, very entertaining Eyemouth-based male voice choir.

Honour Our Troops

We're all busy with The Poppy Project, but we still found time to host a Coffee Morning on the 27th January which raised just over £300 so thank you to everyone who attended, donated and gave a helping hand as we really do appreciate everyone's efforts. Our next Coffee Morning is on the 21st April so if you have any items for the tombola or raffle between now and then just pop them in to Ann Martinson at 16 Priory Bank, Coldstream or contact her on 01890 883941. We are still looking for Marshals, so if you are over 18 and fancy giving up a little bit of your time then get in touch. It is lots of fun, benefits the communities that we do it for and adds to your talents and skills. Thank you all for your support throughout the year.

COLDSTREAM COFFEE MORNINGS

PARISH CHURCH GUILD The Guild meets twice a month on Wednesday evenings at 7.00 pm in the Parish Church Hall. Our meetings are open to everyone, male or female, everyone is welcome! 2018 opened with the Guild welcoming David Taverner who gave a most interesting talk on the people and the Church that he attended when he went to London to work as a young man. He certainly came across some interesting and well known folk! As a departure from the norm on 24th January the Guild enjoyed a Burns Lunch at the Newcastle Arms Hotel instead of an evening meeting. This was voted a great success! On 14th February the Guild will welcome Phil McLean who will show his Wildlife Slides and on 28th February Louise Washington is giving a demonstration of Needle Felt Craft. On 14th March Hamish Reid, one of the Volunteer Guides, will be talking about the History of Abbotsford and showing his slides. March 28th is our A.G.M. Our Outing this year is on Saturday 7th July and is to Kellie Castle which is near Pittenweem in Fife. Look out for posters nearer the time! The Guild is holding 2 coffee mornings, one on Saturday February 24th and one on Saturday April 14th, in the Church Hall at 10.30 a.m. Any donations for the Cake Stall or Raffle will be gratefully received.
