Artistic creation, as an expression of life and the circumstances which surround us, is a way to establish natural links between people and towns. The works in the MAXAM Collection show the evolution of painting and Spanish society, from 1900 up to today, through the eyes of some of the most important figures in fine arts in Spain.
The MAXAM Collection originated in Spain in 1899, since then a prestigious and critically and publicly renowned artist has been commissioned every year with an illustration for our famous calendar, popularly known as the "explosives calendar".
An initiative to express ourselves not only from a business perspective, but also by contributing from a social point of view. One of the goals of our company, ever since it was founded by Alfred Nobel almost 150 years ago, has been to contribute not only to industrial and economic progress, but also to the cultural development of the local communities and countries we operate in.
MAXAM arrived in Panama in 2008. A country full of opportunities in which to offer our technology and experience not only in the Canal expansion, as we have done by designing 80% of the blasting operations of this large project, but also in the development of mining and the construction of this nation.
A commitment to the future which we complement from a cultural perspective with this exhibition, which we are pleased

and proud to present at the Panama Interoceanic Canal Museum: “MAXAM Collection. Spanish painting since 1900.”
An exhibition which will help publicize and disseminate Spanish culture to the Panamanian society, and which I am sure will bolster and improve, even more, relations between Spain and Panama.

On 3rd September 2007 a large blast on the banks of the Panama Canal filled all Panamanians –not only those in attendance, but also those who were following the event through the media– with great joy. The Panama Canal expansion project started with enthusiasm, passion and expectation.
There, witnessing that historical moment, in my capacity as Director of Panama Interoceanic Canal Museum, whilst our work team collected pieces which we knew would form part of a historic event which would mark the aspirations of our country and allow it to meet the challenges of the 21st century, that unanimous, jubilant cry which passed through all who were present like a single voice made me reflect on the meaning of that explosion.
I remembered the hundreds of images of films and still photos that we treasure in our collection showing the many detonations needed to master our geography during the construction of the Panama Canal. I am still thrilled by the images of those blasts, especially the last one, which allowed the waters of the Chagres to flood the locks of the newly constructed canal. Now, many years on, a new blast catapults us firmly but confidently toward the expanded canal.
It was amazing to see how that tremendous noise, that blast, which was followed by many more over the following years, represented a boost for the future for

everybody in Panama: the legitimate aspiration for a better country, with opportunities and progress for all, and I was deeply grateful for a huge blast meaning so much for our country.
Over many years, MAXAM, the company created by Alfred Nobel in 1872, has not only devoted itself to outstanding works of engineering, but has also striven to ensure culture plays a prominent role in development. Its iconic calendar brought works of art which marked important moments in history, and which this year pays homage to and celebrates the Panama Canal Expansion with the illustration We were there at the Panama Canal, which will be exhibited in our Museum along with 58 other works of this magnificent collection.
We are grateful to MAXAM for its generosity in sharing this collection and for supporting culture and our museum.

THE MAXAM COLLECTIONLA COLECCIÓN MAXAM
Acquiring one new artwork per year, the MAXAM Collection began in 1899 with the commissioning of the painting that came to illustrate the company’s first calendar, issued in 1900.
The rise of advertising in the late XIX century made the poster –produced with relative ease by the printing presses of the time– one of its main tools.
The Parisian cabarets were among the first to realise the usefulness of posters and, with the help of Toulouse-Lautrec in 1891, they began using them to advertise their shows. It was then that poster art became a form of promotion, and from this creative art form came the idea for the first explosives calendar, which used the poster not just as an advertisement in itself, but as the base for a calendar.
But who thought of publishing the calendar? MAXAM was founded in 1872 in Bilbao (Spain) as the “Spanish Dynamite Powder Company. Alfred Nobel Privilege”. It grew quickly and its products and services began to reach across the country, with its activity aimed at the mining, quarrying and infrastructure markets,
13
while also commencing production of gunpowder and hunting cartridges.
Perhaps this market, made up not only of businesses, but also of individual consumers, led the Company to think about reaching out via a calendar that would also serve as a poster with which to promote its products, as was the case with the first almanac in 1900: mining powder, dynamite, shotgun ammunition, hunting powder...
The minutes from those early company meetings do not mention when it was decided that a calendar should first be issued, nor do they reflect subsequent decisions to issue later editions. In those years the company had dual headquarters in Bilbao and Paris, so maybe it was the influence of the city on the Seine which lead the management to decide to advertise by way of poster which, in turn, could serve as a calendar.
At precisely the same time, the company began its cultural patronage initiative –a pioneer effort within the Spanish industrial sectors–, which is continued today via the MAXAM Foundation.
The MAXAM Collection was, for a time, a faithful reflection of the sort of images sought by the general public. When there was no internet, no television or museum exhibitions accessible to the masses, the broadsheet calendar issued by the company each year was anxiously awaited, and the new edition would replace the old. It was thus that the explosives calendars became part

of the popular culture, so much so that the journalist Luis Carandell came to consider them as parts of “...the museum for those who could not visit museums...”
With the passage of time, the artworks that make up the MAXAM Collection have progressively reflected the new styles in art, as well as the social uses of these images. The visual bombardment to which we are subjected today makes many go unnoticed, but those that remain in our consciousness become memories, iconic representations of key moments. In this sense, the artworks that have illustrated the calendar over the past few years reflect new forms of painting, contributed by new artists, as befits our modern world.
In the century during which this collection has existed, the works acquired by MAXAM have established their own dialogue amongst themselves, with the images that came to symbolize a moment of our lives –and our common history– becoming reference points, inspirations, and even sources of recreation for later works.
It’s been over 140 years since the Company’s founding by Alfred Nobel, and more than 110 since it published its first calendar; the MAXAM Collection continues to be an example of how business management and cultural patronage can be successfully combined to become aallmark of both he sponsoring company and the society that has embraced this work.
