You’re in a large room with a zillion tables. A jobis on the line. The stakes are high in this economy.Everyone is ready to go, wearing a power suit, carry-ing portfolios, and looking confident. Are you there? Are you ready? Do you have a plan?

There IS a strategy to navigating a job fair, andthis article will help you identify effective ways toget the most out of your job fair experience. First, itwill discuss what you can do to prepare. Second, itwill explain what to do while you are at the job fair, and last, it will describe what to do after the job fairsince your search doesn’t end at 5:00.

Before the Job Fair• Identify your transferable skills. Employers are

looking for candidates who know what their skillsare and how they can be used effectively in theirorganization. Think about what you have to con-tribute to them. Keeping a story or two about yourcommunication skills, effective teamwork, or moti-vational talents might come in handy.

• Write an effective résumé that showcases yourskills and contributions. When you highlight yourcontributions, the employer knows that your effortshad a positive impact to your organization and youwill likely do the same for them.

• Have someone proofread your résumé beforemaking copies.

• Go to the Career Center website to find the listof registered employers for the Career Expo. Youshould spend time researching the company’s mis-sion statement, structure, future goals, etc. Take somenotes on each company to keep in your portfolio thatday. Don’t bring out your research in front of theemployer, but take breaks to review your notesbefore speaking to the next employer. Identify talk-ing points and think about how to start the conversa-tion.

• Identify organizations you want to visit and pri-oritize them. To settle your nerves, you may wish tovisit first with one or two employers that are on yourlist, but are not your #1 choice.

• Practice your handshake with a friend. Youshould have a firm, confident handshake, not limp ora bone crusher.

At The Fair• Utilize your strategy. Figure out where your first

employer is located. Review your notes for that com-pany, and have a couple conversation starters ready.

• Take initiative and start the conversation withthe employer. This demonstrates your confidence tothe interviewer.

• Remember that you may not get to spend much

time with the employer if there are other studentswaiting, so stay positive if the conversation doesn’tlast as long as you might have hoped. You can letthem know you would like to talk with them furtherabout how you might be an asset to their organizationand offer to leave a copy of your résumé and ask fortheir business card.

• After you meet with an employer, try to find aplace where you can take some notes about thatemployer. This will also give you a chance to reviewyour notes for your next employer so you are stillready to impress.

After the Career Fair • Reflect on the career fair. What did you do

well? What might you have done better? • Follow up on any employer leads you received

at the event, applying on the company’s website, signing up for an interview, or sending more infor-mation.

• Identify any companies you didn’t get a chanceto talk with, and follow up with them by submittingyour materials for any position you’re interested in orarranging an informational interview with one oftheir employees or recruiters.

Young Entrepreneurs Across Americayeaainternship.comThrough proven systems and field training we developexceptional young people into successful entrepre-neurs.Shared Goals: We are committed to learning everyday. Young Entrepreneurs Across America is a learningorganization. Each day brings a new challenge andanother lesson. We provide personal growth and unlim-ited career opportunities within Young EntrepreneursAcross America for our graduates.Shared Values:• Passion for keeping our promises.• Pride in taking the unlimited responsibility for results.• Loyal family-like relationships betweenpersonnel/partners.YEAA offers one main internship to college students. This internship provides students an opportunity todevelop real life business skills. By essentially runningtheir own exterior painting business during the summermonths, our interns will learn most of the main func-tions of a business owner. The major duties of our stu-dent interns are developing a marketing and businessplan, marketing the business, personally selling theservice, hiring employees, managing the crew, utilizingcustomer service, continuing ongoing training, analyz-ing profit statements (income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows), assuring the quality produc-tion of painting services, providing payroll numbers, and effectively communicating with customers, employ-ees and management.Young Entrepreneurs Across America is a programdesigned to help teach young students how to run a

small business. As a student in our program, you willdevelop communication and business skills through asummer of REAL BUSINESS WORLD EXPERIENCE.These skills will make you more attractive to full-timeemployers upon graduation, and better prepare you forthe real world that awaits. We are in• The business of TEACHING • The business of COACHING • The business of DEVELOPINGENTREPRENEURIALISM: The following summary isdesigned with the hope of conveying the "spirit" of theprogram by exploring some key concepts and policies. The manager candidate should make some effort tograsp these concepts and is even encouraged to dis-cuss them with parents, etc.GOAL: PROVIDE DAILY LEARNING FROM ACTUALEXPERIENCE. PROVIDE YOU THE ABILITY ANDRESOURCES TO TELL AN INCREDIBLE STORY TOANY FUTURE EMPLOYER THAT WILL SET YOUAPART FROM YOUR PEERS.The core of the program is development through entre-preneurialism. Our interpretation of entrepreneurialismis based upon two concepts:• Risk and reward• A skill may be understood through reading about it;however, a skill can only be acquired by doing it.We believe our program to be superior, in specifics, toany undergraduate business program in the countrybecause the experience gained is live; it is real. This iswhy our program is only for ""elite"" students. We pro-vide significant training and support, but it will be up tothe manager to make tough decisions, such as what todo with employees who show up late to work. Businesscourses cannot provide letters of recommendation fromsatisfied clients, or develop subordinates into promo-tions, or earn real profits. We provide this experienceby putting managers in a position of responsibility. Wedevelop entrepreneurs by putting students in the posi-tion of having to make real and tough decisions, andallowing them to reap the rewards and learn from their

mistakes. This is why our program is so special andwhy full-time employers are so attracted to theseexceptional students: individuals that are not afraid totake on the ultimate development opportunity eventhough it requires significant commitment and maturity. In view of our 21-year successful track record andproven systems, 95% of our managers succeed, but5% still fail. We have seen almost every situation imag-inable in the painting business, and we know that onlythe willingness of the manager to work hard and theability to take direction from us is required for success.Any manager candidate who is not prepared to givetheir full time best efforts during the summer is not theright type of candidate for our program. • The average profit earned in the summer last yearwas $10,000. A good range to consider, however, is$6,500-$10,000 (it should be noted that profit is notpaid by the number of hours worked, unless performingnon-sales duties). • The manager is ultimately responsible for his/her suc-cess in this program. This accountability is what drivesstudents to attain goals and achieve results. How manyuniversity students can boast to full-time employersthat they ran their own $50,000 business and earned a$10,000 profit?Recruiting: College of Business Administration

If you could place a classified ad for areference provider, it might read:

But it isn’t that easy! The truth is thatselecting references is a crucial task forsomeone who is conducting a job search. Dothis well and your search will be effective.Do it poorly and your search will surely fail.

Reference providers do not wanderaround with signs declaring, “Will write ref-erence letters for needy graduates.” Youmust find them, care for them and rewardthem when they assist you.

Your references must be able to providefactual information about your professionalskills. They are not your neighbors, familyfriends, relatives, Boy or Girl Scout leaders,or clergy. They may be a work supervisor, aninstructor who had you in class, or a facultyadvisor.

Before you formally ask a prospectivereference to write for you, there are severalthings you need to do. Provide him or herwith:• A copy of your résumé• The job description of the position forwhich you are seeking a reference• Assurance that if he or she so chooses, thereference may be provided confidentially. Inother words, select wisely and trust withoutreservation.

You also need to ask several questions:• Do you know me well enough to be a ref-erence?• Are you able to do this for my by xxxdate?• What will you say about me? • Is there other information that you needfrom me?

You should plan to identify five or sixreferences. You will probably select three tofour of them for each position for which youapply as you tailor your reference to theposition.

An effective reference will be able togive concrete examples of your integrity, verify that you have effective communica-tion skills, and comment on your ability tomanage and control the work environment. An effective reference will give specificexamples of the results of your work experi-ences and/or your professional development.

Some of your references will be availablefor several years; most, however, should bereplaced in the first three years of yourcareer as a professional.

There are specific details involved as youcare for your references:• Balance your references by including bothmales and females of various age and ethnicgroups• Ensure that the address and daytime phonenumber of your reference on your résumématches that on the written reference letter, and that it is correct.

• Do not select an individual who will nottell you what he or she will say about you,who does not know you, or who cannotcomplete the reference by the date you needit.• Keep your references informed of yoursuccesses and failures – via e-mail, phone,or in person.• When you land your job, send each of yourreferences a hand-written thank-you note.

You are in control of the process of locat-ing references who will write the letters youneed.

Be thorough as you find your references, care for them with attention to detail, andreward them with profuse thanks when yousecure your position. In other words, payproper attention to your references, and theywill take care of you.

The Care & Feeding of References

Career Fair Follow UpNow that you’ve survived the career fair,

you are probably wondering, “what do I donext?” The answer is that you want to con-tinue to show your interest in employers bysending them a follow-up thank-you note orby calling them if they indicate it is accept-able to do so. The main purpose of this is toreiterate your interest in their company andthe positions they have to offer.

It is best to follow up within a few daysof attending the career fair. You want toshow that you are eager and build on theconnection made at the event. The first stepis to review your notes and any company-specific materials you collected in order todecide which employers you would like tofollow up with.

It is important to make a good impres-sion on everyone you talk to, but you onlyreally need to follow up with those compa-nies you are genuinely interested in workingfor or maintaining a connection with. Youcan type, hand-write, or e-mail your letter. Itis also a good idea to include your résuméjust in case it was lost. Reviewing yournotes and company-specific materials canalso assist you in composing the letter.Including information from the conversationyou had with the recruiter as well as from

the print materials can help you tailor eachletter to that specific company. This isimportant in order to help the recruiterremember you and for you to show why it isthat you want to work for that companyspecifically.

A follow-up phone call may also beappropriate if the recruiter indicated it wasacceptable to do so. Review your notes andprint materials from the employer and prac-tice what you want to say before you makethe call. At this time, you can ask therecruiter any additional follow-up questionsyou may have and ensure that your jobapplication is complete.

You want to stand out against the rest ofthe eager candidates, right? Then follow upwith employers to make yourself morememorable!
