Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni Receives a $10,000 Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Grant

Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni, head of the Depart-ment of Pediatric Dentistry, has received a $10,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation for her research, “Factors Associated with Early Childhood Caries Among Young WIC-Enrolled Children.” The primary goal of the one-year study is to evaluate risk factors associated with non-cavitated and/or cavitated lesions among children aged 12 to 48 months who are enrolled at the University of Iowa’s Infant Oral Health Program.

Co-investigators on the grant include Drs. Arwa Owais and Tad Mabry, Pediatric Dentistry; Dr. John Warren, Preventive & Community Dentistry; Dr. Fang Qian, Biostatistics and Research Design; and Leah Barshinger (D3).

Professor Emeritus Ronald Ettinger is a Guest Speaker at Meetings in Brisbane and Adelaide, Australia

Professor Emeritus Ronald Ettinger (Prosthodontics and Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research) recently traveled to Australia to attend the 6th Walkabout Conference, which was sponsored by the Australian Society of Special Care in Dentistry. The meeting was held in Brisbane on September 22-23. As a guest speaker, Dr. Ettinger presented “Special Needs Dentistry: An International Perspective” on September 22 and “Rational Dental Care: A Philosophy of Clinical Decision Making for Older Adults” on September 23.

Dr. Ettinger also traveled to Adelaide, Australia where he was a guest speaker at the South Australian (SA) Dental Service. His presenta-tions were “The Oral Health Needs of Functionally Dependent Older Adults” and “Oral Health Care of Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias.” Dr. Ettinger was also a guest at the Private Dentists Meeting: Residential Aged Care Dental Scheme, where he gave a talk, “The Oral Health of Functionally Dependent Adults and Treatment in Al-ternate Settings.”

Dental Alumna Dr. Sara Stuefen Returns to Ballet

Dance is the hidden language of the soul. (Martha Graham)

Dr. Sara Stuefen (DDS ’10), who has been practicing dentistry in Vinton for the past seven years, has another interest: ballet. She developed a passion for ballet be-fore she was three years old and began taking classes after turning three. Sara, who grew up in Ft. Madison, enjoyed ballet as part of the Top Hatters Studio dancers in Fort Madison, and she was also a member of the Fort Madison High School dance team; as a senior Sara was co-captain of the group. Going to college and then dental school meant Sara had to forego her ballet. Fifteen years later, though, she has once again become a ballerina through the Pointe School of Dance Adult Ballet in Marion, Iowa. (She and her husband, Matt, live in Ce-

dar Rapids.) Attending weekly classes, Dr. Stuefen enjoys the graceful moves of ballet as well as the struc-ture. Dr. Stuefen is currently also an adjunct faculty in the Department of Family Dentistry where she teaches senior dental students.

Resounding Success for the College of Dentistry’s Hosting of the "Bridging the Gap” Meeting

The “Bridging the Gap” AxiUm Consortium meeting, which was held in Iowa City September 27-29, was very successful. At least 40 dental schools attended the meeting, including the Universities of Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Maryland, Florida, Kentucky, Colorado, Texas (Houston and San Antonio), Washington, and Iowa, as well as Tufts University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Oregon Health Sciences University, and the University of Illinois-Chicago. Additionally, at least 10 private practices at-tended, along with Delta Dental of Iowa. The meeting averaged 184 attendees a day, including spon-sors.

Revenue cycle management topics in-cluded cash handling policies and proce-dures; insurance credentialing, contracting, and benefit analysis; e-claims, e-attachments, and e-preauthorization; e-referrals (e-Dossea demo); insurance eligi-bility/pre-access process; lock box (Wells Fargo demo); managing the Dental Wellness Plan patient population; and medical billing of sleep appliances and cranial anomaly ortho. The keynote speaker was Mike Brownlee from the UI College of Pharmacy. He spoke about pharmacy’s efforts with tele- pharmacy and what dentistry can learn from their experiences.

The AxiUm Consortium was formed to promote and support collaboration for clinical education, financial, and information technologies resources amongst members of dental institutions. Survey responses were overwhelmingly positive: A very big thank you to the University of Iowa for their hospitality. You could tell that a lot of work went into the meeting, from the warm welcome from the cheerleaders, the party at the barn, the topics that were covered, and the tour of the school. Great job to the host school! Iowa did an excellent job. It was a very positive experience. The “bus adventure” barn social was a highlight! The summit was very well organized! Thank you. Great relationships and friendships are fostered here – great job! Lynn Conway was a great host! This was my first mid-year meeting and I was very pleased with the experience. Depending on the topics covered, I will come again. For additional photos from the meeting’s events, see page 6. Word Play: Shaggy Dog Story

The bell ringer at the cathedral had retired after many years of service, so the

priest placed an ad in the paper for a new bell ringer. The next day, a man came to apply for the job, but the priest couldn't help noticing that he had no arms. "How are you going to ring the bell with no arms?" he asked. "Let me show you,” the man replied. So they trudged up the many stairs to the bell tower. The man stood against the wall, got a running start and ran at full speed toward the largest bell. When he struck the bell with his face, it made the most beauti-ful sound that the priest had ever heard. Then the man ran at another bell and with the first bell still resonating, the harmony was magnificent. He ran again at a third bell, but this time he slipped and instead of hitting the bell, he skidded out the window and fell to his death on the ground below. The priest ran downstairs and outside, where a crowd had formed around the dead man's body. "Who is this?" the crowd asked. The priest replied, “Well, I don't know his name, but his face rings a bell."

The Carver College of Medicine Office, Office of Faculty Affairs and Development is pleased to announce a partnership with the Research Development Office at the University of Iowa. They will be offering a grant writing workshop on October 24. Dr. M.S. (Peg) AtKisson earned a PhD in neuroscience from Tufts University but has spent most of the last 16 years thinking about grant applications. In 2001, she founded the grant and research development support office at Tufts University, where she and her team helps secure $140,000,000 in grant funding through 2010. She also worked for Grant Writers’ Seminars and Workshops from 2009-2016, providing training in grantsmanship and direct support for individual applicants.
