It is the student’s responsibility to have their official test results for the SAT Reasoning/Subject

and/or ACT tests sent directly to the colleges they are applying to.

The Algonquin Guidance Department does not

send scores nor do they include SAT or ACT scores on a student’s official transcript.

If you are planning on taking an October or November test, you will have the option of sending your scores to 4 colleges at no extra charge. Along with those 4 “free colleges”, you should list any other colleges you want your scores sent to at the time you register for the exam.

For SAT exams, you can change your score recipients until 11:59 PM (EST) on the Monday, one week after your scheduled test date by going to www.collegeboard.org and logging on to your account, then selecting the MY SAT tab.

THE APPLICATION

How to Apply to College Your application is the first and sometimes only impression the college will have of you. It should be correct, detailed, and have a clear picture of who you are.

Often, the quality of the application means the difference between acceptance and denial.

Set up an account with The Application

commonapp.org

. If a college is not affiliated with the Common Application, then go to that college’s website to access their application.

Read the directions for each Complete the application neatly and accurately. That means check spelling, correct dates, etc.

application carefully.

Have your application proofread by your parents and/or your counselor. Even if all of your colleges are using the Common Application, each college asks different questions:

future plans, supplements, payment options, etc.

ADMISSIONS COUNSELORS VISITS College Admission Counselors visits are posted on Naviance and will be updated as visits are scheduled. To Sign up for a meeting with a visiting college representative, please follow these instructions:

Log onto Naviance.

Click on “Visit Schedule” under the “Colleges” heading on the navigation bar.

Click on the “Sign Up” button next to the college you are interested in.

YOU MUST PRINT OUT A PASS from Naviance: o On the main page, select “Document Libraryo Select the “College Representative Pass” form.

” under the “From Your School” heading.

o Print this out, complete it and have it signed by your teacher AT LEAST ONE DAY PRIOR to the date of the visit.

A reminder will be emailed to you 24 hours prior to the visit.

You can always refer back to the list to confirm the date, time and location of a visit.

If you cannot make a meeting for which you are scheduled, you can remove yourself from the list by

clicking on “Cancel”. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT because it lets us and the college

representatives know how many people are attending the session.

A list confirming student attendance will be emailed to teachers following each College Representative visit.

REMINDER: You must have signed up on Naviance to attend a college representative visit and you must have a signed pass from your teacher if you are missing a class to attend the visit. These visits can be very helpful as it is often the representative who comes to ARHS who will be reading your application. So, if you are interested in a college and are able to attend it will be advantageous.

Financial Aid

There are generally three types of financial aid forms:

• FAFSA • CSS/Profile • College’s own form

The FAFSA is the federal form required by all colleges and universities. It is used to distribute federal monies available to students. The FAFSA form will be available online beginning October 1st at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students and parents can go on to the website now to register for their PIN number. You each need your own PIN number! Many private colleges and universities use the CSS/Profile to determine distribution of the college’s own funds. The registration form is available online at www.collegeboard.com under the heading “Pay for College”. You can also verify if any of your colleges require this form on the College Board website. The Profile can be completed now. Some colleges also have their own personal financial aid form. If they do have one, it will either be included in the application packet they send you or it will be mailed to you after they receive your admissions application. Massachusetts offers financial aid information and help through the website: www.mefa.org. MEFA — the Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority — is committed to making college more accessible and affordable. We are a not-for-profit self-financing state authority, not reliant on state or federal appropriation that serves students and families in Massachusetts, and out-of-state students pursuing higher education in Massachusetts.

Financial Aid is an ever evolving and complex process. Therefore we have an expert from MEFA scheduled to come to Algonquin on Monday, September 26th

at 7:00 p.m. to explain the intricacies of the process to parents. Scholarship Application Process On-going scholarships are available under Naviance “Resources” Tab and the Scholarship Tab. This site will be updated throughout the year. Most local scholarships are due in early spring and applications will typically be available after the winter holidays. Please be sure to continually check the Scholarship Tab in Naviance for updated information. Websites for Scholarship Searches:

TIPS FOR COMPLETING THE 2016-2017 COMMON APPLICATION The Common Application can be accessed at www.commonapp.org

COLLEGE SEARCH TAB:

The “College Search” tab is where you will search for schools to add to the “My Colleges” tab; these are the schools that will eventually receive your Common Application. You can search for schools by name, location, deadline, etc.

DASHBOARD:

The Common App dashboard is the central location to monitor your applications, including deadlines, requirements, and progress. The menu across the top will navigate you to different parts of the system to complete your application components. Once you have added colleges they will be displayed here.

COMMON APP TAB:

This is the universal application for all of your listed colleges. Be sure to fill in all required information.

PROFILE:

This is where you fill in your basic personal information (address, contact info, citizenship, etc). Be sure to add your social security number under “Citizenship” if you plan on applying for financial aid. Please see your counselor if you feel that your family financial circumstances warrant an application fee waiver.

FAMILY:

Basic information on your family. You will need to fill in your parents’ education level and occupation. You also will add your parents’ and siblings’ post secondary information. To do this, you will search for the college under “College Lookup.”

EDUCATION: This is where you enter specific information about Algonquin, including your dates of attendance, GPA and rank, senior year courses, counselor contact info, etc. Please refer to page 3

of this handout for important information needed to complete the Education section.

TESTING:

Fill in scores (ACT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, AP) that you wish to report. If you plan on taking a future test, please indicate the specific test. For test optional schools, you have the option to indicate which school should receive your test scores. To do this, remove your test scores from the section before submitting to a specific institution. You can then add them back to submit to schools that are not test optional. If the test scores are listed they will be provided to the school.

ACTIVITIES

: This is where you report activities you’ve been involved in (maximum of 10). Be sure to list your activities in the order of importance to you. Activities both in and out of school count, and may include arts, athletics, clubs, employment, personal commitments, and other pursuits. You should focus on activities you’ve been involved in since 9th grade unless it’s an activity you’ve done for years, such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, dance, etc. When describing each activity, you should limit the amount you write, focusing on the highlights of the activity. If you write too much, the text will be cut off.

WRITING:

The essay is an important part of your application as it personalizes your application. Take your time to complete a well written essay. You should do multiple revisions before uploading it to your application. If you’re stuck on your essay topic, you can talk to your English teacher and/or your Guidance Counselor.

PERSONAL ESSAY:

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

You may use this section to provide details of special circumstances or qualifications not mentioned in the application.

DISCIPLINARY HISTORY:

Please see your counselor if you have questions regarding this section.

MY COLLEGES TAB

You must first add a college to your “My Colleges” list before you will be able to use this screen.

: The “My Colleges” screen is where you will complete work for each college to which you intend to apply. This section gives general information on the college, including contact information, application deadlines, required fees, standardized test requirements (if applicable) and recommendation requirements.

QUESTIONS:

These are questions specific to the individual school. Make sure you answer the questions for each tab. This is also where you indicate your application type (Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, Rolling, etc).

RECOMMENDERS & FERPA:

This is where you sign the FERPA Release Authorization. This page will also show you how many teacher recommendations each individual college requires and allows. Since we use Naviance, you will not be able to assign teacher recommendations through the Common App. All teacher recommendations are being assigned through Naviance. Please refer to the “Matching Your Common App and Naviance Accounts” handout for instructions on how to link your accounts.

REVIEW AND SUBMIT – COMMON APP: In order to begin the submission process for a college, you must first have completed all sections of the Common App and all of the college’s questions. Once all required components are completed, you will be able to begin your Application Submission. This includes reviewing, print/previewing, paying, and submitting. Note: Submitting the Common App does not

*Note on payment: You can pay through “My Colleges” or the “Dashboard.” When you click “Continue” you will be routed to the school’s payment page. Once you have completed your payment, you will sign/date/submit.

automatically submit the Writing Supplement!

WRITING SUPPLEMENT:

Some colleges will have an additional writing prompt or an area to upload an additional document, such as a resume. If the writing supplement is optional for a specific college, a green check will appear. Please be sure that you have filled out all “optional” writing supplements.

REVIEW AND SUBMIT – WRITING SUPPLEMENT: Once you have completed the writing supplement and the Common App has been submitted to the college, this tab will give you the option to begin the submission process for your supplement.

Online Registration

The NCAA Eligibility Center has designed eligibilitycenter.org with you, the student-athlete, in mind. This is where you will find the tools and information you need to begin your college experience as a student-athlete. Allow at least 15 minutes to one hour to register completely. If you need to exit and come back at a later time, you can save and exit once your account has been created. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center by following these steps: 1. Visit eligibilitycenter.org and enter as a college-bound student-athlete.

2. Create an account by clicking on the “New Account” button at the top right corner of the

screen.

3. On the Account Creation page, provide a valid email address to create an account and begin the registration process. Be sure you provide an email address that will be active even after you complete high school.

4. On the About Me page, enter some quick facts, including your name, address, date of birth

and gender.

5. On the My Coursework page, enter the name and location of the high school you currently attend. If you have attended more than one school (including summer school or nontraditional, online or credit recovery programs) during grades 9-12, you must list every school you have attended. You must include all schools, even if you did not receive grades or credits. If you attended ninth grade at a junior high school located in the same school system in which you later attended high school, do not list the ninth-grade school.

6. On the My Sport page, select the NCAA sports in which you plan to participate. Provide

information about any non-scholastic or club teams you have practiced or competed with and any events you have participated in during your high school career.

Registration fee and waiver Your account will be eligible for processing once the registration fee is paid or waived. You must pay online by debit, credit card or e-check. The registration fee is $75 for students from the United States and its territories, and Canada. The registration fee is $130 for students from all other countries. You are eligible for a waiver of the registration fee if you have received a waiver of the SAT or ACT fee. This is not the same as a U.S. state voucher. You must have an authorized high school official submit your fee waiver documentation online after you complete your registration.
