A student’s application consists of many parts:• Online application (Common App or Institutional)• Application fee (fee waivers are available if you

qualify)• High school transcript • ACT or SAT scores• Essay or writing sample • Supplemental questions • Letters of recommendation

1. Direct to Institution- Application used only at that college- System wide application (example: University of Wisconsin and U of M)

2. Common Application (commonapp.org)- Includes specific writing prompts, teacher letter of recommendation, counselor letter of recommendation, supplemental questions- FERPA

What to do when your student is unmotivated or not on track?• Remember, this has to be their action plan• Continue to encourage them• Engage in communication often, let them do the talking, you

listen• Help them to identify their interests and strengths when

discussing possible career options. Start at the end.• College doesn’t always mean 4 years, it could be 2 or 1 – being

undecided is ok, not having insight into their desires for their future is not

A good place to start is to find the Net Price Calculator for each college your child is applying to

• Every college required to provide• Tool to estimate the net price to attend a particular college or

university• Check calculator of each interested institution

Once accepted and FAFSA is complete you’ll want to be ready to review your acceptance letters and understand your financial aid awards.

FAFSA--what is it? When to apply?The FAFSA helps the college of your choice and your local and federal agency’s provide a full list of possible financial aid options to each family based off the family status and income. They may offer things like;

Subsidized Loans, Unsubsidized Loans, Perkins Loans, Parent Plus Loans, Work Study Grant, Other Grants (Federal and MN)

Helpful tips:• Prepare family taxes ASAP from 2018• Apply after October 1. Deadlines vary by school (if you wish to have full access to all aid options be sure

to meet colleges deadlines).• Must be Filled out each school year for Federal aid (some schools may require FAFSA for merit

scholarships, too)

Encourage your child to seek out the admission reps who visit SLP and continue to do campus visits with your student.

Reps are in all fall and spring to meet with studentsCollege Fair November 8th at SLPHS

Encourage your child to set a meeting with their counselor. Senior meetings are a good time to get help, regardless of where the student is at in the process (parents can join as well, just let us know you would like to come!)

What does SLP provide to Seniors?- We provide individual guidance and support to students through Senior Meetings and requested meetings as needed for students- We can provide Senior Timeline/Checklist as well as reminders of upcoming events and deadlines seniors need to know about- We provide feedback on essays and help with applications and letters of recommendations- We are the liaison with colleges/universities to provide exposure and education for our students and families to individual institutions
