How much aid does Spock need?
How much does he need?
School calculates a Cost of Attendance by adding up all of the following:
Tuition and Fees
Room and Board
Transportation
Books and Supplies
Miscellaneous Living Expenses
The FAFSA calculates an Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
20
How much does Spock need?
COA EFC = Financial Need
Financial need is used to determine what types of aid you qualify for
21
How will Spock know?
The school will send an award letter
Many times this is online, or through email
The award letter will explain what types of aid are available
Spock will need to let the school know what aid he accepts

23
Some illogical beliefs about college
If you eliminate the impossible anything that remains, however unlikely, must be the truth Lt. Cmdr Spock
24
Myth: No one in my family has gone to college, there is no way I can
You have 40 50 years of work in front of you
More education will just give you more options in the long run
Many of todays jobs that only require a high school diploma will change, or be gone
25
Myth: My parents dont have the money, and I cant afford to take out a loan
Federal student loans offer a low interest rate
The average student loan debt on graduating with a Bachelors degree is about $20,000, less than many new cars
There are many programs to help you pay off this debt
A small investment now can mean a big return in the future
26
Myth: Grades from the Spring of my Senior year arent important
Schools can, and will, look at grades for your entire Senior year, even if they admit you before you graduate
These grades will be used to qualify for some financial aid, so dont slack!
27
Myth: You have to be very poor or very smart to qualify for financial aid
Over 70% of students nation wide receive some kind of financial aid
The government expects to spend $129 billion dollars on financial aid in 2010-2011
You can qualify
28
Myth: I can wait until Im accepted into college before worrying about scholarships and grants
You can always qualify for some programs
Pell grants
Student loans
Many of the grant programs have limited funds
If you snooze, you lose and dont get any of that money
Scholarships often have deadlines before school starts
Apply early and apply for lots of different types of aid.
29
Myth: My parents are undocumented, so I cant qualify for financial aid.
This is not true!
Federal financial aid is based on the students citizenship status
If you were born in the U.S.A., or have documentation of your entry, you can qualify for most financial aid
Your parents simply need to document their income
Talk to the financial aid office if you need help
30
Myth: I am undocumented, so I cannot qualify for financial aid
This is also not true. Undocumented students do not qualify for any Federal or most State financial aid, however there are programs that can help.
In-state tuition discounts (for Utah students)

Institutional aid
Some colleges have funds or access to resources to assist undocumented students. For more information, contact the college you are interested in attending.
Private scholarships
There are thousands of scholarships available, and many do not verify immigration status.
