COLLINGWOOD NEWS 15 th March 2019 It has been a week of scientific discovery, investigation and fun and, most importantly, it has certainly been a special and memorable time at Collingwood this week. I would like to again thank the number of parents, friends and relatives who have come into school to share their interests, expertise and career paths with many of the children. We always look for ways to inspire the children and encourage them to be curious and you have helped us in that aim. There has been a whole range of activities going on over the week, so look at the photos on the newsletter and my Twitter feed @LHardieCSHead for updates. One of the highlights was surely the morning of forensic science, in which there was a buzz of collaborative thinking and mystery solving. Wednesday also saw the annual house football competition take place. It may have been cold and windy, but the boys and girls who competed played with determination and commitment to their house. Congratulations to Drake for being the final victors. Today, it has been Red Nose Day at Collingwood and, as part of the charity support, we have had an excellent assembly from 5A, who have been responsible for today's organisation as part of their Collingwood Way award. As well as entertaining us with song and dance, they told us about the important causes across the world that Comic Relief supports. The afternoon was another example of our school's unity as the whole school came together to take part in a number of fun activities for this special day. Look out for the video that I will send out soon! Finally, we have one other special Collingwood event coming up this evening as we are all looking forward to the school gala. Our pupils from Years 1 to 6 are all very excited about competing for their houses and showing how they have improved in their swimming. I hope to see many of you there later. COLLINGWOOD NEWS 15th

March 2019

It has been a week of scientific discovery,

investigation and fun and, most importantly, it

has certainly been a special and memorable

time at Collingwood this week. I would like to

again thank the number of parents, friends and

relatives who have come into school to share

their interests, expertise and career paths with

many of the children. We always look for ways

to inspire the children and encourage them to

be curious and you have helped us in that aim.

There has been a whole range of activities

going on over the week, so look at the photos

on the newsletter and my Twitter

feed @LHardieCSHead for updates. One of the

highlights was surely the morning of forensic

science, in which there was a buzz of

collaborative thinking and mystery solving.

Wednesday also saw the annual house football

competition take place. It may have been cold

and windy, but the boys and girls who

competed played with determination and

commitment to their house. Congratulations to

Drake for being the final victors.

Today, it has been Red Nose Day at

Collingwood and, as part of the charity support,

we have had an excellent assembly from 5A,

who have been responsible for today's

organisation as part of their Collingwood Way

award. As well as entertaining us with song and

dance, they told us about the important causes

across the world that Comic Relief supports.

The afternoon was another example of our

school's unity as the whole school came

together to take part in a number of fun

activities for this special day. Look out for the

video that I will send out soon!

Finally, we have one other special Collingwood

event coming up this evening as we are all

looking forward to the school gala. Our pupils

from Years 1 to 6 are all very excited about

competing for their houses and showing how

they have improved in their swimming. I hope

to see many of you there later.

As we have had a week of scientific discovery and fun, here is a

statement from George Bernard Shaw.

Can you think of any problems

that have been 'solved' or

helped by science?

What is the difference between

an invention and a discovery?

Can we think of an example

when we have solved one

problem and then created a

new on? Does this mean we

should stop trying?

We are excited to announce a new after school club coming to

Collingwood soon. STEMKids is based on the idea of educating

children in four specific disciplines — science, technology,

engineering and mathematics. Rather than teaching the four

disciplines as separate subjects, STEM integrates them into one

learning model based on real-world applications.

Projects include balloon powered cars, vibrating bugs, electronic

pocket torches, helicopters and slime (all projects can be taken

home).

Full details of sign up and dates to follow.

We will be running an Easter Holiday Activity

week during the week commencing 1st April

where children will take part in a wide variety of

fun things including sports, craft and art and

various team games as well as lots of other fun

activities. Due to essential electrical works

taking place at Collingwood, the club will be held

at Old Walcountians Sports Club in

Woodmansterne, where our KS2 games lessons

take place. The scheme will run from 8am to

5pm. If you are interested, please complete the

sign-up process on our ParentPay site.
