Introduction Design Summary• The ATmega328 microcontroller process and controls the
collision data.• The MMA7361 3-axis accelerometer provides acceleration
data which is compared to a threshold value in determining a collision.
• Upon collision detection the device goes into a transmit receive mode and through an Xbee transceiver wirelessly sends VIN’s and crash data.
• All vehicles involved in the crash store the crash data and VIN’s on an SD card that can be read at a later time.
• The data can also be read through an on-device LCD for an immediate read in a hit and run situation.
• The crash data consists of the time and date at which the threshold was reached and the magnitude in the 3 orthogonal directions.

As a cooperative approach, car manufacturers have long been a proponent of vehicular communications in order to provide a more effective way of avoiding accidents. However, these types of communications can fail a high percentage of the time—and they also do not provide as a weapon against immobile, parked cars. An alternative, however, that will give vehicle owners peace of mind is a wireless system that can transmit data upon collision with a parked vehicle. This data, or the fingerprint of the automotive realm—the Vehicle Identification Number—will be stored in the transmitters of only the vehicles involved in the collision and will be able to provide law enforcement, insurance companies, and vehicle owners details of accidents.
