“It’s going pretty good. I’m very fortunate to be 54 years old andstill playing the sport I love for a living,” he says. “The ChampionsTour has been absolutely fantastic for me. I’m having a great timeplaying against all these legend golfers, guys I grew up watching andgot to play a lot with on tour. To have a 20-year career on the PGATour, then keep playing golf for a living after 50 is something prettyspecial.”

The senior circuit’s schedule is a factor. McCarron is still ayoung whipper-snapper on the Champions Tour, which also helps.Financial security, thanks to his play thus far on the ChampionsTour, is a massive plus. The kids are gone, which frees up time andschedules.

But it’s the laid-back nature of the tour McCarron likes most. It’shelped to fuel his career and make life easier in general.

“I think the big difference is, the PGA Tour was a little morecutthroat,” McCarron says. “You know, you’re teeing it up everyweek with 156 guys, new guys are coming in every year and they’retrying to take your job. You’re playing for your livelihood, you’re

playing for your career, your mortgage, getting kids throughcollege, all that.”

Once you get to the Champions Tour, he continues, “Most ofthe time all the kids are gone out of the house. I’m playing against 78guys each week, we’re playing three rounds with no cut so it’s a littlebit different. It’s a little more laid back, a little more relaxed in thataspect.”

On the PGA Tour, he says, “You always knew you were goinginto a tournament, but you never knew if you were going to missthe cut or when you were going out. On the Champions Tour, it’smore of a set schedule. I know when I get to come in and I knowwhen I get to go out,” he adds.

McCarron was always competitive on both tours, nabbing 19worldwide wins since turning pro out of UCLA in 1992. Likemany regular tour players crossing over into the senior division,McCarron felt he had the potential to make hay early on.

And he did. McCarron has 11 wins over the first three-and-a-half years of his Champions Tour career. He says the financial

“On the PGA TourChampions, I feel likeif I play well I canplay anywhere.”

benefits have helped him remain relaxed and put him in position totake his senior career to the next level. He has beefed up hisworkouts and modified his practice regimen in an effort to achieveeven loftier goals.

“I’ve had a good enough career already on the Champions Tourthat I’ve made enough money and had enough wins to be set for aslong as I want to keep playing out here, which is really nice. On thePGA Tour, you never knew, year in and year out,” McCarron says.“You were always trying to keep your tour card, and whenever you

had some ‘free seasons’ where you knew you were going to keepyour card, it was because you’d won a couple of times and gottensome exemptions.”

On the Champions Tour, however, McCarron knows he’s goodto go. “I can play year in and year out no matter how I play, and thattakes a little bit of that edge off. Now I’m trying to win Schwab Cupsand majors and just trying to be the best I can be out there.”

McCarron currently resides in Mooresville, North Carolina, about 20 minutes outside Charlotte, near Lake Norman. He livedin La Quinta for eight years before moving back east, and says themove was predicated by his desire to have more recreationaloptions once golf rounds and practice time were over.

McCarron’s girls, Courtney, 24, and Cassidy, 22, are grown andgone; he’s remarried to wife Jenny, with the two exchanging vowsat the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf event in Ridgedale, Mo.They both love to travel (he’s a licensed pilot) and she’s now aregular on tour with him.

If she’s been a good luck charm for him during his senior career,he’ll want that luck to continue as he barrels toward a potential2019 Schwab Cup title. Some of the events left on the schedule areamong his favorite on tour. But these days, things are going so wellthat where McCarron tees up from week to week is almostirrelevant.

“I’d say on the PGA Tour I felt like I had a good chance everytime I went to certain places,” he says. “On the PGA TourChampions, I feel like if I play well I can play anywhere.”

Although the BNP Paribas Open has been votedTournament of the Year by the ATP and WTA Tours forfive consecutive years (2014-2018), it refuses to rest on its

laurels. In fact, it’s always looking for ways to continue to enhancepatrons’ overall experiences and, in turn, shatter attendancerecords—475,372 fans attended in 2019, an all-time record.

In preparation for the 2020 BNP Paribas Open, Indian WellsTennis Garden (IWTG) understands that thrilling tennis actionfeaturing the world’s greatest, most renowned players on bothcircuits is the key component that attracts a record number of fansfrom around the world. However, IWTG’s overall atmosphere isjust as important, as it leads patrons to view the event as an annualtradition.

“As we look ahead to the 2020 BNP Paribas Open, we’llcontinue to prioritize ways that our fans can enjoy every aspect ofour event,” says Phillippe Dore, marketing director, BNP ParibasOpen.

First, IWTG has launched a new marketing campaign,Welcome to Tennis Paradise, following suit with 2018’s highly

successful Tennis Paradise campaign. Showcasing the pristinebeauty of IWTG and its surroundings, from the lush landscape andvirtually endless array of f lowers and palm trees to the snowcappedmountains that serve as a remarkable backdrop, the campaign willelevate the venue’s gorgeous physical aspects.

Additionally the campaign is emphasizing, through variouselements, that IWTG’s Tennis Paradise is a state of mind, a lifestylethat’s recognized throughout the Palm Springs community. Inparticular, it’s celebrating the venue’s restaurants and food vendorsvia the campaign’s Welcome to Delicious element, serenitythrough the Welcome to Delightful element, and outstanding on-court action via the Welcome to Excitement element.

“We’re thrilled to offer patrons a wide variety of exceptionaldining options across the venue, ranging from world famous Nobuand Wolfgang Puck’s Spago to local favorites such as Cassell’s, B.S.Taqueria and Piero’s,” Dore says. “We’ve got everything from sit-down meals prepared by award-winning chefs to snacks on-the-go.”

He adds, “As evidenced by last year’s new beverage partneradditions of Kim Crawford and Corona Premier, the BNP ParibasOpen is committed to continually improving the onsite diningexperience. And we’re in the process of evaluating new additions toour incredible dining lineup for 2020, which will be announced ata later date.”

Aside from its diversity in dining options, IWTG also providesguests various opportunities to enjoy Tennis Paradise firsthand. Some choose to relax by the venue’s f loral installations andfountains with a beverage. Others view live streams of the action ontheir phones via IWTG’s free Wi-Fi as they soak in the venue’spanoramic views.

In addition, patrons can watch the matches on one of Stadium1’s eight 9’ x 5’ video screens, or witness everything live—from oneof Stadium 1’s 16,100 seats and 44 luxurious suites or from one ofStadium 2’s 8,000 seats.

“The Tennis Paradise thematic truly embodies everything thatmakes the BNP Paribas Open an unmistakably unique event,”Dore says. “From Indian Wells Tennis Garden’s atmosphere to the

spectacular tennis action, the BNP Paribas Open is second to none.” To market the new campaign’s Welcome to Excitement

element, IWTG is also featuring a variety of player-focusedelements such as “Welcome to Roger” and “Welcome to Naomi,”which commemorate the wide array of stars that annuallycompete in the BNP Paribas Open.

And as is always the case, expect the unexpected at the 2020BNP Paribas Open, as up-and-comers like 2019 championsDominic Thiem and Bianca Andreescu compete against pastcelebrated champions such as Roger Federer, Serena Williams,Juan Martín del Potro and Naomi Osaka.

“Between one of the most picturesque locations in all of sports, the blissful ambiance and the star-studded field, there’s simplynothing like being in the desert in March,” Dore says. “We can’t waitto welcome fans to the 2020 BNP Paribas Open.”

Cori “Coco” Gauff Stuns Wimbledon Fans. Prior to becoming the youngest player in history to qualify for

Wimbledon’s main draw, where she ultimately reached the fourthround defeating one of her idols, Venus Williams, in the process,Coco Gauff was already on her way to becoming a householdname.

A former world No. 1 junior, she won a junior Grand Slamsingles title and finished runner-up in the 2017 U.S. Open girls’singles event—the youngest finalist in that tournament’s history.Inspired to play tennis after watching Serena Williams capture the2009 Australian Open, Gauff has shown vast potential over theyears, potential that would be fully realized during the 2019Wimbledon Championships. Gauff’s popularity seemed to risewith each of her victories. Her four matches were the most-watched on ESPN during those days.

“I won’t step on the court unless I think I can win,” Gauff says. She’s the youngest woman to win a Wimbledon match sinceJennifer Capriotti in 1991. “My tennis dream is to be the greatest ofall time. Anything is possible at any age.”

Nadal Wins His Record 12th French Open. For the second straight year, Rafael Nadal dueled Dominic

Thiem in the finals of the French Open men’s singleschampionship. And, just like 2018, the same result was recorded—yet another victory for Nadal. This time, however, history wasmade as Nadal broke the record for the most singles titles won by aplayer at the same Grand Slam tournament. Prior to June 9, he hadshared the record with Margaret Court, who won the AustralianOpen 11 times.

Nadal ultimately won the 3-hour, 1-minute match 6-3, 5-7, 6-1and 6-1. In all, 46 points went 10 strokes or more as eachcompetitor claimed half of them. As a result of the remarkableachievement, Nadal has now won three consecutive French Opensand is only two Grand Slam victories away from tying RogerFederer’s all-time record of 20. In addition, his career record atRoland Garros is now 93-2—a statistic that may never besurpassed.

“I can’t explain my emotions,” Nadal said after the match.“Congrats to Dominic. He deserves [a win] here, too. He has anunbelievable intensity.”

There’s no doubt about it. The summer 2019 tennis season was one for the ages. From up-and-coming stars making their presence known on the global stage to longstandingchampions making history (yet again), this was one of the most memorable summers inrecent memory. Some might call it one of the greatest summers in tennis history.

Here are the moments that made summer 2019 so special.

This summer, Cori “Coco” Gauff entered the All England LawnTennis and Croquet Club as a virtual unknown, a 15-year-old withall the potential in the world yet not much recognition for it, asidefrom the most ardent tennis fans.

That all changed by the time she left the 2019 WimbledonChampionships. After becoming the youngest woman to win aWimbledon match in 28 years, eventually reaching the fourthround, she was no longer just a prodigy. She was a household name,a superstar in the making that became popular faster than nearlyany other star in the making. Her four matches were the most-watched on ESPN during the days they were played.

So when Gauff prepared to compete against World No. 1Naomi Osaka during the third round of the U.S. Open, more than23,000 fans knew they were about to witness history in-person.They just weren’t aware how yet.

The match wasn’t quite what most had expected. In a little overan hour, Osaka won 6-3, 6-0 to continue her title defense andpursue her third Grand Slam singles title, and second of the year asshe had already won the Australian Open. Although the matchwasn’t as exciting or memorable as everyone had hoped, themoments that followed may very well be remembered for years tocome. In fact, they may have changed the future of the sport.

After coming up short in her quest to qualify for the fourthround of yet another major, Gauff, the youngest player to advanceto the U.S. Open’s third round in 23 years, became quite emotional.Unable to hide the tears, she was quickly embraced by Osaka, whoseemed to sense that she needed to be comforted. And then to theshock of the crowd, Osaka asked Gauff to join her during the post-

match on-court interview with ESPN’s Mary Joe Fernandez. At first reluctant to join Osaka for the interview, Gauff

eventually relented as she was told it would be much better to crywith her than by herself in the locker room. Before long, bothplayers were in tears as they spoke to Fernandez, each other andcertain members of the crowd.

“She did amazing, and I’m going to learn a lot from this match,”Gauff said. “She’s been so sweet to me, so thank you for this. Thankyou, Naomi.”

Osaka then turned toward Gauff’s parents and spoke directly tothem.

“You guys raised an amazing player. I remember I used to seeyou guys—I don’t want to cry—I remember I used to see you guystraining in the same place as us,” said Osaka, who, like Gauff, lives inFlorida. “And for me, the fact that both of us made it and we’re bothstill working as hard as we can, I think it’s incredible. And I thinkyou guys are amazing. I think, Coco, you’re amazing.”

The hugs, the tears, the honesty, the vulnerability—it all caughtthe tennis world by surprise. It led to immediate praise from thegame’s former and current greats, and stirred a sense of optimismand hope for the future of the game that simply can’t be explained.Gauff summed it up best during her news conference afterward.

“She really showed sportsmanship tonight. I’m glad I was able toexperience that moment. She proved she’s a true athlete—someone who on the court treats you like [her] worst enemy butoff the court can be your best friend.”

The Balkans Shine at Wimbledon. After completing one of the most memorable, if not the most

memorable, singles finals in Wimbledon history, Novak Djokovicwon his second straight Wimbledon Championships, defeatingRoger Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6 and 13-12. Lasting four hours and 57minutes, the singles final was the longest in Wimbledon history.

Djokovic has now won 16 Grand Slam singles titles, whileFederer remains a 20-time Grand Slam singles title champion, eightof which are Wimbledon victories. In addition to the hope ofextending his record of Grand Slam singles victories, Federer wasalso striving to become the oldest man in the Open era (37 yearsand 340 days old) to win a Grand Slam singles title.

“I hope I give some other people a chance to believe at 37 it’s notover yet. I had my chances, [but] Novak was great,” Federer says.

Djokovic, whose record at Wimbledon is now 72-10 (Federerhas won 101 matches at Wimbledon), says, “I never stopped

believing, even though I was very close to losing—two matchpoints down. But I managed to find my best tennis when itmattered most.”

At the same time, Simona Halep became the first Romanianwoman to win a singles final championship in Wimbledon history, leading to yet another record: For the first time in Wimbledonhistory, two Balkans won the championship the same week. Bydefeating Serena Williams, who was striving to win an all-timerecord 24th Grand Slam singles title, 6-2, 6-2 in 56 minutes, Halepproved that nothing is impossible.

“We don’t have a grass court in Romania, [so] I never thought [Icould] win on grass with all these players that are very tall andserving with a lot of power,” Halep says. “That was the match of mylife.”

The win at Flushing Meadows was the shot heard ‘round theworld, so to speak. Nineteen-year old Bianca Andreescu isthe tennis star who defeated Serena Williams in the nail-

biting U.S. Open finals match on September 7, in a rollercoaster 6-3,7-5 win, and the first Canadian player to win a grand slam title at thetournament. Let’s say that again: Andreescu is the first Canadianever, male or female, to win the Grand Slam trophy at the U.S. Openin her main-draw tournament debut in the Open era, which startedin 1968 when professionals were allowed into grand slamtournaments. She has only participated in four majors in her briefcareer.

She’s also the first player born in the 2000s to win a major andthe youngest grand slam winner since Maria Sharapova at the2006 U.S. Open. Andreescu’s match-up against Williams, 37,

represented the largest age gap in a grand slam final, and it camealmost exactly 20 years to the day since Williams won the U.S.Open for her first major title in 1999, a year before Andreescuwas born.

The tennis phenom has even earned her own slogan, often witha hashtag in front of it: “She the North,” a riff on the TorontoRaptors’ “We the North” from earlier this year following their NBAchampionship win.

Her youthful accomplishment is noteworthy on its own, butwhat’s really catapulted spectators up out of their box seats is thatshe has handed Williams her fourth consecutive defeat in the finalof a major to again deny Williams a 24th grand slam title. That’shistory-making and jaw-dropping, especially since such a title for

Williams would have tied her with Margaret Court, the only playerin history with 24 grand slam singles titles.

Despite withdrawing from Wimbledon earlier this year due toa shoulder injury, Andreescu recovered and dominatedthroughout the U.S. Open. She’s currently ranked No. 15 andmanaged to take down Katie Volynets, Kirsten Flipkens andCaroline Wozniacki throughout the tournament.

So, who is Bianca Andreescu? She lives in Toronto, hernickname is Bibi and she speaks Romanian f luently. She was born inMississauga, Ontario, Canada, to Romanian parents who moved toCanada in 1994. She started playing tennis at age 7 when her familymoved back to her parents’ native Romania. When she was 11years old, she joined Tennis Canada’s National Training Program inToronto, after her family moved back to Canada.

Her tennis career can be traced to 2014, when she won theprestigious Les Petits As. Andreescu began the 2015 season bywinning both the singles and doubles titles at the Grade-2tournament in La Paz. She also began working with former WorldNo. 3 Nathalie Tauziat, who previously coached Canadian EugenieBouchard. Andreescu was named the 2015 Outstanding JuniorFemale by Tennis Canada. At the 2016 Rogers Cup, she wasencouraged by player Simona Halep to turn professional.

In 2017, she advanced to the semifinals at the junior event of theAustralian Open and won the doubles title with Carson Branstine. At the Citi Open in August that year, she defeated Camila Giorgi inthe opening round, her first win on the WTA Tour. In her nextmatch, she upset World No. 13 Kristina Mladenovic, becoming the

first player born in the 2000s to beat a Top20 player.

In 2018, she continued with a steadyperformance; however, a back injury

forced her out of tournaments untilNovember. As we now know, her breakoutyear proved to be 2019. She won her firstWTA 125K title at Newport Beach in

January, bumping her to a career-highranking of No. 68 and passing EugenieBouchard to become Canada’s top-rankedplayer.

Andreescu had a breakout tournamentat the Indian Wells Premier Mandatoryevent, part of the 2019 BNP Paribas Open, where she won her first WTA tour title, vaulting her to No. 24. She took to thecourt for the second Grand Slam of theyear at the French Open, playing as the22nd seed.

Many observers assess her play ascreative and powerful. She’s beenpracticing meditation since she was 12years old, believing it helps her mentaldiscipline on the court.

Whatever she’s doing for motivation, it’sbrought her to that sweet moment whenshe was able to accept the champion’scheck for $3.85 million. We would say,“Remember her name,” but that’s hardlynecessary. We’re sure we’ll be hearing a lotabout Bianca Andreescu from here on out,as she pumps her fists all the way to thebank and into sports history._______________________________

Now 87 years old, Dante is as active as ever, having recently takena trip to Italy to visit the land of his roots. As an up-and-comingbaseball star back in the golden era of the 1950s, his life was a busyone. He’s yet to slow down.

It all started for Dante in 1950 in Stamford, Connecticut. Asshortstop for the Stamford High School team, he was MVP of theNew England Newspaper League, which Stamford won. The BostonBraves signed him to a $6,000 contract right out of high school.Dante immediately rewarded his parents.

“They couldn’t sign me alone because I was underage. So they hadto sign me in the presence of my parents at home in Stamford,” Dantesaid.  “So, I signed for $6,000, which was, back then, the equivalent ofbeing a first-round draft pick. And the first thing I did was buy myparents a new car—a four-door Buick with white walls and a radio. Itwas $2,400 with all the options.”

Early in his career, Dante began to feel discomfort in his rightarm, a condition that worsened without treatment. After having

successful surgery on the arm, doctors suggested Danterehabilitate in a warm climate. He chose to attend the University ofMiami in the off-season to work on his drama major as acting washis second love.

In Miami, Dante spent a lot of time with Mickey McDermott, apitcher for the Boston Red Sox. McDermott happened to be goodfriends with immensely popular big-band leader Tommy Dorsey, who was a baseball fanatic and loved hanging out with ballplayers.During a tour of the U.S. Southeast in 1954, Dorsey reached out toMcDermott to arrange a dinner, and Dante was invited to comealong to add his input to the baseball discussion. Dante and Dorseystayed in contact, and during another dinner the following February,Dorsey told Dante he had “it,” and asked if he’d ever consideredacting or taking a screen test. Intrigued, Dante consented.

As Dante describes it, he said to Dorsey “You really think I have it,Tom?’ Dorsey replied, “You have all the qualities and prerequisites, the rest is up to you. I was under contract with MGM for severalyears. I could easily arrange a screen test for you and we’ll see whathappens. After that, you’re the boss.”

Soon after, Dante went to spring training but his arm wasn’t quiteready. “Meanwhile, Tom was calling every couple of days asking for aprogress report. I took a two-week leave of absence and joined him inVegas for a few days. He told me he was heading to LA for a couple ofweeks and would arrange a screen test while there. So, I met up withTommy when he was in LA and tested out at MGM. MGM signedme to a contract and I never went back to baseball.”

Tall, dark, and handsome, Dante quickly found himself doingSomebody Up There Likes Me with Paul Newman. Within six yearsof his first screen test, he was in the Southern California town ofIdyllwild filming the movie Kid Galahad with Elvis Presley—easilythe biggest male singing and movie star in the country at the time.

“We become fast friends in the story, and I get him to sing withall the other fighters and myself, I’m the champ of the camp,” Dantesays. “He sings in every movie he’s made and we get him to sing andwe had a ball. The name of the song was “This is Living.” It was a funtime and Elvis couldn’t have been nicer. He was very well-mannered—‘Yes sir, no sir, no ma’am.’ He was always on time, always knew his dialogue and he was a good athlete. Between shotswe’d throw the football. He loved football. It was a joy, we had agreat time and it was all filmed in Idyllwild.”

Dante continued to perfect his craft and his roles improvedaccordingly. One of his favorite films, and perhaps his bestindividual performance, was his lead role in Winterhawk. The

150 television programs in which he appeared include Days ofour Lives, Death Valley Days, Daniel Boone, The Big Valley,General Hospital, Get Smart, Knots Landing, Perry Mason, TheSix Million Dollar Man and Simon and Simon. His movieportfolio includes Cruise Missile, The Farmer, Operation Bikini,Willard and the cult classic, The Naked Kiss.

A Rancho Mirage resident for 30 years, Dante has also been activein philanthropic work in the Coachella Valley, including hisnamesake golf tournament, which ran for eight years, and his tennistournament.

“We’ve done a lot of things for this desert that we’re really proudof,” he says. “We love living here. We love to travel, but we always lovecoming home.”

Most recently, Dante has been putting pen to paper. He’s justcompleted his third book, Six Rode Home, documenting the post-Civil War lives of six soldiers.

“What inspired me was it applies to the beginning of war, whensoldiers went out to fight, survived and then they came home. Therewas always a sixth sense about the insecurities, the doubts, the fears, about what to expect when they get home after being gone—in thiscase for four years without any communication, maybe a letter ortwo. And now they’re going home but to what? These are the sameemotions soldiers have gone through since the beginning of time, justthe names and places change.”

Michael Dante could have been one of the best baseball players of his time. But after an arminjury sidetracked his career, he was never able to latch on long term in the big leagues.

Of baseball, that is. Instead, he became a movie star, and later an author.

In addition tothe Anthony Anderson Celebrity GolfClassic, he has supported otherorganizations that help introduce youngpeople to golf, including First Tee.

Hammond Entertainment, known forproducing celebrity golf and charity events, has produced Anderson’s golf classic since itbegan. President and CEO Bill Hammonddescribes this year’s event as a great success.Asked what he considers important aboutthis particular event, Hammond says,“Being able to create an experience for ourguest sponsors and celebrities and to havethem here firsthand to witness the charitiesof Anthony Anderson, to hear therecipients talk about their appreciation andto present them with a check that makes animmediate difference.”

He describes it as inspirational to bepart of something where people fromdifferent cultures and income levels, wealthy to working class, “come togetheras one for a great cause.”

Hammond has nothing but high praisefor Anthony Anderson. “It really isremarkable what Anthony is doing withhis celebrity,” he says. “And let it be knownthat with all his success, he is just a kid fromCompton who’s making a difference with

May 19 and 20 were big days for California children and teens, especially those in South Los Angeles County’s city of Compton, most famous for high rates of crime and the many rappers whogrew up there. It’s also where actor and celebrity AnthonyAnderson was born and where he continues to providecommunity support. The city of Compton has even played a role inmultiple episodes of Black-ish, the TV hit in which Anderson stars.Giving back to the children and families of Compton is a priorityfor the actor, and that’s just what the Anthony Anderson FamilyFoundation does.

In May, the 3rd Annual Anthony Anderson Celebrity GolfClassic raised nearly $500,000 for the star’s charitable foundation, which benefits a host of organizations including Children’sHospital Los Angeles, Boys & Girls Club of America, Compton Jr.Posse Youth Equestrians, Compton Initiative, The Black Academyof Arts & Letters, Children Striving Together, Compassion for TeenLife, Inc. and others. There’s an emphasis on supporting inner-cityorganizations that benefit underprivileged youth.

Of course, Anderson doesn’t do all this alone. Lexus signed on asthe presenting sponsor, and other sponsors included YES, Diageo,Novo, Brand Jordan, Others First, Artists First and Jim Wilkes. Andthen there were the 150 celebrities from the sports andentertainment industries who gathered at exclusive Bighorn GolfClub in Palm Desert to take on the Canyon Course and raisemoney in the process.

In attendance were George Lopez, Smokey Robinson, rapperSchoolboy Q, Ozzie Smith, NBA All-Star Chris Paul, NBA Hall of

Famer James Worthy, NBA coach Doc Rivers, former MLB starDave Winfield, pro golfer Lee Elder and many others.

The two-day event started off on Sunday evening, May 19 witha VIP reception and pairings party held at Canyons SteakHouse atBighorn Golf Club. It was followed by a private VIP Celebrity CigarLounge event hosted by Anderson and friends.

The next day it was all about golf, but fun, laughter and, mostimportant, significant charitable giving to Anderson’s foundation, were all part of the event, which lived up to its mission of providingsupport for causes important to the actor.

Anderson pledged support for Children’s Hospital LA when heserved as an interim host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in early May. Thehospital is where Kimmel’s son was treated for a rare heart defect.

Another organization that received money from the 2019Celebrity Golf Classic was Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum, which provides free f lying lessons to underprivileged youth anduses Compton-Woodley Airport as its home base. Since it wasestablished by pilot Robin Petgrave in 1998, Tomorrow’sAeronautical Museum has utilized aviation to engage at-risk youthas an alternative to the negative inf luences in their environment.Along the way, eight of the young people trained have brokenaviation f light records. The museum was presented with a $10,000check at the event this year.

Los Angeles Mission, which supports more than 400 homelessindividuals, also received support from Anderson’s foundation. “Abig reason for this tournament is to help programs in the inner city,to support people in the community who don’t always get the help

at least half of the entire worldwide supply. Scotland has moregenuine links than any other country and, with a number of thesebeing world class, Scotland is able to provide an unusually widechoice for the discerning traveling golfer.

When making a golf trip from the United States of a week orlonger, it’s likely that a golfer or group want to visit more than onedestination. Fortunately, there are several areas in Scotland offeringat least three top-class links courses in close proximity to oneanother, ideal for multi-day stays.

On the west coast, Ayrshire is home to Turnberry, Troon andPrestwick. Turning to the east coast, you’ll find Muirfield, NorthBerwick and two or three other courses in a supporting role. In thenortheast corner of Scotland, one’s choices move to Castle Stuart,Dornoch and maybe Brora, which provides an ancient and raw feelto the links experience.

But perhaps the most recognizable grouping is in the kingdomof Fife, and in particular, the St Andrews area. Here we find TheOld Course, likely the most famous golf course in the world andcommonly known as “The Home of Golf.” Its adjoining neighbor,The New Course, is also a good quality links. Just down the roadwe find Kingsbarns Links, and the ‘new boy on the block,’Dumbarnie Links, which is only 20 minutes from St Andrews andscheduled to open in May 2020. Many people in the golf industrywho have enjoyed a tour are already predicting that Dumbarnie

Links has a very bright future and will join the above-mentionedlinks to be included on every golfer’s bucket list of must-playcourses.

With the U.S. dollar continuing to be very strong against thePound Sterling, Scotland is not only a great choice but alsoexcellent value.

Links, developed inScotland, were the waygolf started. Linkscourses are the traditionof the game.

PlayWorthy

Are you already thinking of planning your golf vacation fornext summer? There is much choice to be had and manyfine golf resorts/venues scattered around the world. One

of the most popular, though, is Scotland. Why? Because Scotlandhas more links golf courses than any other country in the world.

You may ask, what is a ‘links course’ and why is it so special?Links, developed in Scotland, were the way golf started. Linkscourses are the tradition of the game. By definition, a genuine linkscourse is a band of land close by the sea. Its topography is typicallycharacterized by dunes and a sandy soil unsuitable for arablefarming but which readily supports various indigenous bent andfescue grasses.

Because this land could not support crops, it basically becamewasteland destined to be used by farmers for grazing cattle andsheep. In fact, the sheep were the “architects” of many of the earlybunkers! They dug into the sandy dunes and created small, depressed sandy areas that afforded them shelter from theprevailing winds and inclement weather. This is the land out ofwhich the old, great links courses were eventually created.

So, where does the name links originate? It is thought that itevolved from the fact that this links wasteland sat between the seaand the local towns—a link, as it were, connecting the sea/sand andtown. Fishermen used to cross this thin band of land and, it’sthought, to make their walk more interesting, they would hit

pebbles over the ground with a stick. Hence, a very crude versionof the game of golf was born.

Most of these original old links remain intact. They were largelybuilt through sand dunes and tended to follow the naturalcontours of the land. Any dirt-moving could only be attained bymen using shovels combined with the use of horses and carts.

Today the scene is very different. There is the opportunity toinvolve, where necessary, heavy machinery, from large bulldozersand smaller ‘dozers, which are used by the shapers, to massiveexcavators and 50-ton dumper trucks. So, does one always have touse a large amount of machinery to create a modern links? Theanswer is yes and no. It depends on the topography of the site onwhich the architect is working.

Ideally, a large site with natural sand dunes is a terrific start. Thebiggest problem is that most of this type of land is heavily protectedthese days by environmentalist agencies and local heritagesocieties. Obtaining a permit to create a golf course can beextremely difficult and often impossible. The alternative is to use af lattish, sandy piece of land by the sea. The architect then craftsnew dunes such that, after they grow-in, they will look like they’vebeen there for over 100 years.

There are little more than 40 world-class links in the entireworld. Links are rare and their importance cannot be overstated. They are sustainable and ecologically friendly. Scotland is home to

It seems safe to say that in 2019, mosteveryone on the planet who’s ever filed forcredit—or turned on a television—knowsAmerican Express, which is the biggestreason officials of the desert’s PGA Tourstop couldn’t be more thrilled with thetournament’s new title sponsor.

“American Express is the perfectmatch for the desert community and thebest possible title sponsor we could askfor,” says Jeff Sanders, executive director ofthe tournament, now named TheAmerican Express. “The demographic inthe desert matches perfectly with theAmerican Express global brand, and theAmerican Express event in the desert is aglobal event.”

The 2020 American Express—formerly the Desert Classic, formerly the

CareerBuilder Challenge, formerly theHumana Challenge, formerly the BobHope Chrysler Classic—will beconducted January 16-19 at the three LaQuinta courses used in the 2019 rotation:PGA West’s Stadium and Nicklauscourses and La Quinta Country Club. The New York City-based financialservices giant, a member of the DowJones Industrial Average, has signed amultiyear contract to serve as thetournament’s title sponsor. By far, it’s thebiggest sponsor to step in behind thetournament since the heyday of theChrysler sponsorship in terms of clout, recognizability and worldwide reach.

For its part, American Express will havethe opportunity to connect itself to one ofthe PGA Tour’s longest running events, and entrench itself further into the worldof professional golf. There’s also the bonusof participation in the tournament’s pro-am event in the Southern California desertin all its in-season glory, while things are

typically pretty grim weather-wise in theBig Apple in late January.

“American Express is going to utilizethe unique three-day pro-am format whereits customers play with six PGA Tour prosover three days. That’s the kind ofexperience their customers are going toreceive, and that’s what American Expresswants to get out of the event,” Sanders says.“As title sponsor, the American Expressbrand will be seen around the world andcoast-to-coast in the United States.Branding is important, especially whenyou co-brand with the PGA Tour. It’s one ofthe most honored brands in the world, as isAmerican Express. So again, it’s a perfectmatch.”

Golfinstruction

Setup Creates Swing PathMaking sure that my hands match the clubface through my gripprovides the right alignment to create my swing path. I often seegolfers open up their stance too wide, which causes the swingpath to be too much “out-to-in.” Instead, I want the feeling ofsquaring up to my target line, like I’m standing on a railroad trackto the target in the distance.

Swing Path Creates Ball FlightThe swing path is key to an effective wedge game. On thetakeaway, it should be slightly outside. You can see in the photothat in my takeaway the clubface is slightly outside the hands. This move is created by keeping very quiet hands and using mybody rotation to move the club away from the ball. My takeawaybeing slightly outside keeps the space to the inside open for thetransition from backswing to forward swing.

My transition from backswing toforward swing occurs around waisthigh, where I allow the weight of theclub to cock my wrist. This transitionrequires the wrist to be very supple inorder to feel the weight of the club “set”the wrist for the forward swing. In thetransition, I want the angle of the clubshaft pointing directly to the golf ball inorder to establish my swing path for theforward swing through impact.

My forward swing is all about feeling theappropriate speed in the rotation of mybody, very similar to throwing a ball. Asmy body rotates left through impact, it’sthe hinge in my wrist that helps mecontrol the compression with the golfball and thus control the ball’s f lightthrough the air. I have to make sure Irotate all the way into a complete finishwith my chest facing the target and myright wrist remaining hinged.

34 DesertGolf&tennis • octobernovember2019

Many handicap golfers are in pursuit of hitting their tee shots longer, thinking that will make thedifference in lowering their scores and handicaps. My belief, however, is that better wedge play will lead to

shorter putts, which will in turn lower your scores. Here are my keys to dialing in your wedge game.

Starts with the GripGreat wedge play starts with the grip. I have what many would refer to as a “square grip.” I like to have my thumbs on top, matching theleading edge of the clubface. In this position my hands match the angle of the clubface so I can better control the leading edge throughimpact. As I take hold of the club, I also want to be sure that my right hand has the club resting more in the fingers, which increases the feeland control of the clubface. As I slide the two hands together, it’s almost like they’re melting together, that they’re “one hand.” This handplacement allows me to “feel” the ball on the clubface, as if literally throwing the ball to the target.

Many yoga practitioners that comethrough the doors of the Bikram Yoga Plusstudios in the Coachella Valley are golf andtennis players who practice yoga to keeptheir bodies in balance. Golf and tennis aresports that favor the exertion of one side ofthe body over the other. After 18 holes ofgolf or a game of tennis, you might feel adifference in your swing side or servingside. The repetition of use on yourdominant side can cause an imbalance off lexibility and strength in the arms, shoulders and hips, which can lead to painin these or other parts of the body. Thesetwo sports also require twisting of thespine when swinging the club or racket, which can cause lower back pain due tomisalignment. A regular yoga practice canhelp to offset the imbalance in our bodiescaused by day-to-day activities and sportspractices.

Yoga can be a particularly usefulsupplemental activity for avid golf andtennis players. The balance, f lexibility andmental clarity that yoga offers are sure toimprove your game. Now with a secondBikram Yoga Plus studio located in PalmSprings, more over 10 classes per day as

well as state-of-the-art locker rooms andshowers at each location, you have plentyof reason to stop in for a class.

And if the 105 degree heat is not yourstyle, there are plenty of “cooler” yogaclasses, including Yin Yoga, Trapeze Yogaand Vinyasa Flow. There is something foreveryone at Bikram Yoga Plus. You cancheck out the entire schedule atwww.CoachellaYoga.com.

“I’ve always been an enthusiastic tennisplayer, but it was only in the past five yearsthat I started to practice yoga,” says LaurenBench, who practices at Bikram Yoga Plus.“Right away I noticed a change in my bodyand my tennis game. Yoga helped my bodyrecover more quickly and gave mestrength and f lexibility that I had notenjoyed before. Learning to control breathin my yoga practice also helped metremendously in my tennis fitness. I’vediscovered that tennis and yoga are aperfect complement.”

Jack Tapleshay, another Bikram YogaPlus practitioner, finds the same benefits asa golfer.

“Anyone who has ever picked up a golfclub would benefit from taking a yoga

class,” he says “Yoga doesn’t just stretch themuscles, it warms the joints. Yogis practicebreathing to reduce stress and heal thebody. Yoga allows us to relax our beingfrom the inside out. In yoga, we practiceturning the body in the proper way, sowhat golfer would not prefer approachingthe game with a warm, relaxed body and acalm inner self? I believe most golferswould love that combination. Think aboutit the next time you need a four-foot putt towin the hole. Twenty minutes of yoga a dayis as valuable as hitting a bucket of balls.Give it a shot. I guarantee you will love theresults.”

Finding the right golf and tennis community is just as important, or evenmore so, than finding the right home. After all, it’s the lifestyle most areseeking, especially with a second home or vacation home. Price

determines where most people end up; however, there are more than 100private and semi-private golf and tennis clubs in the Coachella Valley tochoose from.

There are communities in every price range and with a variety of condos, homes and amenities to offer. It’s important to work with an experiencedrealtor that knows the area and what each club has to offer—not only thereal estate but also the ins and outs of the clubs.

As a 29-year desert resident and top realtor I’ve had the opportunity tovisit every golf course and tennis community in the valley. I am also an avidgolfer, social tennis and pickle ball player and admitted workoutoverachiever. I pride myself in using these life experiences in matching myclients and friends to the perfect club for their needs.

Here are some important questions to consider when choosing a club. What are your interests and hobbies? How important is golf and tennis?

How much are you willing to spend on golf and tennis? What is your golf ortennis skill level? How many holes of golf do you want? How many tenniscourts? Are you looking for a club that offers other amenities such as a fitnesscenter, spa services, a large pool, pickle ball and family activities? What kindof dining options do you want?

Most important, what type of home are you looking for and what is yourbudget? Real estate in the different clubs exists in every price range fromcondos in the $200s to custom estates in the $1 million-plus range.

To stay competitive in today’s country club market, clubs have had tochange their focus from golf and tennis only to focusing on lifestyle activitiesfor the entire family. Adding such amenities as excellent fitness facilities, spaservices, pools, casual outdoor dining and social activities for children andadults has been a critical factor in attracting younger people to the CoachellaValley.

Once you have answered all of these questions, it’s my job to introduceyou to specific clubs that will match your lifestyle needs and offer the righthome as well. Making these perfect matches makes my job so rewarding.

When you think Lexus, a racetrack and super model are notlikely the first images that comes to mind. That’s becauseyou’ve yet to drive the Lexus LC 500. Take one look, give it

a quick spin and you’ll conjure images of Indy and wonder whereLexus has been keeping this pretty little sister all your life.

The LC 500 is one part power performer and one part pin-upmodel. Under the hood sits a 5.0-liter V8 engine ready to deliver 471horsepower. The 10-speed automatic transmission sets the bar forwhat a sports car should feel like as it races through the gears. Lexustests report a 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds. That’s race car fast andclassy as anything on the road.

The LC 500 has been the Lexus f lagship performance car since2017. In the classic mantra of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the LC 500keeps its finish and components in 2020 but does gain a new look inthe upgraded Inspiration model. The 2019 Inspiration line came inone color: f lare yellow. The 2020 Inspiration is Nori Green Pearl. Thisis the color green you see when you imagine the Irish countryside. It’shard not to love its metallic glitter and its depth. The Inspiration modelgoes just as fast but tricks out the interior with a black-and-tancombination sure to sooth and swaddle.

Lexus has built its brand as a dependable, upscale vehicle. Thatmakes it difficult to imagine squealing tires and racing for pink slips. Afew minutes into a drive in the LC 500, however, you’ll be looking foraction. This car occupies a space in the market with the Porsche 911and Mercedes S Class. Unlike the 911 though, you won’t need a trip tothe chiropractor after your morning commute. You won’t need to towit to the mechanic for bi-weekly maintenance either.

Everything on the interior of the LC 500 has its place and makessense. There aren’t any strangely placed buttons or gimmicky features.Safety features like brake assist and blind-spot monitoring give the cara feel of excellence. The leather feels like a million bucks—even thedoor handles have an air of upscale. This is certainly the top of theLexus line.

From the exterior, the design features accentuate the LC 500’sagility and class. A frontal view makes you feel like you’re about to beattacked by a futuristic predator. The metal grill and long hood posewith strength and hint at agility. The side view subtly dares you tocompare bank accounts. The taillights are almost understated andsporty. Four 21-inch, two-tone wheels give the LC 500 a sense ofanticipation that anything could happen with this machine.

With 471 horses, you won’t be begging for power from this beast. Itgets off the line fast and the handling is everything you’d want from aluxury coupe. It’s not a Boxter, but you aren’t 25 anymore. The refinedfeel of the suspension and low notes of the exhaust bring a sense ofmaturity to the party. Think wine and cheese rather than kegs.

There’s plenty to like about the LC 500 from the optional MarkLevinson Reference Surround Sound audio system to the speed-activated rear wing (also optional). You won’t break your neck and getnose bleeds from the G-forces in the LC but you’ll get plenty of secondlooks around town and have all power you need for almost anysituation. The LC 500 can hold its own against the steepestcompetition and isn’t the kind of car you see at every country club inAmerica.

Only 100 Inspiration series models will be produced for the U.S.market. The LC 500 should retail around $100,000. If you can getyour hands on one, be ready to fall in love.

As a brand, Dolce & Gabbana hasimbued our culture with itsimpossible-to-ignore designs by

partners Stefano Gabbana and DomenicoDolce. Their tendency to occasionally beoutspoken when quoted as well as inadvertising campaigns has probablyboosted their cachet as a fashion house, appealing to women’s independence andfemininity. Since they presented their firstcollection in 1985, the partners haveremained loyal to core themes: Bohemianstyles and animal prints evocative of f lirtylingerie, often inspired by their Sicilianheritage.

Dolce and Gabbana’s muses, by way ofbrand advertisers and celebritycollaborations, have included Madonna,Scarlet Johansson and ChristyTurlington. They have producedcostumes for the international tours ofMissy Elliott, Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige. Some of their collections have been

inspired by sports and movies;however, for the most part theirluxury clothing lines are inspired byhigh design, with an air of formalityand timelessness.

The Dolce & Gabbana fall-winter2019 collection is a showcase of f lorals,

with heavy emphasis on pink, greenand burgundy tones as well as yellow

sunf lowers and red and black contrasts. It’s an understatement to point out thatanyone who wears Dolce & Gabbanathis fall will be noticed in a big way.

The Lily Print Poplin Bustier Topcaptures the brand’s trademarksensibility. Cotton poplin with splashesof pink and white f lowers is enhancedby front laces and a deep round necklinethat highlights the sensuality of thedécolletage. Underwired and boned, the top is fastened with a back zipper

and hook-and-eye fastening and isavailable for $1,245.

The Lily Print Poplin Pants arecropped, wide legged and whimsical, coordinating well with the BustierTop. These high-waist slacks featureslant pockets for a casually elegantlook, and the bright pink, white and

green f loral print pops pleasantlyagainst the rich black poplin background. These pants sell for $945.

Moving into the realm of the romantic, the Cashmere and Silk Cardigan with LaceDetails is pretty in pink, embellished byChantilly lace. Stitched from 18-gaugeknit, the delicate sweater has a round neck, long sleeves and fine-rib trims. It forms the

perfect twin set with the sleevelessCashmere and Silk Sweater with LaceDetails made from the same yarn, measuring 23.6 inches from the collar. Thecardigan retails for $1,845, the matchingshell for $1,145.

Pairing sweetly with the cardigan andsweater set, the Lily-Print Shantung Pantscontinue the f loral lily theme, this time setagainst a creamy pale pink background. The high waist lends sophistication in silkshantung with slant pockets and a frontzipper f ly closure accented with a coveredbutton. The inner leg measures 26.8inches, the center front pleat adding to theemphasis of the crop. These pants retail for$1,395.

About as classic Dolce & Gabbana as itgets, the Short Cady Dress with Leopard-Print Details features a bright red, sleeveless bon-ton sheath in stretch viscosecady. The traditional shape has been givena make-over thanks to the iconic animalprint waistband and front pockets alongwith the metal ball buttons. The dresssports a peter-pan collar and leopard-printstretch silk satin lining, fastening in backwith a zipper and measuring just shy of 20inches from waist to bottom hem. Thisdress may be purchased for $2,145.

The Stretch Satin Bustier Dressinvokes the designers’ love of the slip dress,a motif consistently represented in theircollections year after year. The ultimate“LBD” (little black dress), this sexy numberis made of stretch viscose satin andembellished by laces and golden eyelets. The dress features a sweetheart necklinewith boned bodice and adjustable straps, and it falls 33.5 inches below the waist to amidi length. The dress retails for $4,395.

Colorful and creative, the Sunflower-Print Charmeuse Midi Skirt grazes thehips with a ruff led hem adorned with giantyellow and green sunf lowers against awhite background. Crafted of soft stretchsilk charmeuse, the skirt is high waistedand includes a stretch silk satin lining, hitting at the knee. Paired with theSunflower-Print Cady Bustier Top, theensemble again takes on a silhouettesuggestive of lingerie intended to be wornfor the world to see. The sleeveless bustieris made with molded cups, shoulder straps, crepe de chine lining and a rear zipper insetin black fabric. The skirt may be purchasedfor $1,145 and the bustier for $945. Thematching Nylon Sunflower Tights are alsoavailable for $195.

Reminiscent of the brand’s famousSicilian dress from the 1990s, the Queen-

Print Organza Midi Dress manifests arefined sheerness of silk organza, conjuringan ethereal effect to the baroque paintingsdepicted on the dress bodice and full circleskirt. Constructed with a shirt collar andcrepe de chine slip with lace trim, thesleeveless frock extends 35.4 inches fromthe waist to mid-calf. This f luffy fashion canbe purchased for $3,595.

Ideal for any charity event or board oftrustees meeting, the Portofino-PrintMikado Jacket and coordinating ShortPortofino-Print Mikado Skirt featuresmooth silk mikado with red f loral printblooms and clusters of greenery, accentedwith resin embellished buttons. The jackethas a rounded neckline, long sleeves andstretch silk satin lining, and press-studfastenings make for easy front closure.Measuring 20.5 inches from the rear collar, the jacket sells for $3,295. There’s nothing quite as dramatic as an ensemble of white diamonds. These Unique Fancy Shape Drop Earrings amplifythe message with their conjoined circles that each delicately hang from a geometrically contrasting linear row. Diamonds are often the subject of metaphors

related to beauty, strength and fortitude. It’s easy to

understand the comparison. Many cultures believe

that a life like a diamond is defined by rising above

personal desires, relating to the world in ways that

benefit us all. The result is a life of lasting happiness

rather than simply fulfillment of limited, short-term

pleasures.

Wearers of diamonds are thought to seek out

their own weaknesses—not to diminish their self-

worth but rather to eliminate the f laws and polish

up the soul. Sade knew what she was talking about

with her 1984 hit song, “Diamond Life.”

Jewelry designer Norman Silverman epitomizes

the diamond life, with celebs like Catherine Zeta-

Jones, Anna Kendrick, Rashida Jones, Taylor Swift

and Jennifer Lopez showcasing the designer’s

glamourous yet classic styles.

Established in 1983, Norman Silverman

Diamonds has made its mark by offering a

prestigious selection of large and rare white

diamonds, as well as impressive fancy yellows, pinks

and blues. Starting as an apprentice cutter, he

discovered his inner passion for the finest gems, and

he visualizes each stone as a one-of-a-kind finished

piece of jewelry, making the wearer proud and

resilient.

As Silverman says, “Let the diamond do the

talking.”
