Welcome back, everyone! It’s Big Music in the summertime and I’m so pleased to offer these six weeks of blockbuster performances to you.

Our community has come to expect world-class performances from our Festival Orchestra. These amazing musicians converge on Boulder from orchestras across North America to share a summer of passionate music-making and the best our region offers for the perfect summer.

While our musicians are here they will share the enchanting Chautauqua Auditorium stage with artists such as the Academy Award Best Actor winner, F. Murray Abraham (Salieri in Amadeus), enterprising pianist Simone Dinnerstein, and the legendary Brubeck jazz family progeny.

If Mozart is your guy, I am offering five performances in one week, taking a look at the numerous areas of music upon which he made his indelible imprint. F. Murray Abraham’s insight into the creation of Salieri for the silver screen will be among so many highlights during that soul-satisfying week.

My daughter, Sinclair, will be four when the festival kicks off and I want her to have the opportunity to experience live orchestral music in the most entertaining and inspiring way. This year those great Disney songs she and I sing together will come to life in multimedia performances early in the summer. She will also enjoy our Young People’s concert, “Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage” at the end June. Please bring your young children and/or grandchildren to these performances or stop by our free and open rehearsals from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every day but Tuesdays.

Our summer festival is filled with music, old and new, from salsa to the stately palaces of central Europe. I hope you find many opportunities to join us and make this your best summer ever!

Murray Abraham; two of Mozart’s most famous works, The Marriage of Figaro and the Requiem; an evening of Rediscovered Masters, which will include Shostakovich, Haydn, and the U.S. premiere of Weinberg’s Flute Concerto No. 1; “Brandenburgs – Old & New” featuring Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 1, 3 & 6 as well as the new works inspired by those concertos as commissioned by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; and more!

Tuesday Chamber Music Series (“I like it up close and personal!”) – NEW this year, the Chamber Music Series will feature three concerts in Boulder’s newest performance space, eTown Hall in the heart of downtown Boulder. Suites and Hans Krása’s Brundibár. Composed in 1938 and originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp in the former Czechoslovakia, Hans Krása’s Brundibár is the first piece of the Rediscovered Masters Series. Featuring a children’s chorus, the semi-staged opera contains obvious symbolism in the triumph of the children over the tyrannical organ grinder. Brundibár will be presented in collaboration with CU Opera.

Known as a pioneer of the so-called English musical renaissance, Holst looked far beyond the island of Britain to find inspiration for the suite in the ancient cultures of Greece and India, in the myths and fancies of astrology and theosophy, and in the revolutionary musical discoveries of Debussy and Stravinsky. Sunday, July 24Join Michael Christie and the CMF Orchestra for a night of “Rediscovered Masters,” including Shostakovich’s “Hamlet” Suite, the U.S. premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s Flute Concerto No.1, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 73, “The Hunt,” one of his most joyous and witty works. The Rediscovered Masters Program is a series of performances celebrating Jewish composers and their music, with an emphasis on music composed before, during, and immediately after World War II. Music Director Michael Christie is committed to resurrecting these lost treasures and celebrating these artists’ rightful places in musical history.

Sunday, July 29Join us for an evening of Brandenburg Concertos - Old & New with Michael Christie and the CMF Chamber Orchestra. In 2006, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra began the New Brandenburg Project, a series of six original commissions inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. This special concert will feature Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos 1, 3 and 6 paired with the new works they inspired: Stephen Hartke’s “A Brandenburg Autumn,” Christopher Theofanidis’ “Muse,” and Aaron Jay Kernis’ “Concerto with Echoes.”

Tuesday, July 31Since its inception, La Clave Secreta has been at the forefront of Latin music, thinking outside the “music box” and beyond the prescribed formulas of the mainstream market. They are not salsa and certainly not just timba but a whole lot more, a mix of cultures and flavors with a message for serious listeners and rabid dancers alike. Today it reflects a more mature side of music and, fronted by some of the genre’s most talented professionals, it bears its own fingerprint…its own secret “clave.”

VENUE All CMF orchestra concerts are held in the beautiful Chautauqua Auditorium located in historic Chautauqua Park (900 Baseline Rd., Boulder). The convergence of cultural programming within a stunning natural environment was an integral part of the Chautauqua movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. CMF is proud to continue this tradition, and encourages concertgoers to explore the beauty of Chautauqua Park, enjoy a pre-concert picnic, and indulge in the rich cultural programming available year round. In February of 2006 Chautauqua Park was added to the list of National Historic Landmarks.

All CMF chamber music concerts are held in the ALL-NEW 200 seat eTown Hall, conveniently located in downtown Boulder on the corner of 16th & Spruce Streets.

HOP 2 Chautauqua 4 FREEThe Colorado Music Festival is committed to providing our patrons with convenient transportation options and parking solutions. We’re happy to once again work in collabora-tion with Go Boulder, Via and the Colorado Chautauqua Association to provide FREE shuttle service for all CMF performances.

On nights of performance, two shuttles will run continuous loops, approximately every 15 minutes, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (9:00 a.m. for Young People’s Concerts) until concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., and reverse the process after each performance. One shuttle will loop from downtown, starting at 13th and Pearl, and up 9th Street to the north side of Chautauqua Park. (Note: This route will require a short walk, uphill,

from drop off on Baseline to the Auditorium.) The other shuttle will loop from the 27th Way Park & Ride (at 27th and Broadway, just south of Basemar) up Baseline Road for drop off on the south side of the Auditorium. Both routes will include additional stops, marked by the Go Boulder symbol on RTD signs.

PARKINGParking in Chautauqua Park is limited. CMF encourages the use of the free shuttle. Parking is allowed on both sides of Baseline Road in the evenings during June, July and August. Parking for the disabled is available in the parking lot south of the Academic Hall.
