Miracles Come in Small Packages

Gabriela and Kevin Stear antic-ipated two additions to their familyin the spring of 2010 with the arrivalof twins. However, Gabriela experi-enced complications.

Sophia, weighing just one poundfifteen ounces, spent the first criticalhours of her life at Rose Medical Cen-ter before being transported to theNeonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Chil-dren at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Med-ical Center (P/SL). Avery, weighingtwo pounds two ounces, spent fourdays at Rose before joining his sisterin the NICU at P/SL. The nexttwelve weeks proved to be critical forSophia and Avery. Gabriela remarks,“The NICU at P/SL was phenome-nal. I truly believe that Sophia wouldnot be alive today if she hadn’t beentaken to P/SL.”

Because of the care Sophia andAvery received in the NICU at P/SL,the Stear family made a generous do-nation to Rocky Mountain Chil-dren’s Health Foundation to helpfamilies who need assistance whiletheir children are hospitalized or un-dergoing medical treatment.

Making A World of DifferenceRocky Mountain Hospital for Children:Founded By Physicians with a Vision

The grand opening of Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children is theculmination of the long-term efforts and dedication of medical staff, nursing and ancillary services and administrators. They are all dedi-

cated and committed to providing children, parents and primary care physi-cians from metro Denver, the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains with choice, ease of access and the highest quality in maternal-fetal, neonatal, pediatricand adolescent care.

Nearly 20 years ago, several of Denver’sleading pediatricphysicians, subspe-cialists and sur-

geons — along with maternal-fetalspecialists and neo-natologists — envi-sioned a leading regional pediatric careteam that provided comprehensivecare for families, from conception tobirth and continuing through adoles-cence into adulthood. Central to thisvision was the honored tradition ofdoctors and nurses using their skill, creativity and utmost compassion tobring every child and family the bestpossible care.

The journey began with a dedi-cated team of physicians who relo-cated their practices to Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. Over the

years, with its roots at P/SL, the “pediatric hospital within a hospital”grew to become known as a hospitaloffering world-class expertise in ma-ternal-fetal, newborn, pediatric andadolescent care.

With a team of more than 300affiliated physicians providing care inmore than 40 specialties in a collabo-rative, multi- disciplinary care settingand the burgeoning demand fromfamilies across the Rocky Mountainsand Great Plains, the need for morespace became paramount.

In 2008, ground was broken onthe P/SL campus for Rocky Moun-tain Hospital for Children. Today, wecelebrate the state-of-the-art facilitythat’s filled with dedicated, compas-sionate people who continue to pro-vide trusted care for kids.

WordsIn their

Dear Dr. Zimbleman, Dr. Clark and the entire staff at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL,

It hardly seems as though seventeen months have passedsince we first ended up at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at P/SL. I wanted to write this note since a mere“thank you” doesn’t seem like near enough.

There were so many questions and so much uncertainty. As the doctors answered each of our questions, and thenurses took the time to explain how to care for Shea our-selves, I never felt that any question or concern that we hadwas wrong.

During the first part of Shea’s treatment at P/SL we gotto know a lot of people and were connected with a lot of greatprograms and foundations whose assistance was tremendouslybeneficial. Wherever we went in the hospital, we were alwaysgreeted with a smile and the sincere question as to how wewere all doing. It really made us realize what a special group ofpeople work at P/SL.

I only know a portion of what you had to do in order togive Shea the third stage of the treatment with the experimentaldrug. If it was not an option to do it at P/SL we would nothave done it at all. Everyone involved in his treatment is trulyspecial. Shea became very close with his nurses and all of thedoctors, and when we got to the end of the road, it was bittersweet. Everyone truly feels like they are part of the family.

You all taught us a lot during our time there. Whatseemed like such a bad thing at the beginning turned out to beso positive in the end. You truly do make a difference in people’slives. Thank you for taking such good care of our son.

- Jason and Lisa McNally

From Grandma Nancyand Grandpa Larry McNallyOur hearts were torn with news of our

grandson having neuroblastoma cancer. It was ajourney one would not wish on anyone. Each day

of the 15 months in treatment, from the mainte-nance, house cleaning, psychologist, social

worker, Kara, nurses, and the team of assistantsand doctors headed by Dr. Julie Zimbleman, all

participated in the loving care of our grandson.

We shared tears, laughter, stories and hope withone another and big hugs. Along our journey we

met many patients and their families and wehelped one another get through each day. Along

with a strong prayer support group each steptaken was guided with care on all fronts. At

P/SL this quote fits each and every person wecame into contact with..... “Friends are quiet

angels who lift us to our feet when our wingshave trouble remembering how to fly.”

A million thanks!Nancy McNallyMayor, City of Westminster

My time was very special at

P/SL. The nurses played board

games with me, they helped

keep me on track with brushing

my teeth and taking my pills.

Thank you everyone!

Shea McNally (age 10)

Shea’s story beautifully represents the patients served at RMHC...
