PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Education Week is always a
highlight of Term 3 and there are
many opportunities to showcase
our incredible range of talent
across the creative and performing
arts as well as industrial
technology. We have been entertained by our
dance ensembles and singers at school and there
have been showcase performances for members of
our broader school community and the public at
Rooty Hill RSL and Mt Druitt Plaza. We have just
hosted the Colyton Learning Community’s (CLC)
Showcase of Performing Arts. What an amazing
two nights of entertainment by students across our
CLC primary schools and high schools.
Congratulations to all staff across the schools for
an amazing effort to make this happen and in
particular, Alex Lane and Amy Ciocca on our staff
for their outstanding professionalism and positive
energy in bringing it to Colyton High School as
hosts! A huge success and the start of a great
tradition!
HSC TIME
Term 3 saw Colyton High School students hitting
the ground running on some major projects which
have been undergoing assessment by HSC
Markers. Thank you to all the teachers across
Dance, Visual Arts, Industrial Technology and
Multimedia for supporting their students tirelessly
over the past two years, developing their skills and
exploring ideas to produce quality major works.
We also thank those parents for their considerable
support at home because the HSC can be quite a
stressful period, especially when these types of
deadlines are approaching. We wish all students
well for a good result! Preliminary feedback has
been outstanding, with many projects up there with
some of the best works ever produced at Colyton
High School. We are very proud of these students
and their teachers!

child’s literacy and numeracy skills were at, around the time of testing earlier this year. The biggest changes
to NAPLAN in the future will be moves towards doing the testing online. This should allow improved
reporting times to schools and parents. Schools are currently undergoing trial testing this term to see how it
all works. Of course the biggest impact for students, already taken effect with this year’s and future Year 9’s,
is that all students who intend on studying for and attaining the HSC will need to have achieved Band 8 in the
Year 9 NAPLAN tests they sit.
NAPLAN CHANGES
For those students who aspire to the HSC and did not reach Band 8 this year, they will be given opportunities
in future years to re-sit NAPLAN tests online in an attempt to achieve at Band 8. Rest assured that Colyton
High School is doing everything possible to support students’ ongoing improvement in literacy and numeracy
and achieving Band 8 by the time they are in Year 9. We are continuing to implement Reading to Learn and
Curiosity and Powerful Learning strategies across the whole school and are building capacity of teachers to
differentiate their lessons so that students of all abilities can achieve. We will also provide strong learning
support to improve the skills of students who need extra help. Whilst achieving Band 8 is a more than
reasonable target for all students by the time they reach Year 9 and later, Year 12, in the event that any
individual does not reach this benchmark, they will still be able to achieve qualifications of the Year 12 ROSA.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at school to discuss any concerns about this for your child, now or in the
future. We encourage all students to work to the best of their ability at all times.
SCHOOL PLAN 2018-2020
Among the exciting things happening at Colyton High School at present is the planning process for our next
school plan. Keep a look out for your opportunity to contribute to the development of our School Plan 2018-
2020. We have draft strategic directions being developed and these include:
1. Developing connected, successful and thriving students
2. Developing great teachers leading inspired learning and
3. Building everyday leaders
We are very excited about our ongoing discussions to develop and expand on these three strategic directions
that will guide what we do and what we work to achieve over the next three years.
As always, thank you to all of our school community for their tireless efforts in improving opportunities for
your children at Colyton High School and beyond.
Kind Regards

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
It's hard to believe that we are already so far into the term. Term 3 marks the last opportunity for Year
12 to complete their studies and refine their skills and knowledge in preparation for their final
assessments and the upcoming HSC examinations. For our students in practical courses, this has been a
particularly busy term as major works have been submitted.
As someone who is relatively new to Colyton High School, I have been pleased to witness the development of so
many students in such a short time. I have had the pleasure of seeing so many talented students creating amazing
works. Earlier this term, our HSC dance students under the guidance of Mrs Ciocca performed brilliantly at their HSC
showcase evening and undertook their final practical examinations over a two-day period. I was also fortunate to be
able to see fantastic, high quality Industrial Technology Timber and Multimedia works from Mr Burton's and Mr
Casey's classes as well as excellent Visual Arts major works from Mrs Grahovac's class.
With such a plethora of great student works, I am looking forward to seeing what our Year 12's can achieve in the
HSC exams. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the teachers of Year 12 for their hard work and
dedication that they have shown to Year 12. The hours of lessons, advice, marking, feedback and extra after hours and
holiday sessions is greatly appreciated.
The role of Year Adviser and Assistant Year Adviser can be extremely challenging and can also be even more
rewarding at times. The work undertaken by these teachers supporting and encouraging students, sorting out issues,
communicating with parents and teachers, advising students, advocating for them, organising events such as
fundraising activities, school jackets, graduation photos and the school formal just to mention some of the tasks
undertaken by Mrs O'Connell and Miss Fullbrook cannot be over-looked and we thank them very much for their
efforts.
I look forward to some big events on the Year 12 calendar including the Year 12 breakfast and graduation later this
term on September 21 and the Year 12 formal on November 16 at the Colebee Centre, Nurrangingy and look forward
to seeing and chatting with all Year 12 and their families at these events.
Finally, I would like to wish Year 12 all the best for their upcoming HSC examinations and congratulate them on their
achievement of a Higher School Certificate.

HSC Ancient History On Tuesday August 29, the Year 12 Ancient History class had a wonderful day at the Australian National
Maritime Museum where they had the chance to visit the ‘Escape from Pompeii: The Untold Roman
Rescue’ museum exhibit. The core study for the HSC course requires students to investigate how people
lived 2000 years ago in the town of Pompeii by using historical sources from the site. All students had a
wonderful day investigating the sources while being lucky enough to have a museum tour guide, take them
around the exhibit to explain all artefacts. The class should be very proud of themselves for representing
Colyton High School in such a respectful and enthusiastic manner. It was a wonderful experience for myself
to see how much my class had learnt over the past year and now had the chance to see the artefacts they had
been learning about in real life.

WESTERN SYDNEY APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINEESHIP EXPO
On August 29, our many students attended this expo, met employers directly, and asked their questions. I
was there and helped students to meet the different employers. We are hoping that some of our students will
get the place in some kind of apprenticeship or traineeship.
JOBQUEST BREAKFAST BBQ
Our Jobquest students have organised breakfast BBQ on August 24, and it was very successful. Mr Butler

YEAR 7 UPDATE The focus for Term 3 with Year 7 has been maintaining a high expectation as leaders for learning within all
areas of the school. Reports were handed out at the beginning of Term 3 and it was pleasing to see a number
of students achieving great results across a number of subjects. This demonstrates students have been
working hard consistently throughout the semester. It has been really positive for Miss Ciacciarelli and
myself who continue to see the large number of merits, Bronze and Silver awards that are be awarded to the

number of other students are also close to receiving their first Gold award, which is an outstanding
achievement for the cohort.
A HUGE Congratulations goes to Chelise Kita and Katelyn Kos of Year 7 who represented Colyton High
School at the SYDNEY WEST Athletics carnival in week 2 this term. Katelyn was an outstanding at Zone
finishing age Champion for the U/12’s and Chelise a close second. Both students represented our school
with great pride and performed outstanding at Sydney West. Chelise finished 2nd in her throwing event shot
put and will be progressing to NSW CHS next week. We wish you all the best.
Miss Ciacciarelli and I have been working closely with Year 7 to maintain the high standard of dressing for
success at Colyton High School. It is encouraged that students wear their uniform with pride every day. Well
done to those students who continue to wear full school uniform daily. We are grateful to have the parent
community working with us and offering support to
the children throughout the term, especially in the
colder months.
Term 4 will be a busy term with a number of extra-
curricular activity opportunities available for
students. One of these opportunities include the
Swim School Program. Students are encouraged to
participate in a 3 day program where students are
given the opportunity to build confidence in the
water as well as develop a range of essential
lifesaving skills. Payments for this has commenced.

Y7 students Naidoc Week
On the July 25, Colyton High School celebrated NAIDOC week. It was remarkable to see that we had five
outstanding Indigenous performers from the Year 7 cohort. Two of those students, Angel-Anne Spek and
Aaron Flaherty had the courage to be student speakers for the performance representing the cohort and
demonstrating the importance of their culture and heritage to rest of the school. Good leaders are
inspirational and these students demonstrate these qualities, well done!
African
Leadership
Program
Students have finished a 13 session DRUMBEAT program with Mr Tuza Afutu. The African DRUMBEAT
lessons were interactive and used experiential learning to enhance communication, leadership and team
performance. It was highly engaging, innovative and a unique experience for all the students. It’s an
exciting, hands on program involving drums, dancing and singing. A great way to inspire the rhythm in life
and culture!
Keep up the wonderful work. We are all so proud of you.
