JOB DESCRIPTION
The Community Furniture Store is a registered charity that supports people in need in the York area by reusing furniture and household appliances. We collect unwanted, reuseable furniture and electrical appliances and after processing (cleaning, testing, repair) these are sold at affordable prices through our Store. The Store is open to everyone and people with proof of a low income are eligible for 30% discount on our regular prices. The store also offers volunteer and training opportunities to local people finding it difficult to gain employment. All staff are expected to work with and support volunteers and trainees
Operations Manager
Reports to: Store Manager
Responsible for: Warehouse and Delivery Team (5 staff) plus supporting volunteers and trainees
Salary: £20,475 rising to £21,450 on satisfactory completion of probation
Hours: 37.5 hours working 5 days out of 6 (Mon – Sat) – usually between the hours of 8.00 and 5.00 but will include some early starts
Purpose of the role:
To lead and oversee operations in the Store’s two warehouses in order to facilitate the smooth running of the business, a first class customer experience, and the highest standards of health and safety.
Tasks:
Stock Management
Work with the Store Manager and Customer Services Supervisor to agree the required layout of the Store.
Lead and coordinate the work of the Warehouse and Delivery team and supporting volunteers to move goods, ensuring the health and safety of staff, volunteers and the public through appropriate manual handling technique and risk assessment.
Oversee the loading and unloading of the charity’s vans ensuring accurate fulfilment of customer orders, and the highest standards of health and safety.
Ensure that donated items coming into the Store are of suitable quality for reuse. Manage deliveries of new goods coming to the Store, ensuring that these are recorded
accurately and stored safely and securely. NB This involves some 7am starts – typically one day per week.
Identify any missing or damaged items and follow up accordingly. Work with the Store Manager to manage stock and carry out periodic stock checks
People Management
Manage the Warehouse and Delivery Team ensuring that each team member has clear guidance on what s/he is required to do, is well motivated, appropriately trained and supported.
Organise and support volunteers carrying out furniture and appliance cleaning, and paint processing.
Donation Processing
Lead and oversee the processing and cleaning of all donations to the Store including furniture, electrical appliances and paint.
Oversee and carry out PAT testing of electrical items donated to the Store, ensuring appropriate records are kept.
Health and Safety
Lead on health and safety management within the Store ensuring that risk assessments are developed and updated regularly, that all staff and volunteers are appropriately trained in health and safety requirements, and that appropriate records are kept
Ensure that effective procedures are in place and being used to secure the warehouses (and vehicles) when the Store is closed.
Ensure that all waste is dealt with promptly and efficiently, and that waste is recycled whenever this is possible; this will include taking items to the HWRC.
Participate in the cleaning rota for the Store.
General
Ensure that all record keeping related to the above is carried out promptly, accurately and efficiently; this will include use of the Cybertill EPOS/stock control system.
Work respectfully and cooperatively with others, including volunteers, at all times Carry out other tasks to support the smooth running of the Store as requested by the

Line management experience
Clean Driving licence (max 3 points)
Experience of driving 3.5T van
Experience of working with and supervising volunteers
Health and Safety Certification (IOSH)
Current First Aid certificate
Qualified PAT tester

Effective communicator – able to verbally communicate clearly with colleagues and check understanding; able to write and record data accurately
Flexible in approach to work; able to switch between tasks quickly
IT skills – able to use email and wordprocessing software; carry out internet searches and accurate data entry.
Health and Safety – proven experience of managing health and safety in an environment dealing with heavy items, vehicles and the general public.
Able to lift heavy items of furniture
Willingness to work on a changing rota including some early morning (7am) starts
Attention to detail
Good knowledge of York and surrounding areas
Commitment to the aims and values of the Community Furniture Store
