The Accent On-Air /Sunday June 7 on WTAE-TV The TV show features a one-on-one interview with Father Dan Mahoney, pastor of Holy Family Parish, Latrobe, who is celebrating 50 years as a priest and his recovery from COVID-19. Bishop Malesic outlines the diocese’s plans to recommence in-person worship. And Pittsburgh radio star Melanie Taylor, 100.7 Star FM, talks about turning pain into purpose after the sudden loss of her father, a loyal parishioner at The Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Monessen. “The AccentOn-Air” is always on at TheAccentOnline.org.

The Gospel in Everyday English Later on that day, the disciples had gathered together, but, fearful of the Jews, had locked all the doors in the house. Jesus entered, stood among them, and said, “Peace to you.” Then he showed them his hands and side.

The disciples, seeing the Master with their own eyes, were exuberant. Jesus repeated his gree ng: “Peace to you. Just as the Father sent me, I send you.”

Then he took a deep breath and breathed into them. “Receive the Holy Spirit,” he said. “If you forgive someone’s sins, they’re gone for good. If you don’t forgive sins, what are you going to do with them?” (from John 20).

Parish Support, May 24, 2020 Stewardship Envelopes

Have you ever heard someone say, “What difference does it make if I use my envelopes”? Maybe you have said that yourself? Certainly, the gift and the intent of the giver are more important than the envelope that it comes in, but there are very good reasons to “wrap your gift” in an envelope!

First, taking the time to find the offertory envelope and seal your gift inside makes it more likely that your contribution was planned and thoughtful rather than random – not just the vailable change in your pocket when the usher passes with the basket. Planning your contribution and giving yourself time for reflection, means that you won’t be caught off guard at collection time and hurriedly write a check while the lector proclaims that first reading.

Wrapping your “gift” in an envelope is also a witness to membership to this faith community. It says, “I belong to this parish, I am an active member and I support the work of my church.”

Finally, using an envelope is good stewardship of other people’s time. The folks who count the collection on Monday morning must photo-copy all of the loose checks that are in the collection basket. And then the parish secretary must look up the donors’ names and envelope numbers so that the contribution is posted to the correct account. All of which they wouldn’t have to do if the gift were in an offertory envelope. God loves a cheerful giver – and our Monday morning volunteers especially love those who use their envelopes!!
