If you are looking for lively and fun classes to attend then you’ll want to check out Duane Langworthy (picturedleft) and Alan Sweeney’s (pictured right) Gourd Pottery classes. Between them, these two have decades of valuableexperience working with this versatile vegetable to produce some truly amazing and awe inspiring pieces of art.

“We love what we do, and hope to share this passion for gourd pottery with others,” explained Duane. “We enjoyteaching through Community Education because we meet some fantastic people who want to learn somethingnew and we are happy to teach them the beautiful and breathtaking art of gourd pottery,” added Alan.

Alan has been growing and crafting on gourds for over ten years, but it wasn’t until he learned to chip carve onthem about five years ago that he found his real niche. He began teaching family and friends and was soon receiving teaching requests from peoplewho had seen his work, including requests from both the Idaho and the Washington State Gourd Societies.

Alan is a member in good standing of the American Gourd Society and several of its state chapters. He has served for several years on the board ofdirectors for the Idaho Gourd Society, and is currently serving as President. As a retired American Gourd Society Certified Master Judge, Alan’scredentials qualify him to judge any show that is in accordance with the standards of the American Gourd Society. He has authority to hold trainingto certify other American Gourd Society judges.

Duane was introduced to gourd art in 1998 when his sister gave him a few seeds to grow. After his first successful crop, he joined the Idaho GourdSociety and began learning the many different techniques used on gourds. He specializes in Gourd Mask making and weaving paper fiber rush intogourds to create beautiful one-of-a-kind gourd baskets.

He has entered his art work in several gourd art competitions and taken top awards. Duane enjoys teaching gourd art classes at the Rochester GourdPatch in Caldwell, Idaho and has also volunteered with the BSU Art Department to teach an Introductory Gourd Art Course.

We are fortunate to have Alan and Duane teaching with Community Education and thank them for their support of our program. If you, too, wantto go “goo goo” for gourds, be sure to enroll today in Gourd Pottery - Faux Raku.
