    University of Florida President

    Dr. W. Kent Fuchs

Dr. W. Kent Fuchs became the University of Florida’s 12th president in January 2015.

Most recently the provost of Cornell University, Dr. Fuchs’ experience combines academic leadership as a provost, dean and department chair; a distinguished career as an engineering professor; and graduate education in both engineering and divinity. In accepting the presidency, Dr. Fuchs outlined his overarching goal for UF: to elevate its stature, as measured by quality and comparative excellence, to that of one of the nation’s best public universities.

President Fuchs will pursue this objective by continuing to lead the university’s preeminence plan, along with a campus-wide goal-setting effort to set objectives for the next five and ten years. He will seek to significantly increase UF’s endowment; enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of university operations; and establish UF as a national leader and voice for higher education.

The UF presidency is a natural next step for Dr. Fuchs, who spent six years as Cornell’s provost. There, he led the creation of a new technology campus in New York City, launched a university wide initiative to raise Cornell’s academic stature and was a key leader of Cornell’s fundraising efforts. He was appointed provost after serving as the university’s Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering from 2002 to 2008. He joined Cornell from Purdue University, where he headed the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 1996 to 2002. He was a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois from 1985 to 1996.

He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association of the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Association for Computing Machinery, and has received numerous awards for teaching and research.

President Fuchs earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois, and a master of divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. He credits divinity school with teaching him communication and community-building skills, and to balance his innately analytic perspective with a deep appreciation for people and for human relationships. He also holds a master of science from the University of Illinois and a bachelor of science in engineering from Duke University.

Dr. Fuchs is married to Linda Moskeland Fuchs, an art historian whose scholarship centers on the sculpture of sarcophagi created in the first centuries of Christian art-making. Mrs. Fuchs has two master’s degrees in art history, from the University of Chicago and Cornell, and a third in Biblical studies, from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. She is active in campus and community life, including spending six years on the board of Chesterton House, a center for Christian studies at Cornell, the past three years as chair.

The Fuchses have three sons and a daughter, Micah, Eric, Isaac and Christine. Eric and their daughter-in-law, Mikaela, have a baby boy named Henry.

Born on an Oklahoma farm in 1954, President Fuchs spent much of his youth in Alaska before moving to Miami, where he graduated from Miami Killian Senior High School. His two younger brothers and stepmother live in South Florida.

    Greetings from the President

n behalf of the University of Florida and our administration, faculty and staff, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the Class of 2015, and to your family

    and friends.

Today’s ceremony celebrates your considerable accomplishment in completing a degree program at one of the world’s great universities. I share your pride and excitement, and I am confident that your degree — and the skills and experience you acquired while at this university – will serve you well in your careers and lives.

As you enjoy this celebration, you may already be headed for graduate school or a professional opportunity. I urge you to pursue your highest career aspirations while remaining attuned to your capacity to make meaningful and lasting change in people’s lives.

UF graduates have a long history of service to others, and I know you will continue that tradition “For the Gator Good.”

It has been a privilege to have you as a part of our community, and the university is better for your time here. As some of the first students to graduate during my first year as president, I will always think fondly of the Class of 2015. I hope you remain connected to UF as active alumni and members of the Gator Nation.

Good luck, best wishes, and Go Gators!

    W. Kent Fuchs

    Distinguished Achievement Award

    Dr. B. Joe Wilder

Dr. B. Joe Wilder is emeritus professor of neurology and neuroscience at the University of Florida. He received his medical degree at Duke University and completed an internship at Madigan General Hospital. After serving two years in the United States Army Medical Corps and a year of surgical residency training at Coral Gables Veterans Affairs Hospital, he entered private practice in 1959 as a family physician in Fernandina Beach. In 1962, he began his neurological training at the University of Florida. In 1966, he received a post-doctoral fellowship in neurophysiology and epilepsy at Stanford University. Dr. Wilder joined the UF faculty in 1966. He was subsequently awarded a clinical fellowship in epilepsy at the VA Hospital in Gainesville and became chief of the neurology service until 1994. Dr. Wilder’s early research interest was in the basic neurophysiology of epilepsy. He was one of the contributors to the concept of “surround inhibition” in epileptic foci. For more than three decades, Dr. Wilder explored the depths of one of the most mysterious neurological diseases known, searching endlessly for better treatments and potential cures. His dedication to working with epileptic patients contributed to dozens of clinical trials, leading to his involvement in the development of every new epilepsy drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration between 1975 and 1988. As a scientist committed to basic research, he is a prolific author, with more than 300 publications, five books and monographs on epilepsy, pharmacology and physiology to his credit.

Dr. Wilder was active in the development of the Epilepsy Movement in the state of Florida. Along with others, he obtained continued state funding for antiepileptic drugs and services for needy epileptic patients. He has served as a chief neurological consultant at the Tacachale Canter and has been active in the epilepsy clinic there. He is founder and president of B. J. and Eve Wilder Family Foundation Inc., formerly known as the Epilepsy Research Foundation of Florida Inc., a philanthropic foundation for education and research in epilepsy.

In November 2003, Dr. and Mrs. Wilder established The B.J. and Eve Wilder Center for Excellence in Epilepsy Research at the University of Florida’s McKnight Brain Institute. Subsequent gifts have provided additional endowed professorships and fellowships in epilepsy research, serving as powerful testimonial to the impact that Dr. Wilder’s own early fellowship had on his distinguished career. The $2 million gift from the Wilders was matched by the state to establish a professorship and two post-doctoral fellowships in the center.

Recently, Dr. and Mrs. Wilder have extended their incredible generosity again by establishing an endowed fund for Alzheimer’s research in recognition of the growing threat of another significant neurological condition and demonstrating their willingness to help search for a cure. They also have supported a wide array of other university and college priorities, including the McKnight Brain Institute, Florida Museum of Natural History and the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program.

Awards to Outstanding ScholarsThe Selection Committee for Outstanding Scholars considers grade point average, curriculum, academic awards, research projects or honors thesis. Four-year scholars must have started as freshmen at UF and have no more than minimal work at other institutions.

    Hanna Michele KivistoFour-Year Scholar

What is your proudest Gator moment?Being selected as a Warrington Diplomat. I am honored to have been able to represent the Warrington College of Business after all it has done to get me to where I am today.

What is something every Gator should know?Enjoy every minute of your time here at UF. It really will be over before you know it.

What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?Singing “We are the Boys” after the third quarter of Gator games at the Swamp. It’s the time I feel the most energy from not only students, but all Gator fans.

Who are the Gators who inspire you?The faculty of UF and mentors from my student organizations I learned from throughout my time here. They gave me the tools and confidence to push myself and obtain professional experiences through internships.

What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? My Florida Leadership Academy mentor, Horace Tucker, taught us that the sign of a true leader was not the advancement of his or herself, but the advancement of those he or she leads. That’s the kind of leader I strive to be.

What was your most fulfilling UF role?Being part of the Warrington Diplomats. I am so thankful to have been able to connect with past Gators through alumni events, current Gators through professional development events and future Gators through tours of the Warrington College of Business.

Which UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?My sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi. I joined within a week of beginning classes and it gave me my home away from home. My sisters encouraged me to get involved on campus and gave me the support and confidence I needed to succeed.

How will you pay it forward?By contributing the skills and values I developed at UF into the professional workplace. In addition, I hope to return to UF to recruit more Gators into successful careers.

What will your legacy be?The student organizations I impacted and the fellow Gators whom I have helped and given advice. My roles with the Warrington Diplomats and Employer Relations Ambassadors helped keep the connection between employers and UF students strong.

How do you bleed orange and blue? The UF motto in English means, “The welfare of the state depends upon the morals of its citizens.” I embody this motto and bleed orange and blue by working with passion, helping others and living a life with values.

    Andrea Lasha CummingsTwo-Year Scholar

What is your proudest Gator moment?By far, this opportunity to be recognized at graduation for all my hard work these past two years.

What is something every Gator should know? This university provides opportunity to everyone. Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming and hard to balance at times, but in the end it will benefit you significantly to get involved while here. Take advantage of all the resources offered on campus.

What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?Performing the Gator chomp at games or just because I’m proud to be a Gator.

Who are the Gators who inspire you?My professor, Dr. Stopka. She has given her life to help others, and I aspire to do the same.

What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator?Quoted by one of my professors, “Fake it until you become it.”

What was your most fulfilling UF role?My role as a health education intern at UF Health Shands Hospital. I had the opportunity to shadow a registered nurse, which reassured me of my decision to pursue this field.

Which UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?UF Health Shands Hospital’s Mother Baby/OBGYN unit provided me with incredible faculty and mentors who helped encourage me along my journey.

Awards to Outstanding ScholarsThe Selection Committee for Outstanding Scholars considers grade point average, curriculum, academic awards, research projects or honors thesis. Two-year scholars must have earned an Associate of Arts degree at a Florida state college and have completed the remainder of their degree at UF.

How will you pay it forward?Ultimately, I plan to become a family nurse practitioner. I plan to utilize what I’ve learned as a health education major to help others achieve fulfilling, healthy lives.

What will your legacy be?I hope to be viewed as an inspiration to others. I was not the top-ranked student entering college, but I did not allow that to define me. At any time, you can make the decision to turn your life around. I hope my academic achievement is a reminder to others that hard work does pay off.

    Brody DawkinsOutstanding Student Leader

What is your proudest Gator moment?During a difficult and tragic time in my life and my family’s, the support I received from the University of Florida community is something I will never forget. Reflecting on that time now, I am thankful and at the same time proud to be part of such a loving and compassionate Gator Nation.

What is something every Gator should know?Three things: when their next exam is, who the next team we play in football is and where tonight’s best happy hour is.

What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?“We Are the Boys.”

Who are the Gators who inspire you?Gator Veterans, the physicians and health care professionals of the UF Health Emergency Department, Steve Spurrier.

What was your most fulfilling UF role?Leading a group of 150 men who learn, mature and live together, all under the same roof.

Which UF affiliations or activities nurtured you most?Scribing in the UF Health Emergency Department offered unrivaled clinical exposure and introduced me to people I intend to model myself after as a physician. It also affirmed my decision to study medicine.

How will you pay it forward?By being someone’s positive memory during a difficult time in their life.

What will your legacy be?Someone who invested himself in everything he did, put others’ needs before his own, never shied away from a challenge and never asked of anything in return.

How do you bleed orange and blue?By shaping a better future for the state of Florida, the nation and the world.

    Lesley JacksonOutstanding Student Leader

What is your proudest Gator moment?Giving a tour to middle and high school students from my hometown. I was so proud to be able to show the charm of my school and what makes UF so great. All while inspiring them to become future Gators.

What is something every Gator should know? How strong The Gator Nation really is. It extends far beyond my classes and Gainesville. The Gator Nation is an international community with Gators in every field of work in different countries around the world. The Gator Nation is a family, and we help each other excel in all we do.

What is your favorite Gator icon or tradition?Gator Nights. I love eating midnight munchies with my friends and getting to watch some of my favorite movies. Gator Nights are a good stress reliever after a long week, while bringing out my inner kid, as I’m able to build stuffed animals, play games and just let loose. The best part about it: It’s all free.

Who are the Gators who inspire you?My sorority sisters; my adviser, LaQuita Smith; and my mentor, Jason Fraser-Nash. They are all examples of working hard toward your dreams and never giving up. They put their best in all they do and are constant reminders that I must do the same.

What was your most fulfilling UF role?Working on the executive board for the 2015 Black Student Assembly. BSA is the largest assembly to welcome incoming black freshmen annually in the beginning of the fall semester. I was able to connect freshmen to involvement at UF and influence many freshmen who, much like I was, felt lost and didn’t know how to get involved.

How will you pay it forward?By remembering where I’ve come from. Giving others a chance, just as many Gators before me gave me a chance. Most importantly, I’ll inspire future Gators and donate when I have the opportunity, keeping going the great programs and the institution that molded me into who I am today.

Awards to Outstanding Student LeadersThe Selection Committee for Outstanding Graduating Student Leaders considers the quality and scope of leadership activities, universitywide leadership, experience, special awards, recognition and recommendations of faculty, staff and students.

    David B. TronerOutstanding Student Leader

What is your proudest Gator moment?Being awarded the Attributes of a Gator Engineer Leadership Award [in 2014]. To be included in that group and to stand on stage with some of the most incredible Gator Engineers was truly an honor. Looking out over the entire freshman engineering class served as a potent reminder about the impact we can have here at UF to help those around us, and the amazing potential every Gator has to make a difference here and around the world.

What is something every Gator should know?Being a Gator is far deeper than attending the University of Florida. It is a calling to a higher purpose to lead a life of integrity, respect and courage; to inspire those around you, wherever you may be — to be the best one can be. It means to seek out the seemingly impossible challenges and stop at nothing to change the world around you. Most importantly, being a Gator means being a part of the Gator Nation, and knowing wherever you are, you will always find support and guidance from fellow Gators.

Who are the Gators who inspire you?My father. He continually serves as the perfect role model of giving back and inspiring others. He has come back long after graduating to serve on the Dean’s Advisory Board in the College of Engineering and helped develop the Engineering Leadership and Innovation Institutes along with guest-lecturing in its classes every semester. This selfless desire to give

back to the university that provided him his start is inspirational, and exemplifies to me what it means to be part of the Gator Nation.

What is the most important lesson you learned from (or taught to) a fellow Gator? To continually seek balance in life. Whether a freshman or experienced professional working to raise a family, balance is the key to a happy and fulfilling life. The University of Florida, with its multitude of student activities and organizations, multiplies the need for balance, and achieving this goal has been an ongoing challenge. However, striving toward balance has shaped my UF career to be diversified in activities that are both rewarding and enjoyable, and I owe it all to the leaders who showed me the way early in my time at UF.

What was your most fulfilling UF role?Founder and leader of AeroGators Aviation Organization. Launching an organization that provides a new aviation experience to UF is rewarding. Yet, the most fulfilling aspect of leading this organization has been to see members learn and grow through their involvement in AeroGators. It’s a special opportunity to support and lead members as they take on leadership and responsibility in the organization, and it has been a privilege to work with my AeroGators colleagues to build the university’s first student-built sport aircraft.

How do you bleed orange and blue?By taking The Gator Nation wherever I go. Anywhere I’ve lived or traveled, from internships across the country to trips around the globe, I wear the Gator logo with pride. I know that even as I leave the University of Florida for graduation this semester, UF never leaves me.

Honorable MentionThe following students have been recognized for their leadership at the University of Florida. They deserve congratulations for their contributions to the university.
