    through existing telephone line but it works differently than regular dial up modem.

    Evolution of Internety The internet traces its origin back to 1960 s, when it

    grew out of an experiment conducted by the USdepartment of defense. That network was known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), which links US scientific and academicresearchers.

    y B y 1970 s, ARPA (Advanced Research Project Agency)helped in the development of new protocol known asTCP/IP protocol for transferring data betweennetworks. TCP/IP is the core of Internet.

    Evolution of Internety In 1980 s National Science Foundation (NSF) used

    APRANET to link it five regional super computercenters at major universities so that many users couldshare their work.

    y Later on, NSF created NSFNET (National ScienceFoundation Network), a series of network for researchand education communication.

    y In 1980 s, Usenet news group and E-Mail came into

    picture. In this decade Archie, WAIS (Wide AreaInformation Server) was also created.y To give users a easy to use interface, University of

    Minnesota created Gopher, a simple menu driven

    system to access files.

    FTP allows the user to get access to the files stored in the

    directory of remote computer connected to internet.Using FTP, one can download or upload files from the

    TE LNE TThe word TELNET is derived from Telecommunication

    and Network and it allows user to Log On to a remotecomputer.

    Telnet is also known as remote login, which meansconnecting one machine to another in such a way thata person may interact with another machine as if it isbeing used locally.

    The user s computer which initiates the connection, isreferred as Local Computer or Telnet Client and, thecomputer which accepts the connection, is referred asRemote Computer or Telnet Server.

    To transmit information it uses TCP/IP protocol.
