Today Jesus gives us a lesson in commitment, and a bit of practical advice. Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Are we inspired by this advice? Are we queuing around the block to become disciples? Well no, probably not! Even for those of us who have a genuine desire to be disciples, these demands seem much too hard. So how are we supposed to take Jesusadvice? Its worth remembering that everything weve ever achieved in life has begun with some kind of commitment. However small a goal, we have first had to commit and may even have sacrificed something in order to achieve the desired result. For those of us who have ever committed to anything, we will already know that commitment doesnt just mean an involvement, it means laying everything on the line. Jesuswords may seem harsh, but what he is saying is that to be his disciple we must first understand the magnitude of the commitment that is required, and that we must be prepared to be totally single minded in our pursuit of results. Later in the same reading, Jesus gives advice for those of us who make a commitment, but are not able to keep that commitment. "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? " Jesus is giving very practical advice on weighing up the costs before making a commitment. Jesus does not need quitters! Each of us has individual God given talents that we need to apply to our individual brand of discipleship. Jesus tells us to sit down in a business like way and calculate what this individual brand of discipleship is going to cost us. Whichever way we choose to be Christs disciples, whether it is travelling half way across the world to look after AIDS orphans, or by fundraising on a home PC, Jesus reminds us that nothing less than a hundred percent commitment will do. Jesus asks us to decide on our brand of discipleship and to go for it. After we have made our commitment we mustnt waver. The very nature of commitment means that we are ruling out other choices. If there is a conflict of choice to be made between God and worldly gain we have to choose God. We of course are not going to turn our backs on our family and loved ones, but we are asked to be single minded and unerring in our discipleship. Question of the week - How must I transform myself to live Jesusgospel so that I can offer everyone his generous, compassionate, self-sacrificing love? Commitment . . . . .

Today Jesus gives us a lesson in commitment, and a bit of practical advice. “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Are we inspired by this advice? Are we queuing around the block to become disciples? Well no, probably not! Even for those of us who have a genuine desire to be disciples, these demands seem much too hard. So how are we supposed to take Jesus’ advice? It’s worth remembering that everything we’ve ever achieved in life has begun with some kind of commitment. However small a goal, we have first had to commit and may even have sacrificed something in order to achieve the desired result. For those of us who have ever committed to anything, we will already know that commitment doesn’t just mean an involvement, it means laying everything on the line. Jesus’ words may seem harsh, but what he is

saying is that to be his disciple we must first understand the magnitude of the commitment that is required, and that we must be prepared to be totally single minded in our pursuit of results. Whichever way we choose to be Christ’s disciples, whether it is travelling half way across the world to look after AIDS orphans, or by fundraising on a home PC, Jesus reminds us that nothing less than a hundred percent commitment will do. Jesus asks us to decide on our brand of discipleship and to go for it. After we have made our commitment we mustn’t waver. The very nature of commitment means that we are ruling out other choices. If there is a conflict of choice to be made between God and worldly gain we have to choose God. We of course are not going to turn our backs on our family and loved ones, but we are asked to be single minded and unerring in our discipleship. Question of the week -

How must I transform myself to live Jesus’ gospel so that I can offer everyone his generous, compassionate, self-sacrificing love?

In the event of an emergency when a priest is urgently required and there is no answer at the above telephone number please ring St Mary’s (200416) or St Peter’s (01273 452654).

Newsletter Editorial : Items for possible inclusion in the Parish Newsletter (if there is room) need to be received (in writing please) at the Parish Office by midday on Wednesday.

General Parish Information . . . . . Parishioner Registration : Every household within the Parish is requested to complete a ‘Parishioner Registration/Census’ form so that our Parish records may be kept up to date. These forms can be found in the church narthex and should be completed fully before being returned to the Parish Office. Should you move address within the Parish at any time please complete a new form and write ‘AMENDMENT’ across the top of the form. Thank you.

Hospital : Parishioners are advised that our local General Hospital (Worthing) in Lyndhurst Road does not give the names of inpatients to the Chaplaincy Department. This means that should you find yourself admitted as an emergency case to the hospital you will need to inform the staff that you wish the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy to be informed, either yourself or through a relative. If you are going into hospital as a ‘planned admission’ you are strongly encouraged to contact the Parish Priest well beforehand so that, if appropriate, the Sacrament of the Sick can be celebrated beforehand.

Infant Baptism : Infant Baptisms are intended for the children of practising parishioners only and are celebrated on five occasions during the year after parents and godparents have completed a course of preparation. There can be no celebration without this important course. The dates of the courses for the current year can be found in the application form in the church narthex (bright green). Baptisms do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Sacramental Preparation : Notice of the availability of application forms for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will be made in the Parish Newsletter between the school Summer Half Term and 31st August each year. Possible candidates for Confirmation should respond to the announcements made in the Parish Newsletter during the Autumn school term. Parishioners are advised that it is very difficult to imagine that any family/individual who is not regularly practising their faith as a member of our community could possibly be ready to celebrate a Sacrament of the Church.

Marriage Preparation : Marriages are celebrated by appointment with the Parish Priest. It should be remembered that in England and Wales six months minimum notice is required before a marriage may take place; this is a requirement of the Church for all marriages that involve a Roman Catholic (even if they are not taking place in the Catholic Church). It is also necessary that one of the parties must have a meaningful connection with the Parish. Marriages do not take place during the seasons of Advent or Lent.

Good to be back in the newsletter again as preparations are made for everything starting-up again after the summer holidays. Over the next week all our schools

will be beginning their Autumn Terms and some of our teenagers will be readying themselves to go off to college and university. Of course, Fr D has been trying to get ahead with newsletters and other things so that he can go off on his holiday without having to worry about things back home whilst he’s away. Trying to work with newsletters four weeks ahead meant that he was a little bit stressed keeping everything in his head and remembering which week he was actually writing about.

Before flying off to warmer climes Fr D has also been preparing for this year’s Reconciliation and Eucharist Programmes. He has a Parent’s Launch Evening scheduled to kick things off, explaining to parents what is involved and how they need to take a full part in their child’s preparations for these two wonderful sacraments. He always like to remind parents of the promise that they publicly made at their child’s Baptism ‘to be the first and best of teachers’ to their child in the ways of Faith.

In the past week he has also celebrated the marriages of two couples from the Parish, one at Arundel Cathedral and one in St Charles’. Having celebrated another wedding in Dublin earlier in the year he now has just one left which will be the weekend after he gets back from holiday up in Reigate. He has had several other couples that he has spent some considerable time preparing for marriage but these will be taking place either abroad or further away in this country. It’s worthwhile remembering that the rules of the Church here in Great Britain require an absolute minimum of six months notice (very often longer is needed due to a couple’s situation or the fact that one or other is from abroad or the marriage will be taking place in another country).

Fr D has also been asked to be involved in discussions concerning the government’s plans that all schools should eventually become academies. Locally at the moment the Worthing and Cathedral Deanery schools are looking at what this might mean for our communities. He was a bit wary of getting involved but felt that there ought really to be a clerical presence in the discussions and was persuaded by some of the local Primary head teachers (more meetings though - and he hates meetings!).

Holy Family 10.30 For the Parishioners

Mass may be offered for both the living and the dead and also for most other intentions. We do our best to try and accommodate specific dates but this can be especially difficult on weekends and at less than three months notice.

‘Mass Intentions’ are published in the Parish Newsletter on the weekend before they are celebrated although sometimes a Requiem Mass will ‘bump’ an intention to a later date.

Parish Harvest Celebration . . . . . Our annual Parish Celebration of the Harvest will take place over the weekend of 7th-9th October this year.

ON FRIDAY 7TH OCTOBER THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL

THANKSGIVING MASS AT THE HOLY FAMILY, NORTH

ROAD, LANCING AT 19.00

THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A HARVEST SUPPER

IN THE HOLY FAMILY PARISH CENTRE,

NORTH ROAD, LANCING

Come along with the whole of the family and join other parishioners in a supper of jacket potatoes with a selection of delicious fillings (- grated cheese, baked beans, tuna & sweetcorn and,

of course, Fr D’s signature vegetarian chilli - it is a Friday after all!), green salads, tomato salads, pickles, French bread, fruit pie and custard.

Bring your own drink! (beer, wine, juice, soft - no spirits)

There will be a Raffle on the night - prize donations always welcome

Tickets will be available after our weekend Masses during September at £1.00 a head - this charge is purely for the purposes of catering.

Any profits at the end of the evening will be added to our Retiring Collection on the same weekend which will be for this year’s C.A.F.O.D. Harvest Fast Day.

WORTHING CHURCHES HOMELESS PROJECTS

Started in 1991 by four local Christians who took soup, blankets and sleeping bags to the seafront to local homeless people. From this small beginning Worthing Churches Homeless Projects was born. Today this locally based Christian charity has grown to 56 staff members and over 200 volunteers and provides a range of services, which offer opportunities to regain independence.

Worthing Churches Homeless Projects believe that everyone has the right to a home, regardless of the difficulties and issues they may face in their lives. We believe in showing those who need our help, that the wider community are there to support them and to offer hope for a better future.

The work undertaken by Worthing Churches Homeless Projects is crucial, people who live in our accommodation receive the specialist support they need to ensure their recovery. We empower homeless or insecurely housed individuals to achieve sustainable independent living.

This year we are collecting the following items which WCHP needs to continue it’s work locally:

With an average of 80 people to feed every day, food is a commodity they are always in need of. The above items should be brought along to your normal Sunday Mass and left on the sanctuary. After our celebration of the Harvest this year (weekend of 8/9 October) the items will be delivered to WCHP for use in their work with the local homeless.

YEAR OF MERCY ARUNDEL PILGRIMAGE - The Parishes of the Worthing Deanery, in response to Bishop Richard’s invitation earlier in the year, have arranged a pilgrimage to Arundel Cathedral (and the Holy Door) on Saturday 10th September (12.00 - 16.00). All parishioners are invited to take this opportunity to go through the Holy Door during this Year of Mercy and, subject to the usual conditions, to obtain the Plenary Indulgence associated with the Jubilee. By chance Bishop Richard will be one of the priests who will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the day. Please see the poster in the narthex for further details and enter your name by Sunday evening 4th September so that names can be forwarded - Thank you. PARISH WOMEN’S GROUP LOOKING AHEAD - Our Parish Women’s Group are at present arranging a trip to the Connaught Theatre, Worthing to see ‘42nd Street.’ This is planned to take place on Friday 4th November. SEASON OF CREATION 1ST SEPTEMBER – 4TH OCTOBER - September 1st was proclaimed as the World Day of Prayer for Creation by the Orthodox Church in 1989, and many other Christian churches have joined since then, with Pope Francis most recently in 2015. It was then extended to be a month-long Season of Creation, ending on October 4 (Feast of St. Francis). ‘Season of Creation’ is a new website that presents a collection of resources for Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox and Catholic churches, on care for the planet. DEACONS’ THOUGHTS . . . .

This coming week, on the 8th of September we celebrate the feast of the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As was expressed for the Assumption of Our Lady, a few weeks back, there is really very little specifically about Mary in the gospels, as indicated by the gospel passage chosen for this celebration of her birth. We hear the text from Matthew, giving us a genealogy of her husband Joseph, and the appearance to him of an angel in a dream confirming that Mary’s child would be the Son of God.

Perhaps this is always the way that mothers will find themselves; very important and needed, but still always in the background taking second place to their children. This child would of course be the most important baby ever to be born of a woman. For that reason the woman chosen to be the Mother of God needed to be someone special, a woman free of original sin herself. Mary was that singular woman, chosen by God, and kept free of sin since the moment of her Immaculate Conception.

Mary wouldn’t want to upstage her Son, to be the focus of attention, I am sure. She fully understood Jesus’ uniqueness as the promised messiah. But I feel equally sure that Jesus is happy to see his mother honoured as someone special to all our lives. On the cross he gave Mary to the disciple to be his mother, and she is viewed as the mother of all Christians, so quite rightly we all have a great devotion to her. In the words of Maximilian Kolbe: ‘Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.’
