Dear JFCS Friends and Family,
In this issue, we celebrate our volunteers. It’s well known that the measure of a person’s character is what he does when he’s absolutely free to choose. We know that our volunteers have a multitude of options in choosing how to spend their
time; but these volunteers choose to spend their time at JFCS – and that makes all the difference – for them, for JFCS, for our clients, and for our community.
At JFCS, the opportunities for volunteer work are many and varied…• being a mentor or tutor to a school child• serving lunch to isolated seniors in our Senior Outreach Services (SOS)
program• walking with a terminally ill patient as she approaches her next life
transition as part of the Doula program• offering a spiritual connection through hospital visitation, Friendly Visitors
Program or by leading a religious service in a nursing home• offering your professional skills on a committee or as an intake worker or
office volunteer• sponsoring a community outreach event to introduce others to JFCS
All of these require time, commitment, and energy and, above all, putting one’s own needs aside to help others. This selflessness is a hallmark of JFCS volunteers.
Every one of us has his own motivation – gratitude for one’s own good fortune, the desire to do something that matters, the reward of doing something worthwhile, a sense of community obligation; but each has in common a passionate belief in what JFCS does and can do… for individuals and for our community.
To our volunteers, both personally and on behalf of the staff, the clients whom you help AND the community, we say THANK YOU. You are JFCS’ most valuable assets.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – JFCS may get the credit, but the kudos belong to you. You are our most powerful force – nothing can match the power of your passion for the work of JFCS when it comes to getting things done, spreading the word about JFCS, and moving us forward. With your continued help and friendship, we will move from strength to strength and continue to fulfill our mission for many years to come!

Thank You To Our Major Donors
On March 29th the Annual Donor Recognition event was held at The Meadows Country Club for 70 of our major donors. Sponsored by Sue Jacobson, the evening was underwritten
by Dorothy and the late Dr. Milton Jacobson, of blessed memory, in honor of their daughter’s volunteer leadership as Board Chair of JFCS.
Bea Shepard spoke about her experiences as a JFCS client which subsequently led her to become an active volunteer. Bea shared her personal story of how JFCS provided counseling and
support to her through several difficult life transitions including the death of her husband. She expressed her appreciation for the services received and enthusiastically described the meaningful volunteer service that she now provides to others at JFCS through the Senior Outreach Services Program.
In thanking the agency donors for their generosity and continued support as volunteers Sue remarked, “JFCS is able to help others when they can’t do it alone thanks to all of you.”

The Many Faces of JFCS Volunteers

Thank You For Your ServiceROz LEvy, a lay leader at Temple Sinai, provided a strong link between the congregation and JFCS. Devoted to promoting Jewish education, Roz became an active volunteer in our Jewish Healing Program. Roz organized volunteers to provide outreach to the Jewish residents at the area nursing homes and assisted living facilities during the festivals of Chanukah, Purim and Passover. Calling upon the congregants of Temple Sinai, Roz recruited volunteers to lead festival services and support the Annual Chanukah Party through donations of toys for the children and gift certificates for the elderly Russian residents at McCown Towers.
Ed SCHAyE strengthened the financial and administrative functions at JFCS through his service as a member of the Finance and Investment Committees. The owner and operator of a family transportation business, Ed provided valuable assistance with the development and monitoring of the annual budget. Not satisfied with standing on the sidelines, Ed volunteered at the JFCS Resale Furniture & More Store for five years; pricing and selling merchandise, and helping to shut down the store when it was no longer financially viable to operate. In his role as Building & Grounds Committee Co-Chair, Ed developed a maintenance repair and replacement schedule to ensure the facility is in good working condition.
Welcome Aboard!BARBARA BRIzdLE first became involved with JFCS in 1998 because she wanted, “A volunteer experience that was Jewish, local and benefited seniors and children.” Her commitment to JFCS has lead to extensive service on our Board of Directors. As a board member Barbara has served as Chair of the Finance and Investment Committee; headed the original Technology Committee and served on the Marketing and Fund Development Committees. Barbara also held Executive Board Officer positions as Treasurer, 1999 to 2001 and Board Chair, 2003 to 2005. After a one year hiatus, Barbara was re-elected to the Board and installed as the Board Secretary. Along with her husband Larry Schoenberg, Barbara will be chairing the 2008 Celebrity Chefs event. Barbara has made significant contributions to the agency including introducing a strategic planning process, institutionalizing a systematic approach to board development, and leading major donor development efforts. When asked why she chose JFCS to dedicate her time to she replied, “I chose JFCS because I believe that a social service agency is critical to improving and enhancing our community and making it a better place to live. Helping people help themselves was very appealing.”
MARIE MONSky relocated to Sarasota in 1996 after a successful career as the Senior Vice President for Women’s Apparel and President of I.Appel Sleepwear with May Department Stores. Currently a Realtor with ReMax Properties, Marie specializes in Residential/Condo Sales. Marie’s community involvement has centered on the Florida West Coast Symphony. She is an active member of the Symphony Association as well as an Executive Board Member of the Symphony. This leadership role allowed Marie to lay the foundation for an outstanding collaboration between JFCS and the Florida West Coast Symphony as the Chair of the sold out JFCS 2006 Gala, The Stars of Broadway. When asked why she chose to be involved with JFCS she said, “I am active with JFCS because I believe in the mission of the organization and the purpose it serves in the community. Being involved with JFCS offers me an especially fulfilling way to express my Jewish identity.” Marie served a one year term on our Board of Directors in 2002 and continued to be active as a member of the Marketing, Board Development and Ambassadors Committees. As a newly installed member of the JFCS Board, Marie will be assuming the role as Founding Chair of the 2007 Gala and Chairing the Community Networking Committee.

S P O T L I g H T O N V O L U N T E E R S
Sue Jacobson, a member of the JFCS Board of Directors since 2001, personifies the Jewish value of
Tikkun Olam…making the world a better place. During her tenure on the Board, Sue has served as Vice President; Committee Chair, Policies, Procedures and Bylaws; Founding Member, L’Dor, V’Dor Legacy Society; Co-chair, Women’s Leadership Council; and elected Board Chair in 2005.
Under Sue’s leadership the past two years, JFCS significantly expanded its range of services to the community. Funding was secured from the FL Legislature for our NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities) Program; the Jewish Ministry Program was expanded to include the State Correctional Facility in Arcadia; the Adolescent Diversion and Assistance Program (ADAP) was established to help youth referred from the juvenile justice system learn skills to prevent any further at-risk behavior including involvement in gangs, domestic violence or shoplifting; JFCS established a contractual relationship with the YMCA to provide case management services to families and children in foster care; and the Doula Program was initiated to assist seriously and terminally ill patients and their caregivers through end of life issues through spiritual support, counseling and compassionate care.
When asked why she chose to volunteer at JFCS Sue stated, “The simple answers are… I love the people I work with; it makes me feel that what I do matters; and most importantly, I have become a real believer in the notion that helping people to develop the skills and resources to work through their problems is a
truly significant way of helping. There is something so positive and rewarding
about empowering people to overcome life’s challenges.”
JFCS honors each Board Chair with the naming of a Volunteer of the Year Award in recognition of their legacy. The L’Dor V’Dor Award was named in honor of Sue Jacobson and presented to Theda Bohrer at the 2007 Annual Meeting. L’Dor V’Dor, defined as from generation to generation aptly describes the leadership qualities of Sue. Her parents, Dorothy and Milton Jacobson, of blessed memory,
instilled a strong sense of community and led by example, the Jewish value
of Gmilut Hassadim, performing acts of loving kindness. The L’Dor, V’Dor
Legacy Society, founded by Sue Jacobson will provide the foundation to ensure the long
term financial viability of JFCS. “It is every CEO’s dream to partner with a
Board Chair like Sue. I have greatly appreciated her support, commitment and friendship through two years of challenges and exciting agency growth. She has been the ‘Captain of our ship’ and guided it with love and wisdom,” said Rose Chapman.
As Sue’s term as Board Chair comes to an end, she will continue her involvement with JFCS as Chair of the Board Development Committee and assist with the agency’s major fundraiser, the 2007 Gala, Hooray for Hollywood, Jewish Composers of the Silver Screen. An attorney with Kirk Pinkerton, Sue will continue her community work as a member of the G.Wiz Board and hopes to devote some of her new found free time to play tennis and golf.
