4OFFICIAL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER March 2018 March 2018

We are looking forward to opening our Community Hub & Garden this spring adjacent to the soccer field on 73rd St. SW, between Weston Park and Weston Drive.

starting in march, wscrca members will be able to reserve and rent a raised bed in our community garden. go to http://wscr.ca/community-hub-garden/ for a link to rent a bed and more information. you will be able to select your bed at the time of registration from

those that are available.

the rental fee is $50 per bed per year, however, since we still have some construction to complete, we are offering beds at the reduced rate of $40 per bed per year for 2018. while most beds are built, the pathways and ground mulch must still be laid once spring’s thaw arrives.

the typical bed size is about 4 feet by 8 feet by either 18 inches or 24 inches in height.

rental of a bed includes access to water and the tool sheds, which will have some tools for gardeners to share. we will also ask our garden members to volunteer to help with keeping our site looking beautiful.

even if you aren’t a gardener, you are always welcome to visit the site and see what’s growing.

if you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected].

online shopping is a favourite pastime for many it’s easy, and done in the comfort of your own home, meaning you don’t need to battle traffic, crowds or

line-ups to get your favourite items.

but many deals you see online are too good to be true. these can range from cheap designer purses to significantly discounted electronic items—. Follow these simple steps to protect yourself:

Do youR HomEWoRk. Know exactly who and where you are buying from, fully review feedback and try to buy from companies or individuals you know by reputation or from past experience.

PAy WiTH CREDiT. many credit card companies offer consumers protection against fraudulent charges, and may even give you a refund if your card was used without authorization. never provide your personal, credit card or account information unless you are certain the site is legitimate.

ComPARiSoN SHoP. don’t be afraid to shop around, looking for comparable products at comparable prices. if the product you’re looking at is dramatically cheaper than in reputable stores, there’s likely something off.

BEWARE of ADS. don’t take ads on social media platforms or other websites at face value just because they are displayed on trusted sites. in most cases, anyone can buy an ad, and most websites and social media companies do not verify the quality or truthfulness of the advertisements they run.

uSE ExTRA CAuTioN oN ClASSifiED SiTES. beware if a seller’s ratings has no or limited feedback. never make a deal outside the auction site, and be cautious of items offered through online classified ads for extremely low prices. you may want to use an escrow service like paypal for payment. it will hold your payment and only release it to the seller once you have confirmed that you received what you paid for.

if you do fall victim to an online shopping scam, contact your provincial or territorial consumer affairs office and consider getting independent legal advice to examine your options.

Let’s talk lemons. most of us use these little guys for giving baked

goods a zesty kick, adding flavour to savoury dishes, and making the infamous lemonade; but not only do these powerhouses pack a flavour punch, they’re also health superstars! Lemons are a good source of vitamin c, they promote digestion, and help give you healthier-looking skin. and don’t let the sour reputation fool you; when diluted in water, lemons make your water taste great!

especially this time of year, lemon water can be a great way to stay energized. the ideal way to enjoy lemon water is served warm (not boiling) first thing in the morning, to kickstart your digestive system. this also stimulates the liver, so your liver is in tip-top shape for flushing out toxins during the day. the only thing you should be wary of is your tooth enamel. Lemons are quite acidic which can erode away enamel if you drink too much lemon water. either enjoy it through a straw, or rinse out your mouth after to protect your pearly whites.

to craft delicious lemon water, follow our formula below.

Perfect lemon Water:

• a big glass of warm - not boiling - water (about 750 mL)

• ½ - 1 lemon

• optional: fresh ginger

1. Zest the lemon and keep the zest in a container in your freezer. use this zest for baked goods, marinades, or fancy cocktails later on.

2. wash your lemon well. squeeze the juice into your water and add the whole lemon into the glass, too.

3. slice ginger root and add to the jar, if using.

4. enjoy!!

Cougar ridge residents association (Crra) Update – Q1 2018

winter is in full swing again this year! as you look out your window at huge snowbanks and snow covered lawn furniture, flower beds and landscaping are probably the furthest thing from your mind…however; your crra board is still hard at work, planning ahead for 2018. Let’s work together to continue to make cougar ridge a beautiful community to live in.

Crra 2017 annual general Meeting

our 2017 annual general meeting was held on october 24, 2017. thank you to all that attended. a new board of directors was elected at the agm. the new board is comprised of five returning members and two new members. we are thrilled to welcome our new volunteers! the new board had its first meeting on november 15, 2017 and we continue to meet once a month.

Volunteering for the crra is a great way to get involved in your community and have your voice heard with regards to landscaping and beautification of cougar ridge. please consider volunteering in the future. we also urge you to attend the agm each fall, to hear from your board of directors and share your ideas.

Reminder 2017 CRRA fees: 2017 CRRA annual fees were due June 29, 2017. our management company, acms, sent out the invoices on our behalf. please ensure your 2017 fees have been paid and that your account is up to date. Fees should be made payable to the cougar ridge residents association and mailed to acms directly. you also have the option to pay your fees via interac e-transfer.

For information regarding the status of crra annual fees, calendar year and arrears, please contact acms directly. email: tomoko sato at [email protected] or phone 403.253.7525 ext. 4201. please remember to advise acms when you sell your home, to ensure their records are accurate and up to date. their website is www.acms.ca alternately, you can also email us at [email protected]

for those with accounts in arrears, collections procedures will follow. Please remember that your fees are mandatory and you agreed to pay these fees when you purchased your home, as per the encumbrance on your land title.

2018 CRRA fees: invoices for your 2018 annual fees will be mailed out by acms in may and fees will be due on 29Jun2018. please keep an eye out for your invoice and pay your invoice on time.

Roads and Traffic

please note that all concerns regarding roads and traffic in and around our community are outside the scope of the crra. please phone or email the city of calgary’s 311 system with any issues or concerns. doing this online is your best bet, as it allows you to track your request/concern. we are aware that the intersection of old banff coach road and cougar ridge drive has become a problem. please raise your issues with 311 and/or your councillor Jeff davison. the more people who express their concerns, the higher the chance of us getting the traffic light we need at that intersection.

Landscaping

we hope you were pleased with the wonderful landscaping work completed by our contractor, pixie gardens, in 2017.

here’s what’s on our radar for 2018 so far…

• additional tree planting will continue on the west berm.

• additional planters will likely be added at the paskapoo slopes section of cougar ridge. more flowers will be planted throughout this section.

• Flowers will be planted at all the main entrance areas and boulevards, as well as in all the planters already located in the parks, near mailboxes, along boulevards, etc.

• additional boulevard beds may be dug, so that more flowers can be planted in the highly visible areas where cars come through.

if you have any ideas for potential landscaping enhancements for 2018, or know of potential problem areas, please email us at [email protected] we always love to hear from the community.

Who are we?

the crra is a non-profit organization responsible for the ongoing maintenance of common spaces as well as landscaping enhancements in the community of cougar ridge. a volunteer board of directors manages the crra. these individuals are cougar ridge residents elected at the association’s annual general meeting.

the crras mandate and objective is the beautification of cougar ridge, through the management of neighbourhood enhancements such as flowerbeds, entrance areas, planters and extra landscaping and maintenance of city boulevards, medians and parks. These enhancements are only possible through the annual CRRA fees, which are mandatory and listed on your land title.

the crra is a separate organization from the west springs cougar ridge community association. the wscr community association is also a volunteer-based organization with various responsibilities including issues affecting the community, sports activities, a community newsletter as well as community events.

the crra will continue to submit regular articles to be published in the wscr community association newsletter, so that you are kept informed of what is happening in the community with respect to landscaping. please also check our website for new information and updates: www.mycougarridge.com

luCky AND

PRouD.that’s how a lot of people describe their feelings when they nominate a snow angel. many are seniors without the strength to clear their walks. others may be on the mend from surgery or an illness and their physical ability is limited. sometimes it’s a neighbour who is just having trouble coping with added responsibilities in his or her life.

when you pick up your shovel to clear your walk this winter, take a few extra minutes to help a neighbour too. you’ll make it easier for everyone to travel your neighbourhood and build a sense of community at the same time. For more information, visit calgary.ca/SnowAngels.

March 2018 12OFFICIAL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER March 2018 March 2018

renovating your kitchen can be an experience of a lifetime and a positive one if you have the right start. however daunting as it may seem at first, the apprehension about following through with a kitchen renovation can definitely be removed from the equation. once you are seriously sure that you are moving forward, the first person you should speak to is your design consultant, who has been through the process with many other clients and can educate you on what to expect and where you need to start.

at that point, you can set your sights on what you need to do next, enabling you to set an approximate end date. there will definitely be bumps in the road, but if you are prepared to go with the flow and just look to solving the problem at hand, it will go a lot easier. your design consultant at merit kitchens is there to answer any questions you might have.

whether you are hiring a contractor or coordinating the renovation yourself, you will still need to be aware of the process. here are a few tips to get you started:

1. meeting with your Design Consultant – Visualize what your dream kitchens looks like to you. bring pictures that

you’ve seen online and keep in mind that not only is it important to have a beautifully designed kitchen, but it’s also just as important to have great function.

2. Have a Site measure Completed – your design consultant will need to complete a site measure to get the perfect fit for your kitchen cabinetry. this also allows you to have a discussion about your thoughts while you both are actually in the space.

3. meet at the Showroom – after your site measure, your design consultant is ready to ‘put pen to paper’. based on all of your thoughts and ideas, your kitchen design begins to come to life. at this point, a quote for budgeting purposes is also created. your design consultant will set up a time with you to review your kitchen drawings and costs.

4. final sign-off – once your design consultant has captured all of the items that you are wishing for, they will ask you to come into the showroom for a final sign-off meeting. this involves reviewing the 3 dimensional layout of your new kitchen, all colour choices, cabinet door style and hardware.

Visit our merit Kitchens showroom for a Free consultation.

This involves reviewing the 3 dimensional layout of your new kitchen, all colour choices, cabinet door style and hardware.

successful investing is a slow and steady journey. it requires patience and dedication over the long term. the good news is that the longer you invest, the greater the opportunity to grow your savings.

some tips to help you manage your investments over time:

•Chooseyourinvestmentsbased on when you expect you will need the money. different investment funds are designed to meet different timing needs.

•Investyourmoneyinavariety of asset types. this could include equity funds, bond funds and money market funds from a variety of sectors, such as financials, healthcare and technology. this investment technique is called “diversification”.

•Ifyouneedtowithdrawmoney earlier than planned, take it from an investment that does not charge a penalty for early withdrawal.

•Reviewyourinvestmentsregularly, especially if you experience a major life change.

•Whenitcomestoinvesting,it'simportant to start early and take the steps needed to build your confidence. a financial advisor can help you invest over time, teach you better saving habits and prepare you for retirement. Find more information online at investorcentre.ific.ca

Hello Calgary –Bow!thank you to those of you that were able to attend the alberta transportation information session on February 27. i am pleased that the air and noise monitoring data was available to review and that experts were present to answer questions about the data and the project.

over the past year, in collaboration with the community, i have worked to communicate the concerns and comments of residents close to the project with alberta transportation. together, we have achieved a number of accomplishments that benefit those directly impacted by this important infrastructure project. we raised the berm from 3 metres to 4, had trees planted along 500 metres of the buffer zone between the berm and the residential property lines and have confirmed that an additional 30 trees will be planted for the wentwillow community.

in response to concerned residents, a fourth air quality monitor arrived on-site on January 30. this monitor is installed on the top of the east berm between residential property lines and the crushing operations between the two previously installed monitors. in response to the consistent correspondence i received from residents, all existing air and noise monitors were moved between 10 and 30 metres around the site. this should remedy the concerns raised about the quality of the data these monitors are recording. the data can be reviewed at: https://www.transportation.alberta.ca/sw-crrgp.

i have asked mr. hussain to complete an in depth review to explore the possibility of moving the gravel crusher further away from residents. i will be following up regularly until i have received an answer and will keep residents apprised with updates. please review my Facebook @DeborahforCalgaryBow or call or email my office for updates and important notices. as this project evolves so do the needs of nearby residents, you are encouraged to continue to communicate with me and my team by telephone (403-216-5400) or email ([email protected])

held annually on the third saturday of June, neighbour day is an opportunity to get together with your neighbours and celebrate our strong community spirit in calgary. this year Neighbour Day will be held on Saturday, June 16.

neighbour day originated in 2014 to celebrate the incredible outpouring of support and generosity neighbours demonstrated after the 2013 floods. now it has evolved into an annual celebration of what makes calgary such a great city – namely our strong and caring communities.

neighbour day continues to grow each year. Last year, the city saw a large increase in the amount of permitted events from the previous year.

this year, the city is once again waiving its fees for block party permits and greenspace bookings for approved neighbour day events that take place on June 16.

the city wants all calgarians to celebrate and are encouraging as many people as possible to host a local community event.

Visit calgary.ca/neighbourday for more information.
