GUNDIAH COMMUNITY CHRONICLE

Edition Number 77Well, its hard to believe that its getting very closer to Christmas! I mean, it was only the other day that Pauline put the Christmas tree lights away! I must also be getting old as I now have great-grandchildren on the way... another generation of Keightleys and another round of wonder and awe at Christmas time. But let’s think of underprivileged children too! Let me know which you think is a worthwhile charity for aiding local kids and we will let everyone know.BAITING - Next baiting day is Friday 14th October, meet at 9am at the Purple Building, Gundiah. New Baiters, please ring Council and register with Col Zemek 1300 79 49 29. THE GUNDIAH BRIDGE-I spoke with the bridge supervisor yesterday regarding the construction programme, and he was pleased with progress. When I asked him asked for details of the work his response was rather clouded, but he did comment that the bits of concrete each end were poured. I asked him what were they for and he said that he could not divulge engineering terms. I think he hadn’t a clue, so I will check with the school kids.MUSEUM. We had a rather heated meeting/AGM at the last get together. Respect for the many who have invested their time, money and knowledge into the Museum was overlooked for the letter of the law and a bit of control. Bauple & District museum was set up by a group of locals who wanted to pass the district history to future generations. Tradition and ground rules count. That’s not to say things cannot be changed, they can, but via a process of discussion. Consequently the AGM was postponed to September. As outgoing president, my thanks goes to many wonderful people including our daily volunteers. THIS MONTHS JOKE-Two guys were sitting and chatting in the pub.”I didn’t sleep with my wife before marriage. Did you?””Don’t know mate. What’s her name?” Trevor Keightley 0456916111

Down Memory Lane A CHILDHOODIN BAUPLE As told by Marie Duncan (nee Anderson) Pt IIIPrevious installments in Dec 2014, Aug 2016.)

Oops. Most of my spare time was spent with my sister. One day we decided to go fishing in the creek down past the Sunday school. Being the eldest I volunteered to use the mattock out in the back yard to dig some worms. Des was only a toddler and decided to help at the same time as the mattock swung back. He cried as blood dripped from the head. In those days we had no ambulance, so we had to do our own first aid. Mum fixed him up then came looking for me. But I hid for a few hours until things had cooled down. The Boarding House. At the time my mother turned our home into a boarding house by opening up the dining room for around 30 mill workers and our family for 3 meals a day. But guess who got the washing up and cleaning the floors? Most of our supplies came from Maryborough and meat was purchased from Connors meat cart before the butchers shop was built across the road. The meat was kept in sack bags of ice to slow the melting process.Dancing at the Band Hall. I learned to dance at the age of eight at the Band Hall just up the hill from the shop and across Warlock Street, later named Band Hall Road. It became one of my favourite places. The Brass Band was the highlight of the evening with families and the Mill workers joining in the fun. I never missed a dance but I was always in trouble with my mom for wearing out my shoes. On more than one occasion, I wanted to go dancing but had no shoes, so one of the men from the boarding house would saddle up old Doll the horse and ride into Tiaro to get me a pair of shoes so I could go dancing.First Suitor. When I was only a child my earliest suitor was a very learned, elderly man who had partially regressed to childhood. He was a constant visitor to our home and often presented me with flowers or bunches of carrot tops that he told my mom was a bridal bouquet.Getting Around. Most of my time was taken up working in the boarding house. One of my highlights was going to Maryborough in Dad’s horse and buggy. We gave a lift to Alf May once and he sat on the back of the buggy. As

The Battle of Long TanAugust marks the 50 Year anniversary since this conflict in the Vietnam War. Late afternoon on the 18th August 1966 in South Vietnam in pouring rain amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company of 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for there lives holding off an overwhelming enemy force of 2500 hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. With their ammunition running out, their casualties mounting and the enemy massing for a final assault, each man begins to search for his own answer and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage. Only the quick response of a New Zealand artillery battery to desperate calls for support saved D Company from annihilation. The battle of Long Tan became one of the most savage and decisive engagements in ANZAC history but sadly not before 18 Australians and reports of 245 to more than 500 enemy were killed. We must never forget that sad day of the 18th August 1966; THE BATTLE OF LONG TAN I am thinking of all that served that day, also for all who served during the Vietnam conflict. we trotted along my father happened to look back and found that Alf was not with us. The back of the buggy had broken off and Alf with it, so we had to turn around and look for him. When in town we got lots of treats such as icecream, pigs trotters and prawns.Sundays. On Sunday mornings the family and boarders would get dressed up and load into Dad’s Ford and go to Miva crossing. One of the men, Walter Hoffman, would get down into the water and the others would have sticks with string attached Walter would stroke the eel’s head and slip the rope over the head and the others would pull the eels out of the water. One Sunday, around 1a.m. after a night of considerable drinking, my father and the boarders from the mill decided to go to Hervey Bay for a change. So everyone piled into the Ford and set off through the trees. There were no roads and plenty of bumpy tracks causing the passengers to slide along the seats and fall out, but miraculously the outing was completed without serious injury.(Continued page 5)

The Anne ReportGreetings Friends,Have we had winter yet - I hadn’t no-ticed? Bodes ill for a hot summer.Bauple Economic Workshop. At the request of community mem-bers, a motion was passed at the Council meeting 27th August, that I, as Councillor for Small Community Development, appoint a committee of Bauple residents and interested people to research and develop an economic and community plan for Bauple. As part of imple-menting that resolution, a public workshop was held in Bau-ple Saturday 19th which served two purposes. The workshop was facilitated by Angela Koning and the first part involved brainstorming ideas. There were some really interesting ideas put forward. The second part of the workshop involved in-dividuals nominating for the committee and putting forward their reasons for being on the committee. I thank those people who attended and also those who put their name forward. As per the resolution, I have the responsibility of choosing the final committee and will announce the committee members at the end of the week.Roads. On another matter, I have been asked to list out the capital works for road upgrades (not maintenance) for Divi-sion 2 as per the budget. The planned works include:•Drainage construction, Price and Burgess Street, Tiaro •Drainage construction, Sanderling Drive, Poona •Construc-tion and Additional Investment, Arborsixteen Road (Arborten Rd - Bradford Rd), Glenwood •Construction and Additional Investment, Bauple Drive (Crest 1), Bauple •Construction and Additional Investment, Weber St (Wilkinson Road end), Tuan •Construction and Additional Investment, Woongool Road, (west of Nerada Road), Tinana •Construction and Additional Investment, Mackellar Street, BaupleSmall Communities. Invitations have been sent out to progress associations, chambers of commerce, etc seeking a couple of representatives from each group to share in a morn-ing tea at City Hall in Maryborough. The idea is to share ideas and issues from each of the small communities and to give me an opportunity to hear from as many as possible. On that note, it is my goal to attend a meeting of every small commu-nity group in the Council area before Christmas (more often than once if I can). If you have a meeting scheduled, can you please send me an email so I can put it in the diary to attend if I am able.Pest Control. For those on the land, the new Bio Security Act has now become law. Council is required to update the pest management plan. Council has also moved to work with other Wide Bay Regional Council’s to adopt a regional strat-egy to management of pest and weeds. Until next time, keep well and safe. Anne Anne Maddern

A Childhood in Bauple - continued from page 3

In 1925 my mother took ill and was sent to hospital. At the age of 14, it fell on me to look after the boarding house until Dad’s sister came out from Tiaro. Mom was to spend several months in hospital and never went back to Bauple. The Boarding house was sold and eventually moved to Maryborough and our family left the district.Looking back on my life in Bauple, the one aspect I remember most vividly was a sense of freedom. From an early age until I was 14, when we left the area, I used to wander through the surrounding bush land, went to all the dances and nothing bad ever happened to us. Today’s children may have more toys than we ever had to pass their time but they have lost many of the advantages which we, in those days, took for granted. We had the protection of a community spirit which enveloped everybody as in an extended family; the surprise and the wonder of an age of innocence and the joyous anticipation what the future might hold for us. –Marie Duncan (Nee Andersen)This concludes the story by Marie Duncan. I hope you have enjoyed her perspective on our past. Trevor Keightley 0456916111

Scouts in Action Bauple Scout section have been participating in Scouts in Action month in August, which this year focuses on 100 years of Cub Scouts. They have been doing activities from when scouts started and learning about what scouts of old had to learn for their law as against what they have today. They reckon they have it easier, they have also joined the Cub Pack for a program. Some of the scouts are attending an abseiling and archery day at Wyper Park, Bundaberg on the 28th August. Above: Lance Stone (Maryborough Chamber of Commerce, Cr Paul Truscott, Darryl Stewart (Tiaro Chamber of Commerce) and Cr Daniel Sanderson are interviewed by the TV stations regarding their plans for an RV-friendly region.

MARYBOROUGH REVITALISED: Potential RV Capital of Australia - A no-cost industry worth millions a year.Every day a billion-dollar stream is slipping through the Fraser Coast on the Bruce Highway. Neither Maryborough nor Hervey Bay are on the radar, not flagged in the hard copy and on-line free short-term parking guides that are now the travellers’ bibles. The “RV Friendly” sign alone is estimated to be worth between $300,000 and $1m-plus in extra spending annually in a community, depending on how well the hospitality mat is rolled out and how skilled retailers are in luring RV owners into their premises. Parking space (free or low cost), with or without access to toilets, for a minimum of 20 vehicles is required before a town is given RV Friendly status. In addition to the obvious and necessities (fuel, groceries, bottle shops, pharmacies), RV travellers will make a point of supporting towns that support them. They spend money on servicing, repairs, upgrades and modifications for

their vehicles and house compartments (tyres, auto electrics, welding, structural repairs, mechanics, camping equipment, computers and electronics, plumbing, flooring, upholstery); personal services such as hairdressers, massages, dentists and all health care; experiences in tours, learning opportunities, museums, historical venues; markets, festivals, sport facilities (golf courses, public swimming pools), concerts; bakeries, cafes, butchers, regional produce, postal services, newsagents, souvenirs. An added benefit is in the real estate investment realm. Some RVers who decide to return, invest in house and land and either run their businesses from here or retire.Where we are nowThe Queensland Government two years ago encouraged councils to seek new ways to gain a greater stake in the burgeoning camping demand. Councils now have the ability to provide free or cheap short-term parking for up to four days. The Fraser Coast Regional Council’s camping strategy provided three areas, two in Hervey Bay and one in Maryborough, where only four vehicles could park. The effect on the economy is negligible. Towns and small cities that are benefitting from the RV industry provide 50 to 500 spaces, sometimes in more than one area, for RVs. The most effective way to enhance our economy is to gain RV-Friendly status from the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia by providing the minimum 20 sites in our cities and towns. If you have read this far, you should be thinking the words: No cost, no loss, no detriment, no brainer. Darryl Stewart.

Architecture buffs wantedTHE organisers of Maryborough Open House are looking for volunteers for this year’s event on Saturday, September 24. Volunteers greet visitors and answer questions about the buildings; sell pro-grams at selected sites; count visitor numbers and direct and manage queues. The shifts are 3.5 hours long from 9.45am to 1pm or from 12.45 to 4pm so there is time for the volunteers to enjoy the buildings before or after their shift. If you would like to volunteer, visit www.maryboroughopenhouse.com.au.

Good CitizensLeft: Mayor Chris Loft awarded Trevor & Pau-line Keightley Citizenship Awards for over 20 years of service in the community at Council Meeting on 17 August, 2016. Trevor and Pauline ‘retired’ to their farm in Gootchie 25 years ago and now have ‘retired-retired’ to Dundowran beach. They are still involved with Bauple Museum, QCWA and of course, the Gundiah Gazette.

Asperger’s Support GroupHello everyone, the Asperger’s Support Group meets in an office down the hall next to the library in Forgan Terrace Tiaro. We support adults who live with and are dealing with spouses, partners and adult children who have Autism/Asperger’s.The meeting is held in private and we discuss ways and means of making our lives easier. It is a lonely, frustrating, argumentative life. This is not diagnosed a lot in adults, their behaviour usually tells you. They are quite clever and often focused on something in particular, computer or TV, live by the clock for meals, have no empathy at all. What happens if you hurt yourself? If you would like to come and have a cuppa with us, if you aren’t sure what you are dealing with, we are not professionals, just ordinary people dealing with a similar problem. We help each other because we understand what life is like. All are welcome. We meet the last Wednesday in every month from 9-12 in a private room. Please phone Pat 4193 9239 if you have any questions. Pat Davies 41939239

MICHAEL WEEKES SAYS Where is the water? In January 2009 “The McNamara Water Plan: Securing our water future” was published by then member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara. Two things to note: Firstly, the danger that Lentahals dam will no longer be sufficient to meet Hervey Bay’s water demands by 2018. The second was addressing the regions water needs. We can see little has been done since 2009 about the whole region’s need for water. No Plans. The plans for growing Hervey Bay continue while the danger of running out water in dry conditions is ignored. What about the need to secure and expand irrigation access for farmers? Adaptation to increased variations in the weather due to climate change? While there are a combination of strategies that need to be considered to truly secure our water future, and, like all infrastructure projects it takes time and money, it is critical that we get started immediately. The key is piping water from Paradise Dam to Lentahals Dam and on to Teddington Weir and ultimately to irrigation systems (and industrial and residential uses) in the southern Fraser Coast. What about the cost? In 2009 the estimated costs for the Paradise Dam pipeline was $100 million. Paradise to Teddington was $20 million, creation of off-stream storage around the Mary River was $60 million (including upgrading the pump station and related infrastructure) and upgrading the channels and of farm infrastructure was $20 million. $200 - $300 million as likely figure range for a critical and future proof water infrastructure project. Considering the Fraser Coast Regional Council has quarantined $10 million just for a sports precinct worth a total project cost of $100 million, these figures do not seem so great.Action. I call on the Fraser Coast

BAUPLE iKIOSKOpposite Bauple Museum in the purple building, in the centre of Bauple township, we have a Government-granted Internet Kiosk, one of only four Broadband for Seniors kiosks in all the Fraser Coast. We wish to thank people for their kind donations of equipment and paper.Free Wi Fi. This is a free service for locals, seniors and visitors to our area. All Hinterland residents are welcome. You can find help for anything you might like to do with a computer, laptop or tablet: you can learn to use emails, stay in touch with family and friends on Facebook, register on government websites and connect with Centrelink, Medicare etc., buy or sell on Ebay, learn about Paypal, banking, or get help setting up a new computer. You can learn at your own pace to do everything you want on our computers. Our volunteers are happy to help. Privacy is assured, and a registered JP is available Mondays. Please drop in. Regional Council to immediately release that $10 million for the sole purpose of planning, impact assessments, and initial project design of this vital infrastructure project. I call on the state and federal governments to commit to financially backing this project for the future of our region and the prosperity of our state and nation. Fraser Coast Regional Council must prevent further expansion of water infrastructure in Hervey Bay until a secure, long-term water supply is established. With one good drought our water could be exhausted, farms would not have irrigation, towns people will not have water to drink or to flush their toilets. Can we afford the current path? I think not! All the best, Michael Weekes0498580563 [email protected]

Senior’s Morning Tea The Seniors Morning Tea at Bauple Band Hall on the 16th August was a great success, with buses bringing the folks from the aged care homes in Maryborough and Tiaro to enjoy the wonderful morning tea and sing-a-long. Many thanks to those wonderful folk for making it the great day it was, the bus drivers, carers, CWA ladies, the FCRC Councillors, U3A, MADCOTA, Australian Hearing, and Ann Maree for putting this event together. It was pleasing to see the locals taking advantage of the free hearing tests be-ing carried out during the morning. The free lucky door tickets, was very lucky for some; several beautiful, donated gifts were won.If you didn’t make it this year, it’s hoped that Gundiah will be the place to visit next year for the Seniors Morning Tea. Thank you to the 78 happy folk for at-tending the Bauple event. Gail Nancarrow

Miva Branch QCWA:QCWA Miva Branch has been rather slack when it comes to entering State Competitions this year but the news of a “Bush Poetry Recitation Competi-tion” and “Poetry Composition Con-test” being added to our Contests was greeted with great interest. Two of our members have been elected to positions on the Gympie & South Burnett Division Executive.Katrina van den Brenk has found her-self not only taking on the positions of DVConnect, and Public Speaking & Essay Convenor, but now has an extra role in the new position of Mar-keting & Publicity Officer on the Di-vision Executive - just as she thought things would be quieter as she finish-es her term as Division Secretary. Bev Schloss has been re-elected as Zone 3 Vice President Two motions were passed on to Divi-sion recently for discussion at a State level: one regarding the use of Per-sonal Locator Beacons by rural and other workers in remote areas; and the other a recommendation re. Pub-licity Officers on QCWA Region and State Conference committees. The branch has made donations to the Membership Support Fund at State Office, and to the Fundraiser appeal. Events coming up include Miva’s Spring Fair on 8th October (see flyer) and making slices and cakes for the Munna Creek Music festival.

Divide your block Council is offering landowners the opportunity to divide their house block and receive a $12,800 discount on infrastructure charges. Conditions apply. FCRC
