Where do you keep your tomato sauce?

KenBurrowes

Fridge

I was horrified last week to

find out I was the only one in

a group of 10 who puts their

sauce in the fridge.

Tomatoes are full of acid and

once the bottle is opened it

needs to be stored in the

fridge, as per the instruc-

tions on the label. Failing to

do so results in the product,

spoiling quicker.

Maybe I’m a stickler for the

rules, but last week a Jamie

Oliver-trained chef told me

she stored her sauce in the

fridge, so if it’s right for her,

it’s good enough for me.

Pantry

There are a couple of very

simple reasons why the

sauce belongs in the pantry:

cold sauce on top of hot food

equals cold food; and cold

sauce thickens up, meaning

it’s a battle to get it out of

the bottle. Now the fridge

sauce set will tell you it’s a

health issue – fooey! I’ve

been dining out on pantry-

kept sauce for half a century

and I’m a picture of health

(well, that may be an exag-

geration but let’s just say

I’m yet to endure a pantry-

kept sauce infliction).

Urban circus performers from 360 Allstars are powering up to entertain crowds at this year’s Fringe World Festival. Picture: Bruce Hunt www.communitypix.com.au d490269

MUSICIAN Gene Petersonspent enough time workingon other people’s showsthat he accidentally gainedthe experience to make hisvery own.

The result was a rein-vention of traditional cir-cus where the twist comesfrom replacing stereo-typical circus art formswith contemporary street

urban style, performedwith video projection andto a live soundtrack.

“Instead of acrobats, wehave breakdancers, insteadof a juggler there is a bas-ketball freestyler, insteadof a unicyclist there is aBMX rider and so on,”music director and drum-mer Peterson said.

“And it’s 360, so all these

art forms feature a rotationof 360 degrees performed byAllstars, who are the bestin the world at their indi-vidual discipline.

“It really is an interna-tional dream team cast.”

The show has been ontour for the past sevenyears in theatres and festi-vals, ranging from regionaland remote communities in

Outback Australia toBroadway at Times Squarein New York.

There have been sold-out seasons at Edinburghand Adelaide Fringe.

The 360 Allstars per-formers are ticking offtheir first Fringe Worldfrom a list of accomplish-ments, with a premiere sea-son at Teatro, The Wood-

side Pleasure Garden untilFebruary 10.

“This tour now is 100shows around Australiaand is the beginning of ournext world tour,” Petersonsaid. “We’re very early onin our Australian leg, which is 100 shows in 114days and then from that wego back to Europe andAmerica and continue for

the next 18 months.”Peterson said despite

Fringe World featuringmany fantastic circus acts,360 Allstars sat in its ownbox within that multidisci-plinary, circus-physicaltheatre genre.

“It’s a full feast for thesenses and for all ages.” hesaid.

Personalserviceand care

Options toremain inyour homeBEING able to continue tolive independently at homewhile feeling safe and wellsupported is a key goal formany older Australians.

When consideringwhether to stay at home ormove into residential agedcare, individuals and theirfamilies want to under-stand the type and qualityof care available, how wellit meets the person’slifestyle preferences andwhether it can increase oralter in response to chang-ing needs.

Understanding how agedhome care is funded canalso be challenging, withmany people unaware oftheir potential eligibilityfor government-funded as-sistance to continue livingat home with the help of a

Home Care Package.Home Care Packages

provide in-home care andsupport to help older peopleto stay in their home andare funded by the Aus-tralian Governmentthrough Medicare.

An individual’s eligibili-ty is determined via anAged Care AssessmentTeam assessor (ACAT),who will meet the person athome to determine whichlevel of care best fits theirneeds.

If you need support butdon’t have access to one ofthe Government-fundedservices, you may prefer afee-for-service program, with many providers avail-able.

Braun muscles way to victorySCARBOROUGH TennisAcademy player NoahBraun (10) has won histhird singles tournament ofthe summer.

The youngster, whostarted playing when hewas six, also won a doublestournament this season.

The Junior Tennis Tour10-and-under events wereheld at Applecross, Mid-land and Nedlands tennisclubs.

Coach Rick Willsmoresaid Noah had a great com-petitive spirit and an excel-lent volley game, whichwas unusual for a playerhis age.

“He competes hard andthinks about where to placethe ball, showing tacticalmaturity,” Willsmore said.

Noah is the son of for-mer West Coast Eaglesplayer Michael Braun.

BEN Popham likes a chal-lenge and for the 18-year-old, juggling his Year 12studies last year while trav-elling to Cairns to achieve aworld swimming rankingin freestyle proved a wor-thy feat.

Popham is a finalist forthe WA Sports Star Awardin the Junior Sports Starcategory.

“I started swimming forphysiotherapy purposeswhen I was seven to helpmy cerebral palsy (CP) butdecided to continue withthe sport and start compet-ing and it’s been an upward

trajectory since,” Popham, who was diagnosed with CPas an infant, said.

The 2011 Telethon childsaid CP had been a chal-lenge when it came toswimming but “it’s justabout working around it”.

“We all have our ownlimitations,” he said.

“I’ve learnt to compen-sate through my upperbody for the lack of propul-sion my legs can create.”

The Marmion residentsaid his biggest swimmingachievement was winningtwo gold medals during hisfinal year of high schoollast year, one with the Aus-tralian 34 point men’s relay

team and in the S8 100m

freestyle.

Popham’s freestyle time

of 59.33 earned him a num-

ber one ranking in the

world at the 2018 Pan Pacs

Para Swimming Champi-

onships in Cairns, but he

finished the year as num-

ber two, narrowly behind

China’s Haijiao Xu.

Popham is set to start

his Bachelor of Commerce

studies at Curtin Universi-

ty this year while working

towards his goal of compet-

ing in the Paralympics.

The WA Sports Star

Award winners will be an-

nounced on February 7.

With the CX-8, if youblock your ears to muffleout the noise of the kids, you may even mistake itfor a medium-sized luxurysedan. It’s comfortable andthe interior is neat, witheverything convenientlyplaced around you.

It’s as if the car hasbeen built around the dri-ver, beginning with thehandbrake, a simpleswitch. I was initially cau-

tious of parking on a hillwithout yanking up a leveror stomping on a foot pedalbut the switch works per-fectly fine!

The keyless ignition, also new for me, makes ahuge difference whenclimbing in with yourarms full.

The key can stay safelyin the pocket so there is nochance of locking it in thecar with the kids.

At just 154cm, I canstruggle in some cars, feel-ing I’m seated either toohigh or too low. Once I’vegot the CX-8’s seat adjust-ed, I discover a whole newworld of functions.

The standout feature isthe Active Driving Dis-play. As a mother of kidswho don’t always get

along, my eyes are oftendarting between the road, the speedo and back seat.

The hologram-like dis-play, cleverly reflected onthe windscreen in the fieldof vision, means I can keepmy eyes on my speed andthe road at the same time.

The auto-folding sidemirrors are another verysubtle bonus that can begreat for parking in tightspots at the local shoppingcentre, and the reversecamera and sensors ensureeven the most hurried re-verse parker doesn’tscratch car park bollardsor shopping trolleys.

From the driver’s seat,the CX-8 has a luxury feel.

The middle row of seatsis spacious and very roomyfor my three, aged 10, eight

and four, the youngest stillin a booster seat.

The CX-8 is a seven-seater SUV; unlike ourfamily seven-seater, thereis actually room for adultsin the third row.

The maker says the tworear seats are suitable forchildren and adults up to170cm for short rides.

I find the three separateclimate zones really conve-nient. Each row has theability to control its owntemperature so while Ihave the aircon pumpingout in the front seat, themiddle and rear occupantscan turn theirs up ordown.

As with most cars thatcater for larger families, the boot space is somewhatsacrificed for the extra two

seats. This may be an issue if

you have a baby that re-quires a larger-style prambut it is big enough for afold-up stroller.

It suits us and, after all,the more boot space I tendto have, the more junk Iend up driving around.

I can fit three large bagsof midweek grocery shop-ping bags and there isroom for as much again.

School bags and my lap-top bag fit with plenty ofroom too, so any extraspace would be wasted onus.

The CX-8’s thrifty use offuel is a huge bonus.

I hadn’t had much expe-rience driving a diesel, oreven a car with i-stop, theMazda tech that cuts the

engine at the traffic lights. The car doesn’t feel as if

it works any harder, thefuel use is minimal and, once you get used to the i-stop feature, you barely no-tice it.

In my week enjoyingthe company of the CX-8, Ido five local trips betweenhome and school, a fewtrips to the shops, and one45-minute trip on the Sun-day and back again.

What started off as a fulltank is just under seven-eighths full by the end ofthe week.

Overall, the CX-8 is agreat family SUV withquite a lush feel.

If only there was a but-ton to mute the kids, itmight even feel as if I wasdriving a luxury car.
