TI-RATANA

As part of this module, we are to visit an orphanage home in a group of 27 of us taking this module. During our time there we gave them activities which requires them to role play various occupations such as, hospital, building and fashion show. As a good will, we also bought some food and supplies for the orphanage home as well as some stationaries for the kids.

We chose Ti-Ratana because one of our group mates had visited the place before for a similar assignment. We had fixed 29th October as the date on which we would visit Ti-Ratana. It is located at Salak South Bahru, Desa Petaling

ACTIVITIES

We had 3 games planned for the children at Ti-Ratana – the hospital, the building and the fashion show. These games are all role-playing games which require the children to interact with each other. All these games have one the sole purpose of showing the kids what the working world might look like.

The hospital game will include roles such as nurses, receptionists and doctors. They would role-play as how a hospital would be operated with the receptionists receiving patients, doctors taking blood pressure and the nurses to aid them.

The building game includes constructing a building or house using precut manila cards and cardboard. Lines are drawn on the paper to identify where the paper would fold. This is to make things easier for the children. This game takes on the role of an Architect as the main focus of the game is creativity.

The fashion show game takes on the role of a clothes designer where the children will work with stacks of newspaper. From the newspaper, they will attempt to form a dress and pick a model among the group to try out their design. This game also focuses on creativity.

MY ROLE

The role I played in this assignment was to help out with building activity under Simon Foo. We had planned to provide the kids with cutouts of manila cards, cardboard and toothpicks and allow them to construct a building based on their creativity with pencils, rulers, scissors and glue. We were however given instructions to help and observe them whenever it comes to using the scissors, toothpick or glue for safety reasons.

The dimensions of the buildings were all measured to their respective sizes before hand to allow the kids to focus on the creative side of constructing. I had helped to cut out the manila cards before hand to their appropriate sizes so that we don’t waste time on the day itself.

As a side role, I was also assigned to bring along a First-aid kit in the case any kids got injured. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the day.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Firstly, a big thank you to Ti-Ratana for allowing us to have this experience to give back to the community and to inspire the kids there. I hope that through this the kids will be more ambitious in the future and willing to sow back to the community despite their current conditions.

I want to thank all my group mates that have put in effort to making this activity a success. Especially the group administrators that went to get the foods for the orphanage; designed the T-shirts we wore on the day itself and even those who handled the money for this activity. This trip the orphanage home would not have been a success without the effort they have put in.

REFLECTION

From this assignment I have learnt to mix around with kids though I have a lot to learn in that regard. I have also continued to learn to work in a group and that communication is important in a group. Looking back, this assignment has been quite fun especially when dealing with the kids.

On a more serious note, I have learnt that there are those who are less fortunate than me. Instead of being selfish, I should learn to think more about others and blessing them whenever possible. Though it’s hard to organize for an activity like this, the smiles of the kids makes it is all worth it.
