As described in NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts (NOT-OD-08-033), as of April 7, 2008, applicable articles arising from NIH funds must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. As of May 25, 2008, NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports must include the PMC reference number when citing an article that falls under the policy. This policy includes applications submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due dates.” (Source: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-057.html) The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is developing tools to assist in complying. E-mail Jan Nimmo with questions.

Last Call for Time and Effort Certifications for research activities in the Calendar Years 2006 and 2007 were sent to Baylor researchers the week of March 18th. The Office of Sponsored Programs asks researchers to return the reviewed and signed ceritfications. E-mail Lisa McKethan with questions or call x8905 if changes are needed.

The National Science Foundation recently awarded $145,000 grant allows the Engaged Learning Groups (ELG) on “Energy and Society: The Costs and Benefits of an Energy Dependent Society” to take a giant step forward. Led by Dr. Ian Gravagne, assistant professor electrical and computer engineering and by Dr. Kenneth Van Treuren, professor of mechanical engineering, the group explores different topics related to energy. For more information about how to develop your own ELG, visit http://www.baylor.edu/qep/index.php?id=51545.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) and CASPER welcomes the newly hired Asst. Director for Educational Research and Outreach Cynthia (Cyndi) Hernandez. Dr. Hernandez’s main focus is on designing innovative cross curricular science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) modules; delivering professional development for teachers; and creating partnerships among businesses, institutions of higher education, and school districts as well as providing mentoring opportunities for students to work side by side with scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and mathematicians. Contact her by e-mail [email protected] or phone x1618.

Another welcome addition to the OVPR staff is Kristy Boyd, adminis-trative associate to the Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Achievement (URSA) initiative. Kristy will provide staff support to OVPR, the URSA faculty steering committee, URSA planning committees, and undergraduate students under current and future programs, including the website, Scholars Day, the small grants program, the writing competition and other programs to enhance undergraduate participation in research. BAYLOR RESOURCES FOR FINDING FUNDING

Proposal TipNIH Online:

The Insider’s Guide to Peer Review for

ApplicantsWhen reviewing applications, reviewers often wish they could have grabbed the applicants before submission and told them what they needed to know about writing a grant. The quality of science proposed would increase, and the reviewer would be better able to evaluate it.

Of course, having such contact with an applicant would violate conflict-of-interest laws. NIH’s Center for Scientific Review (CSR) however has done the next best thing: asked a group of current and retired study section chairs to give their advice for applicants. The group responded with great enthusiasm, hitting many of the same notes.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Research aids faculty members from all academic units in identifying, obtaining and managing the funding needed to support their research and scholarship. The following resources are available to Baylor University researchers.

Community of Science, Inc. (COS) is the leading Internet site for the global research community and the funding resource of choice for Baylor University research and scholarship pursuits. COS services include: COS Expertise, the database of detailed, first person profiles research professionals; and COS Funding Opportunities, the largest source of grant information on the Web; among others.

SPINPlus from InfoEd International is comprised of three product modules, including a database of funding opportunities (SPIN), a database of investigator profiles (GENIUS), and a matching alert service (SMARTS). Please contact Jan Nimmo for SPIN Access Information at x1438.

Coming Soon to Baylor: Updated weekly, the Foundation Directory Online provides the most comprehensive and accurate information on U.S. non-profit grantmakers and their funding activities.

Grants.gov is a central storehouse for information on over 1,000 federal grant programs and provides access to approximately $400 billion in annual awards. http://www.grants.gov/ For more resources, visit:http://www.baylor.edu/research/vpr/index.php?id=16768.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

RESEARCH TRACKS April 2008 Page 4

An important procedural change with electronic submission of grant applications is that all electronic grant applications must be submitted in response to a Funding Opportunity Announcement. NIH has developed parent announcements for use by applicants who wish to submit what were formerly termed investigator-initiated or ‘unsolicited’ applications.
