Como West Public SchoolStudent Wellbeing and Discipline Policy

All students at Como West Public School are supported in a caring and welcoming environment. School programs and practices reflect our shared beliefs and values.

Students are provided with high quality education so that they may learn to the best of their ability and become self-disciplined, tolerant and contributing members of the school and community.

Statement of Purpose

Our Student Wellbeing and Discipline Policy outlines how Como West Public School meets the personal, social and learning needs of students.

It is developed in conjunction with, and is supported by the following Departmental documents:

This policy is designed to help students achieve the school’s expectations of being safe, respectful and successful learners.

Core Rules of NSW Government Schools

In alignment with the core rules of NSW government schools all students are expected to:

attend every school day, unless they are legally excused, and be in class on time and prepared to learn maintain a neat appearance, including adhering to the requirements of the school’s uniform or dress

code policy behave safely and and responsibly, including when travelling to and from school show respect at all times to school staff and community members by following class rules, speaking

courteously and cooperating with instructions and learning activities treat one another with dignity and respect care for property belonging to themselves, the school and others resolve conflict respectfully, calmly and fairly not bully, harass, intimidate or discriminate against anyone in our school strive for the highest standards of learning.

Anti-bullying Plan

Behaviour that infringes on the safety of others, such as harassment, bullying and illegal or anti-social behaviour of any kind, will not be tolerated.

The school has a separate Anti-bullying plan. Como West Public School will not tolerate verbal, physical, emotional, social, psychological and cyber bullying.

Core Values

We have developed core values for student behaviour to establish consistent expectations. Our core values are integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, and care.

Como West Public School promotes optimum learning through our core values, which are in alignment with the NSW Department of Education.

These values were formed after community consultation with input from students, staff and parents.

I will show INTEGRITY by:

being honest and reliable making good choices and decisions being consistent in my actions.

I will show EXCELLENCE by:

striving to achieve my personal best representing my school with pride acknowledging the achievements of others.

I will show RESPECT by:

using good manners being polite and considerate listening to the point of view of others.

I will show RESPONSIBILITY by:

following the school rules taking charge of my own behaviour contributing positively to the school and the community.

I will show CARE by:

caring for myself caring for others caring for the environment.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)Positive Behaviour for Learning was implemented to establish consistent behaviour expectations and the consistent management of behaviour. There are behaviour expectations for all areas within the school.

Students are to be safe, respectful and successful learners.

Student expectations are displayed and are explicitly taught so that students, staff and parents are using a common language. These expectations have their foundation in our school values.

See Appendix 1 - Como West Public School Expectation Matrix.

School Uniform Expectations

Wearing a uniform shows unity and respect for the school. At Como West Public School, all students are expected to wear a uniform at all times. If a student does not wear a school hat, he or she must remain in a designated shade area. If a student is unable to wear any article of the school uniform due to unforeseen circumstances, a note must be written to the Principal or Class Teacher explaining the reason. Excessive jewellery is not a part of our school uniform.

Black shoes are compulsory. Students may wear non-black joggers on sports days only.

All clothing should be clearly marked with the owner’s name, including hats, bags, jackets and shoes.

Representational Expectations – Code of Conduct for Sport

Representing Como West Public School in organised or competitive sport is an honour and a privilege. Students are expected to behave appropriately at all times to be permitted to be a part of any group leaving the school. This includes PSSA and while representing our school at any sporting event. Parents and students are expected to abide by a code of conduct handed to each student prior to participating in PSSA. A breach of the code of conduct is a serious issue and will result in consequences which may include the student not being permitted to be a part of any school team.

Personal Property and Expectations regarding Mobile Phones and Other Electronic Devices

Como West Public School follows the Department’s Policy on Bringing Your Own Devices (BYOD). Personal property (other than stationery) such as electronic devices is considered unnecessary unless being used explicitly for directed learning activities. Electronic devices should not disrupt student learning. Electronic devices and mobile phones may NOT be used by students at ANY TIME where students are under the care of teaching staff unless directed to do so by a staff member.

The use of electronic devices and mobile phones includes: phone calls text or picture messaging playing games internet access audio recording video recording taking photographs

bluetooth, wireless or data transfer sharing photographs, audio or video files downloading multimedia content (ringtones, games etc.)

It is the responsibility of the student to ensure the safety of his/her electronic device or mobile phone. Mobile phones are required to be kept at the office until the conclusion of the school day.

Students must comply with the school’s ICT Agreement incorporating BYOD. Inappropriate use of the internet either during school times or out of school times may result in restricted use of technology as a learning tool and/or further sanctions or consequences including referral to the police.

The school accepts NO RESPONSIBILITY for any loss or damage to any electronic devices brought to school by a student.

Managing Inappropriate BehaviourGood discipline and high expectations optimises and supports student learning and is based on a fair and consistent approach to behaviour management.

Strategies to promote student wellbeing, consistent with the Departmental guidelines are:

Effective Learning and Teaching

Students will be encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and behaviour. Teaching and learning programs will cater for the individual learning needs of students and be

supported by the Learning and Support Team. Opportunities will be given to parents and carers to discuss learning programs, student behaviour and

progress.

Positive Climate and Good Discipline

The wellbeing, safety and health of students and other community members as well as principles of equity and justice will be priorities in all school policies, programs and practices.

The school’s expectations provide clear guidelines of behaviour which are known by staff, students and parents.

The school is a disciplined, ordered and cohesive community where individuals take responsibility for their actions and work together.

The school will be an inclusive environment which affirms diversity and respects difference.

Community Participation

Parents are acknowledged as partners in their child’s education. Parents and carers share a commitment to supporting students in taking responsibility for their actions

and developing respectful relationships.

Responsibilities

The Principal ensures: a commitment to student wellbeing underpins all of the policies and activities of the school staff, parents and students are assisted to develop strategies for addressing student wellbeing and

discipline needs with aim of supporting the development of caring, respectful future citizens.

Teaching and Support Staff: contribute to the provision of a caring, well managed, safe environment for all students, staff and

parents create an environment where students feel happy and secure implement strategies to promote effective learning for individual students implement effective practices that promote good discipline and effective learning follow the school policy guidelines for dealing with inappropriate behaviour recognise and promote student achievement welcome parents to the school and inform them of the progress and wellbeing of their children.

The Students: know and follow the school’s expectations for being a safe, respectful learner and successful learner participate actively in their learning
