Complete Syllabus Updated: 27Dec2016 2pm V261 is designed to teach students a wide variety of skills surrounding applications in the Microsoft product line, in relation to Information Technology in the field of Public Affairs and Environmental Science. In groups, students will formulate a project plan over the first 15 weeks to answer a “Request For Proposal” from the instructor, simulating a realworld project planning scenario. Applications will include Microsoft Word, PointPoint, Excel, Access, and other business software. Concepts will include project proposals, presentations, website design, budget planning, IT infrastructures, IT policies, project planning, and group collaboration. You will be assessed based on several group projects (which require a few individual assignments along the way) culminating in a final group website and proposal packet, weekly quizzes which reflect any reading materials, two noncumulative exams, and overall participation. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions during or after class. I encourage and welcome any and all inquiries and discussions – we (including me) can all learn from these interactions. All materials, quizzes, assignments, and links, as well as this syllabus, are in Canvas. Any announcements, links from class, or optional reading materials will also be posted to Canvas. Course Policies

Assignments and Deliverables

Assignments, Exams, Quizzes, and all other Deliverables are mapped out in each module of this course. Typically, quizzes are due at thebeginning of the week or module. Assignments will typically be given 1­2 weeks for completion. Exams will be completely open note and willhave a preparation list or discussion the session beforehand.

All deliverables are expected to be handed in via Canvas Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, or with other instructions. Exams are done asCanvas Quizzes as well.

Participation and attendance are recorded through 1) direct attendance and 2) discussions. I will look for quality posts and replies so that we areall helping each other grow in this class.

Academic Integrity

One of the primary foundations of the university is respect of intellectual property. We expect you to complete your work by yourself unless youare explicitly told that you may collaborate with others on a given project. If you do collaborate with others, you are expected to acknowledge, inwriting, the person or persons who helped you. Failure to do so is a breach of respect of intellectual property. We consider the following to beunacceptable: turning in someone else's work as your own; allowing someone to turn in your work as his/her own; copying work during an

examination. A course grade of F will be recorded for any student who, in the instructor's view, has committed an act of academic dishonesty.Note that a grade of F given for reasons of academic dishonesty cannot be removed either through the F/FX policy or declaration of academicbankruptcy. SPEA's academic integrity policy coincides with the Code of Student Ethics as printed in the schedule of classes. Please read itcarefully.

Lecture Materials

Any crucial lecture materials will be posted to Canvas first thing each week or module. If a lecture contains materials required for a quiz or exam,I will attempt to post them to Canvas sooner. However, it is critical that you keep up with the modules and schedule.

Discussions and In‐Class Assignments

This class contains several discussions as well as a couple in­class assignments. You MUST be present in class to get attendance for the dayAND to receive credit for the discussions or in­class assignments. Not being in class on those days will result in a zero for any work describedherein.

Group Grading

My class is designed with a lot of group work, and therefore being present and engaged with your group is critical. If you are not participating orcontributing with your group, I reserve the right to remove points from the Group Feedback items or ANY group assignment. Overwhelmingnegative feedback could result in a loss of points (all or some) on any of these items.

If you are having difficulties with your group, or a particular group member, PLEASE come to me sooner rather than later!

Late assignments

All deliverables will be accepted late with a 50% assignment mark­down. The late due date should be within a week, or decided upon by theinstructor – all within reason. We cannot hold back you or the class so that assignments can be handed in late. Further, group assignments relyupon accumulated individual assignments.

Missed Class, Assignments, or Exams

Make­ups for quizzes, essays, or assignments may be arranged in advance upon request. This includes missed attendance or tardiness ­ youMUST notify me in advance. IU’s one­week policy for handing in missed work or rescheduling exams due to illness or family troubles will befollowed in this class. The second (final) exam date/time CANNOT be changed.

Not everything is in the book or on Canvas – web searching can be your friend. Do your own work, but know that you can help each other.Modules and assignments will be clear on how much you can work together.

Holidays, medical emergencies, and weather days may cause me to delay deadlines and allow some extensions. But in general, the scheduleset out at the beginning of the class will stick.

Grade of Incomplete, Late Join

I do not allow Incomplete’s in this class, nor do I allow late joins past week 2. The group­based structure of this class does not easily allow foreither of these actions.
