In 1999, Todd Pedersen saw an opportunity in the security solutions market to sell a high-quality product using a personal approach. Now, with more than 13 years of experience, the company has grown to service more than 800,000 installed systems across the United States and Canada and retains over 7,000 employees.

APX Alarm grew steadily through the mid-2000s; however, 2006 marked a breakthrough year for the growing company. APX expanded to Canada by sending its geographically focused teams of sales representatives and installers to residents of Toronto, Ontario. The company’s customer base grew by 825% between 2005 and 2010.

Then, in 2009, in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, Goldman Sachs and APX completed a credit facility agreement worth $440 million. In conjunction with the rebrand, Vivint also introduced lighting and small appliance controls, automatic door locks, and video surveillance.

In June 2011, Consumers Digest recognized the Vivint Home Automation and Advanced Security packages with “Best Buy” ratings for their exceptional value in today’s competitive marketplace. Vivint also received the 2011 Dealer of the Year award from SDM Magazine.

In February of 2012, a 20-bank lending group led by Goldman Sachs expanded Vivint’s financing to more than $760 million. about vivint

Incorporated in 1999, Vivint (formerly APEX Alarm and APX Alarm Security Systems) is now one of the largest home automation companies in North America, with more than 800,000 customers and 7,000 employees. The company is headquartered in Provo, Utah, and operates two monitoring stations and numerous sales and services offices throughout the United States and Canada. Vivint is dedicated to enhancing security, increasing energy efficiency, and providing easy-to-use, affordable home automation for its customers.

Between 1999 and 2005, the company experienced healthy growth marketing third-party security products and services. In 2006, a major investment by Goldman Sachs enabled it to evolve into a full-service home security firm. Between 2005 and 2010, the company quickly became one of the largest and fastest-growing residential security companies in North America.

In those five years, the company’s customer base grew by 825%. Even during the difficult economic period between 2009 and 2010, the company experienced a 34% increase in its customer base.

Today, Vivint reports more than $42 million in recurring monthly revenue (RMR) each month. This number includes only monthly customer service fees and not additional revenue derived from installation fees.

Vivint’s expansion into home automation is a result of several strategic moves by the company that laid the groundwork for a successful transition into a new market. Price has always been a major barrier for the average consumer. Thanks to a credit facility agreement with Goldman Sachs, the company can finance equipment costs and pass the savings along to customers in the form of low installation costs and monthly monitoring fees.

The company also began installing its central panel home automation platform for all new customers in 2010. The easy-to-use LCD touchscreen panel can manage both home security and automation features and gives customers remote control access via the Internet, smartphones, and tablet devices.

In the last half of 2010, the company tested its own technology and customer interest in home automation by introducing energy management features. In less than six months, more than 15,000 customers added these capabilities to their systems.

In February 2011, the company launched a suite of home automation products and services and changed its name to Vivint to reflect this new focus and direction.

Vivint offers simple, affordable home automation solutions for customers. Products include motion detectors, medical pendants, door and window sensors, smoke alarms, thermostats, automatic door locks, video surveillance, and lighting and small appliance controls. Vivint’s home automation system works with customers’ existing technology and enhances security, ensures safety, and increases energy efficiency—all at an affordable price. In a side-by-side comparison with a major competitor, Vivint’s base home automation package provides comparable features and benefits for a fraction of the cost.

Excellence in Customer Service

Continued Expansion

about vivint (continued)

Vivint delivers the finest customer service in the industry by keeping all customer interactions in-house. From sales to installation and service, all customer service functions are performed by Vivint employees—never by third-party call centers or vendors. As a result, Vivint enjoys some of the highest customer-retention rates in the industry. The company has also garnered prestigious customer service awards, including a Consumers Digest “Best Buy” rating for its Home Automation and Advanced Security packages and inclusion on the International Customer Management Institute’s “Top 50 Call Centers for Customer Service” list. Part of our dedication to outstanding customer service is providing the products and support when and where our customers need them.

We don’t come to a community and leave. We have a nationwide force of technicians who can service more than 95% of North America in 24 hours. This means we’ll always be there for our customers when their systems need to be maintained or upgraded. Then in February of 2012, a 20-bank lending group led by Goldman Sachs expanded Vivint’s financing to more than $760 million. This additional support has allowed the company to continue to develop new customer growth, strategies, and product lines. In September 2012, Vivint took the next step toward accelerated growth and entered into an agreement with The Blackstone Group. The company acquired Vivint for in excess of $2 billion, creating a partnership that will allow Vivint to accelerate the development of new services and enter new markets. By December of the same year, PCWorld, one of the top names in tech trends, named Vivint one of its 100 best products of 2012.

During 2013, Vivint received several prestigious recognitions. In February Vivint founder and CEO Todd Pedersen was named 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year by the Mountain West Capital Network, a Utah business networking organization. That same month Vivint ranked number 46 on Forbes’ annual ranking of America’s Most Promising Companies, recognizing the company as one of the top privately held, high-growth companies with a bright future. In March, Vivint won the 2013 People’s Choice Stevie Awards for favorite customer service based on 211,000 online votes.

That summer, Vivint formed a partnership with Garbett Homes to build the first affordable, climate 5 net-zero “smart home” to achieve a HERS 0 rating—dubbed the “Zero Home.” Located in Herriman, Utah, this 100 percent sustainable home marks a huge accomplishment for the industry of sustainble living. In Octber 2013, Vivint also received an Inc. Hire Award from Inc. Magazine, who named the company the second largest job creator in the U.S. for 2013.

a personalized approach

ARM is an authorized dealer of Vivint. It employs representatives to help sell our products and gain new customers.

ARM is an independent sales force that has years of experience in direct-to-home marketing. Because ARM is a separate entity from Vivint, any company can enlist ARM to generate sales and new customers.

Although we have other methods of acquiring customers, summer sales is our primary source of new accounts. We believe that using a direct and personal sales approach is a valuable resource because it allows us to create systems personalized for each customer’s unique needs.

Summer sales is a personalized approach that allows us to connect with our customers face to face. Representatives can answer customers’ questions and tailor a system to any residence.

Yes. We have a national inside sales department at our Provo headquarters that follows up on referrals throughout the country. We also have a traditional marketing department that generates customers year-round.

Yes. All summer sales reps must obtain a license before they can legally knock doors. We do not allow representatives to knock doors or represent our company without a license.

Every customer is required to take our pre-installation survey before the purchase is finalized and equipment is installed. During this survey, they must acknowledge that they understand the terms and length of the contract, our cancellation policy, and that Vivint is not affiliated with any other company. We also conduct a post-installation survey to ensure customers are satisfied with their new system. We take these measures to protect both our customers and our representatives.

All of our reps wear the Vivint and ARM certified uniform and carry their license, pre-sales surveys, official contracts, and an ID number. To verify one of our reps, go to vivint.com/tools/verify and type in the representative’s ID number and your location or call 801.765.5936.

The Vivint Gives Back philanthropy program was created to alleviate hardship and restore hope for families in need. This program provides opportunities for the employees and executives of Vivint to contribute time, money, and volunteer hours to their communities. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Vivint Gives Back has participated in many diverse service activities—everything from cleaning up after Hurricane Ike to adopting a local elementary school—for more than 200 unique organizations. This program has succeeded in perpetuating an attitude of giving and creating a culture of service at Vivint that has brought the company, coworkers, and communities closer together.

$6 million90,000 service hours

The Gives Back Project: In 2011, Vivint fans voted for their favorite charities and decided where Vivint’s donations would go. We gave away $1.2 million dollars to 84 different charities. Participation in the project exploded with 1,661,611 votes and endorsements and 2,382 charity nominations.

2012 Year of Service: Throughout 2012, Vivint hosted a year-long effort to encourage Vivint employees to make a difference by serving their communities. By the end of the year, 2,642 volunteers had donated 8,415 man hours to 115 different service projects in their local areas. Several groups of volunteers also used their own money to fly to Tijuana, Guatemala, and Ghana to build water-filtration systems, small houses, an orphanage, and a hospital for the villagers.

Feed My Starving Children:In summer of 2013 at our corporate headquarters, 850 volunteers supported the Feed My Starving Children charity organization by assembling meals for children in third world countries. We spent a total of 1,700 hours working with FMSC and made enough meals to feed 636 hungry children for an entire year.

Sub for Santa: In December 2013, Vivint employees donated their money and time to share Christmas with 3,000 kids around the U.S. and Canada. They donated money, bought the presents, and delivered them in person. All together, we raised more than $222,000, gathered 2,000 volunteers, and spent 5,000 hours spreading Christmas cheer.

Gives Back 2013: In 2013 alone, we served 50,000 hours (that’s double our hours in 2012) and raised $3 million from employees and the Vivint match. All of that service took place in 6 different countries and contributed to 325 projects in communities throughout North America.

Todd Pedersen is the CEO and founder of Vivint Inc., the largest home automation services provider in North America. Todd co-founded Vivint because he saw an opportunity to sell high-quality products using a personal approach.

In the summer of 1992, Todd hired 10 friends to sell pest control out of a single-wide trailer. By the end of the year, his team had expanded to 80 people. In 1999, his direct-to-home sales approach led him to launch APX Alarm, which later become Vivint. Under his leadership, Vivint has evolved from a groundbreaking idea into one of the fastest-growing home technology companies, now with more than 800,000 customers and 7,000 employees.

Vivint has grown steadily every year since its inception, and recently the company hit the landmark of $30 million RMR, a goal that only two other companies in the industry have achieved. This growth has allowed Vivint to consistently climb the rankings of the SDM Top 100 list of largest residential security installation and monitoring organizations. Vivint now ranks number 2 on SDM’s list and number 46 on Forbes’ list of America’s Most Promising Companies. Thanks to Todd’s vision and leadership, Vivint has grown exponentially and in 2012 was acquired by the Blackstone Group for more than $2 billion. The acquisition marked the largest tech buyout in Utah history.

Todd continued his tradition of shaking up stale markets with the launch of Vivint Solar. Using the power purchase agreement (PPA), Vivint Solar offers customers a unique way to afford a traditionally expensive technology. Since its inception in 2011, Vivint Solar has become the second largest residential solar power provider in the United States.

As a result of his efforts in the business world and in the community, Todd was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 in the services category for the Utah Region. The award recog-nizes “outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses.” He was also named Utah’s Entrepreneur of the Year by Mountain West Capital Network and voted one of Utah’s 10 Coolest Entrepreneurs of 2013 by Utah Valley BusinessQ.

press releasevivint™ named to forbes’ list of america’s 100 most promising companies

Vivint™, the largest home automation services company in North America, today announced it has been listed at No. 46 on Forbes annual ranking of America’s Most Promising Companies. The list includes of one hundred privately held, high-growth companies with bright futures. This marks the first year that Vivint has been named to the exclusive list.

Vivint’s inclusion on Forbes’ list comes after a banner year for the company, in which it crossed the threshold of $30 million in recurring monthly revenue—one of only three companies in its industry to achieve this milestone. Since 2007, the company has experienced a growth rate of 400 percent. Acquired in 2012 for more than $2 billion by Blackstone, Vivint was selected to the Forbes list for its growth (in both sales and hiring), the quality of its management team and its investors, product strength, margins, market size, and key strategic partnerships.

“This honor is a shared achievement of the entire Vivint team,” said Todd Pedersen, CEO of Vivint. “We are committed to providing our customers with a smarter way to live and connecting them with the aspects of their lives that matter most—their homes, families, health, and businesses. We will continue to execute and build upon this overarching vision.”

Vivint’s home technology solutions improve customers’ lives through home automation, security, and energy management. The company also saves customers money through Vivint Solar, which has become one of the fastest growing solar companies in the United States through effective use of the power purchase agreement (PPA) model.

One metric never says it all. For the Most Promising list, Forbes strove for a holistic gauge of young, privately held companies, trying to pin down their trajectories by looking at a slew of variables. Over the course of six months, Forbes reviewed thousands of applications. Forbes turned to CB Insights, a Manhattan-based data research firm that specializes in assessing private companies, to refine the search. Their MOSAIC software scans 45,000 sources to measure a company’s health. A new distribution deal, for example, marks a positive signal, while the loss of an executive is a negative. MOSAIC gathers those myriad signals into a final score that Forbes uses as an initial guide in producing the list. After verifying sales numbers, speaking with each company and debating their merits and blemishes, Forbes produces a final ranking.

press releasevivint and garbett homes unveil first affordable net zero “smart home” in a climate 5 environment

Vivint™ and Garbett Homes today announce the first affordable, climate 5 net-zero “smart home” to achieve a HERS 0 rating. Located in Herriman, Utah, this non-custom, self-sufficient, solar-powered home, called The Zero Home, is one of the first production homes in the United State that can gen-erate as much energy as it consumes.

Equipped with Vivint’s smart home technology and Vivint Solar‘s energy array, this Energy Star certi-fied Zero Home will generate its own energy, offsetting most or all of the homeowners’ utility bills. Additionally, the average utility bill for residents in the same neighborhood as The Zero Home is about $300 per month.

Net-zero homes are so energy efficient, most or all electricity needs can be met with renewable en-ergy systems. This target has been difficult to achieve in the Salt Lake area’s cold, dry climate, which according to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) climate zone map corresponds to Climate Zone 5.

Net-zero, climate 5 homes have been built in the past, but have only reached a HERS rating of 5 and could not be reproduced at an affordable price point. The Zero Home is the first to reach the critical 0 rating. Administered by the Residential Energy Services Network, the HERS Index is the industry standard for measuring a home’s energy efficiency; the lower the rating, the more self-sufficient the home.

The Zero Home also qualifies for DOE Challenge Home designation, which recognizes home build-ers for their leadership constructing zero-energy ready homes that are both energy efficient and in-clude high-end finishes, improved indoor air quality, and greater durability. By meeting the program criteria, DOE Challenge Homes are at least 40–50% more energy efficient than a typical new home.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see the Utah building community join as a leader in green home-building,” says Sam Rashkin, Chief Architect of the Building Technologies Office at the U.S. Department of En-ergy. “The collaboration between Vivint and Garbett, which allows the consumer to purchase a truly environmentally friendly home, is a huge milestone—both for Utah and the country.”

The Zero Home will also be equipped with a Vivint home automation and energy management sys-tem that incorporates the latest proprietary technology from the Vivint Innovation Center, including Vivint Wireless Internet and a new touchscreen panel that features energy analytics. Additional home automation features include: automated door locks, a smart-thermostat, small appliance and lighting control, video surveillance and an enhanced security system featuring “Vivint Live,” which provides two-way communication with emergency dispatch professionals in times of distress.

“This home is the perfect intersection of innovative and attainable technology,” said Todd Peder-sen, CEO of Vivint. “It embodies Vivint’s mission to bring simple, affordable home technology and solar power to the masses, empowering them to live smarter while combating rising energy costs. We have been incredibly successful in reaching these objectives through our relationship with the Department of Energy and partnership with Garbett Homes.”

Slated to be unveiled at the Salt Lake Parade of Homes from August 2–17, 2013, The Zero Home is priced in-line with other homes in the area based on the price per square foot. Home buyers can purchase a net zero home beginning at $350,000. The Zero Home is a single-family home that will

feature five bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms and a four-car garage, including a charging station for an electric vehicle.

“This is a watershed project for green building in Utah and across the country,” said Bryson Garbett of Garbett Homes. “Every family deserves energy savings and greater energy independence. With the part-nership between two like-minded companies, we want to show that smart homes no longer have to come custom built, with multi-million dollar price tags.”

At the Parade of Homes, patrons will be able to tour the home, including the Green Learning Center. The Green Learning Center is a deconstructed section of the home that showcases Garbett Homes’ energy-saving features, including spray foam and blown-in insulation, low-E windows, compact fluorescent light-ing, super high-efficiency HVAC systems, a HEPA air filtration system, solar water heating, dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets. Vivint will add to the experience by showcasing a new prototype of its real-time en-ergy analytics technology, which will decrease the energy expenditure for homeowners by allowing them to monitor and adjust the home’s energy usage.
