About us

We facilitate change in civil society to succeed in a disruptive environment.

The direct impact group is an international consulting firm established in 2014 that specialises in working with organisations that engage in the development of the civil society sector.

Our interventions are designed to get to the heart of the issue and deliver clean, simple solutions. Simple solutions, because in a dynamic world where skill sets vary considerably only simplicity will get real and sustainable results.

We are committed to results that make a direct impact.

In a situation where a false start or a long learning curve in the execution of your strategy can determine success or failure, we ensure quick and sustainable results.

Our experienced team members have track records in the leadership of Civil Society Organisations and NGOs. They know from first hand experience what it means to turn strategic ideas into transformative results in advocacy, human rights and service delivery. Our consultants combine experience in the business sector with a track record of success at executive level for International Civil Society Organisations.

The direct impact group has a network in Europe, Australasia, India, South East Asia, North America, East Africa, and the Middle East.

Our approach is simple, effective and field-tested.

Change itself is Changing

Change has always happened. But over recent years change itself has changed. It has become faster, more fun-damental and more surprising. When these three elements come together, we experience disruption.

These examples of change that impact international and national Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in-clude planetary, political, technological and social disruptions, which dramatically change the role of CSOs as intermediaries:

• Impact of Climate Change

• Innovative Technology

• Shrinking Space for Civil Society

• Shift in Donor Expectations

• Higher Emphasis on Accountability

• Economic Shifts

• Security Issues

• Hyper Transparency

• Need for new Business Models

• Social Media

Some of these changes may already impact your work today, others may not impact in the immediate future. The disruptions may not affect all international CSOs equally, but they will occur. To date, most civil society organisations are not prepared to deal effectively with disruption.

We support you by facilitating change in times of disruption.

Our ApproachWe look at your organisation as a system and not as a conglomerate of departments or functions to avoid the risk of focusing only on individual aspects of your work (Governance, Administration, Finances, Fundraising, Programme etc.).

Instead, we analyse the interdependencies across the entire organisation and potential synergies with the organisational structure that is already in place. We recommend we co-create together with your team a system view to get a holistic overview on actual issues as the basis for potential solutions. In a disruptive environment it is crucial to avoid blind spots.

Our field tested model, 360o impact™, is based on a system view and provides a comprehensive check list for every relevant segment of your work. As facilitators, we guide you through a process that includes all relevant aspects of your business. 360o impact™ is an assessment tool used to ask the right questions for your specific situation. The objective is to keep the thinking simple, structured, and to look at your issues from different perspectives to ensure that the result of your workforce analysis is supporting your strategy, but also grounded in today’s reality, considering all major implications across your departments.

Core Value Facilitation: We understand it is not about us

What is a Facilitation?Facilitation can be defined as “to ease a process". A facilitator plans, guides and documents the work of your team to ensure that the objectives are met effectively, with full participation, clear thinking, and buy-in from everyone who is involved. In many situations, and particularly in complex discussions, or those where people have different functions, interests and views, good facilitation makes the difference between success and failure. Our facilitators have a wide range of skills and tools, from team management, problem solving and decision making, to project planning and communications. We create the working space which is required for success and ensure that stakeholders become participants.

External Facilitation with Civil Society ExperienceTo facilitate a group process effectively, it is essential that the facilitator takes a neutral stance. It is important to step back from content and any personal views. Only in this way is space for effective collaboration created, which allows the team members to fully own the developed solution. Our job is to focus on the process. By “process" we mean the approach used to manage discussions, get the best from all participants, and bring the group work on measurable results. However, our experience is that a facilitator who understands the thinking, culture, and mindset of the client’s sector, can more effectively get a team productive.

strategy formulation

Strategy is the framework of choices that determine the nature and direction of your organisation, cooperation or movement. To make these important decisions, you need quality information about internal and external trends, different perspectives and expectations, as well as a comprehensive process leading your strategy formulation team through key steps.

Facilitation We guide your team through the strategy formulation process to ensure that the strategy is developed effectively, with full participation, clear thinking, and considering different perspectives. In many situations, especially when people come together with different functions, cultures and views, good facilitation makes the difference between success and failure. Our facilitators have a wide range of tools, from Balanced Scorecard, Theory of Change, Blue Ocean and others, allowing you to choose those tools, which add highest value. We create the working space required for success and ensure that stakeholders become owners of your strategy.

Strategy Health Check We review your actual strategy against criteria which test the strategies’ solidity on decision parameters and assumptions. Is your strategy based on sound assumptions about developments and trends in your business environment, or does your actual strategy have blind spots regarding disruptive changes in the environment? How can you ensure that your strategy inspires your employees, but beyond this also serves across the organisation as a practical guide for priority setting in daily operations? Well, the first step is to review of the strategy. Do your strategy health check!

Organisational Culture

“The world is changing and ICSOs will need to change too, which requires adapting their organisational cultures to become more responsive to new developments. If your organisational culture resists rather than embraces change, any strategy to navigate disruption will misfire.“

Burkard Gnärig, CEO of the International Civil Society Centre

strategy implementation

Strategy implementation is THE hot topic for Chief Executives in civil society. Looking at the results, this conclusion comes as no surprise: It’s estimated that more than 60% of strategies are not successfully implemented. Over the years we have fine-tuned and field tested a portfolio of services to support you on the transformation of your strategy into blockbuster results.

13

Implementation Planning We facilitate the development of your realistic and comprehensive strategy execution plan.

Our team supports the set up of a project g o v e r n a n c e , t h a t e s t a b l i s h e s a performance system, cul ture and structure needed for a successful strategy implementation.

Communication strategies ensure that the hearts and minds of your stakeholders buy into your vision.

Your strategy becomes a rally cry across the organisation!

Inclusive Development In any marginalised community the most marginalised person tends to be a girl child with disability.

Children are often relied upon to care for family members with a disability with many having to drop out of school.

How can your organisation ensure the inclusion of persons with disability in your programme?

Benefit from decades of experience on inclusive development.

Evaluation We have broad experience in analysing programs and services, and evaluating results, and can assist you with:

• External evaluation for grant funded projects

• Stakeholder perception development

• Formative and summative evaluation

• Data collection and analysis

• Strategy execution

How can we get there? How can we change?

Civil Society Organisations have a particular interest in demonstrating their accountability and transparency in view of the responsibilities towards program beneficiaries, donors, staff and the general public. Short comings in the area of accountability can easily damage the trust in the brand. Our accountability health check allows you to assess your level of maturity in all aspects of accountability.

Accountability Health Check Comprehensive assessment of accountability in all aspects of governance, management and operations, identifying key areas for further development. With this accountability audit we benchmark policies and standards within the sector and check the implementation of standards in the daily operation. We address programme effectiveness, advocacy, operational efficiency, finances, transparency, governance, HR and the environment.

Accountability Development We facilitate the development of an accountability programme addressing the results of the assessment. Our root cause analysis ensures that the right actions are taken in a realistic and planned manner which is digestible for the organisation. We monitor and certify tenable results. Establishment of a performance system, culture and structure will support the organisation’s accountability.

We support you becoming smarter every day by focusing on establishing operational improvements, insight into how to lower cost structures, reduce waste and improve organisational efficiency.

In an increasingly challenging environment, the challenge is to work smarter and more efficiently.

15

operational improvement

Resource Optimisation As operations of civil society organisations become increasingly globalised and supply chains grow more complex, organisations must become more cost efficient and effective at delivering what their beneficiaries need and donors require. Often these systems, processes and procedures have been developed historically over decades, but do they “make your boat go faster“?

We facilitate a systematic analysis of processes and systems, embracing collaboration, pursuing integration, and enhancing capabilities — while understanding and respecting the mindset of the civil society.

Management Services We provide management services, which allow your organisation to reduce costs by outsourcing service functions. With our agile governance model and efficient local structures we can offer classical support functions for civil society organisations such as administration, monitoring or reporting. Our attractive rates help you to save funds and to spend them where they belong: your mandate work.

Do you need time bound management support? We provide highly qualified Interim Managers to private and public customers in cases of urgent, temporary or a special need for management resources.

How can we work smarter? How can we stay agile?
