ArcGIS GeoTables GeoTables allow for a dynamic view of the GIS hosted information. The data maintained in the current scenario, the current timestep and the unit definition of the GeoTable is directly managed by ArcMap. Any columns added to an element GeoTable is automatically added to the ArcGIS Attribute Tables and is synchronized with the attribute tables. This means that columns, data and formats are shared between them.

Using GeoTables, you can: 1. Apply ArcMap symbology definitions to map elements

based on Bentley WaterGEMS & SewerGEMS v8 XM Edition data

Demand Assignments LoadBuilder simplifies and expedites the process of assigning loading data to your model, using a variety of source data types:

Billing Meter Aggregation—This loading method assigns all meters within a service polygon to the specified demand node for that service polygon.

Nearest Node—This loading method assigns customer meter demands to the closest demand junction.

Nearest Pipe—This loading method assigns customer meter demands to the closest pipe, then distributes demands using user-defined criteria.

Equal Flow Distribution—This loading method equally divides the total flow contained in a flow boundary polygon and assigns it to the nodes that fall within the flow boundary polygon.

proportionally distributes a lump-sum flow among a number of demand nodes based upon the ratio of total service area to the area of the node's corresponding service polygon.

Proportional Distribution by Population—This load method proportionally distributes a lump-sum demand among a number of demand nodes based upon the ratio of total population contained within the node's corresponding service polygon.

Unit Line—This load method divides the total demand in the system (or in a section of the system) into 2 parts: known demand (metered) and unknown demand (leakage and unmeasured user demand).

Projection by Land Use—This method allocates demand based upon the density per land use type of each service polygon.

Load Estimation by Population—This method allocates demand based upon user-defined relationships between demand per capita and population data.

WaterGEMS can also allow the user to use a subset (domain) of the total model elements and to only assign demands to a user specified subset.

Elevation Extraction TRex helps engineers build water models easily by extracting node elevation data from several types of digital elevation

models: DXF contours, Land XML, Model spot elevations, GIS shapefiles, DEM’s, DTM’s, TIN. WaterGEMS can extract elevation data from both vector and raster formats. This is a huge time savings in building the model.

Time-Series Data WaterGEMS’s Time Series Field Data dialog allows you to enter your observed field data and compare it to the calculated results from the model in graph format. This is especially useful in comparing time series data for model calibration. This feature can be used to display user-supplied time variant data values alongside calculated results in the graph display dialog. Model competency can sometimes be determined by a quick side by side visual comparison of calculated results with those observed in the field.

H2OMap Water does not support time-series data.

Model Skeletonization Skelebrator removes network complexity while maintaining connectivity, hydraulic equivalence and reallocating assigned demands to your specifications.

1. Choose between automated or manual skeletonization options, mark elements to be kept, and specify flexible tolerances and conditions to control every step of the skeletonization process.

2. Use one of our four different skeletonization types: data scrubbing, branch trimming, series pipe removal and parallel pipe removal.

Variable Speed Pumps and Pump Batteries

WaterGEMS comes with an extremely powerful, exclusive (patented) variable speed pump feature. This feature was written to dynamically solve for the appropriate relative speed of the VSP pump(s) and can be used in any fashion with as many pumps in parallel as the user would like. All standard and logical controls can be used as with any other pump. This allows for true lead/lag pump modeling.

WaterGEMS can directly use a VSP pump with a pressure setting which will remove identifying storing and managing pump patterns. WaterGEMS also supports pumping patterns.

Changing a VSP pump attribute is a single click and because of inheritance it is instantaneously updated in all scenarios.

The speeds are calculated "external" to the main calculation that is done and then reinserted into their software. There are many other limitations of the H2OMap Water implementation – variable speed pumps cannot be placed in parallel, a target node cannot control more than one VSP. No lead/lag modeling.

H2OMap Water has a workaround to simulate VSPs by using a sub-routine i.e. first a pump speed pattern has to be developed for each pump and then applied to the pumps for running in a scenario.

WaterGEMS holds a patent on VSP pump battery technology and can model flow based VSPs.

H2OMap Water, all of the subroutines need to be changed individually.

Since H2OMap Water uses a subroutine instead of an inbuilt VSP, the simulation time is significantly longer for larger systems.

H2OMap Water does not have VSP pump batteries. H2OMap Water is also unable to have different speeds when multiple VSP pumps are in parallel. In WaterGEMS, variable speed pumps (VSPs) are operated as one group and led by a single VSP, the so-called lead VSP, while the other VSPs at the same battery are referred as to as lag VSPs. A lag VSP turns on and operates at the same speed as the lead VSP when the lead VSP is not able to meet the target head and turns off when the lead VSP is able to deliver the target head or flow.

H2OMap Water has no VSP pump batteries and cannot model flow based VSPs.

Multi-Point Pumps WaterGEMS creates a computed curve based on the actual points which is very accurate.

H2OMap Water creates a linear interpolation for multiple point pump curves.

Tanks WaterGEMS offers multiple options for tank inflow. H2OMap Water does not have the option to assign a negative demand to tank to simulate inflow. It requires the user to put in an additional reservoir and flow control valve.

Hydraulic ModelingFire Flow Analysis Determine if the system can meet fire flow demands while

maintaining various pressure and velocity constraints. Fire flows can be computed for a single node, a group of selected nodes, or all nodes in the system. Run a fire flow at peak times during your Extended Period Simulation or on Steady State. Use the Fire Flow Results Browser to quickly jump to fire flow nodes and display the results of fire flow analysis of the system for the specified fire flow run.

WaterGEMS supports multiple simultaneous fire flow calculations.

H2OMap Water does not have a quick fire flow navigator. H2OMap Water also fails the regression test when the fire flow computations are rerun multiple times.

Prototypes WaterGEMS allows users to create prototypes. Prototypes allow you to enter default values for elements in your network. These values are used while laying out the network. Prototypes can reduce data entry requirements dramatically if a group of network elements share common

H2OMap Water does not support prototypes.

Criticality WaterGEMS will automatically determine isolatable segments based on the location of your isolating valves. Choose the scenario and set the rules for use of valving and depending on the type of run, criticality analysis will report the flow shortfall, volume shortfall or pressure shortfall in the distribution system for each segment outage. Criticality will include the effects of reduced service pressure due to system outages.

WaterGEMS contains isolation Valves for accurate modeling of critical components of the system.

Model Design Enter your hydraulic constraints, allowable pipe sizes, and associated unit costs and run automatic or manual designs using Darwin Designer. Our genetic algorithm methodology will evaluate hundreds of thousands of design and rehabilitation strategies based on any of these three objectives: minimize cost, maximize benefits, or multi-objective.

Flushing WaterGEMS flushing can perform conventional or uni-directional flushing analysis. Decide which hydrants you want to flush, and WaterGEMS will check that the maximum velocity achieved in any pipe during a flushing operation is met. Open/close isolation valves to perform uni-directional flushing analysis. UDF is included at no additional cost with WaterGEMS.

Not available for H2OMap Water.

Scenarios let you set up an unlimited number of "What If?" situations for your model, and then modify, compute, review and compare your system under those conditions. WaterGEMS offers unique data inheritance between alternatives so that inherited data is always up-to-date in all scenarios.

WaterGEMS has inheritance to unlimited number of levels because of the MDB file structure.

Alternatives can be quickly changed in scenario using a drop-down.

This is one of the many reasons for Power & Water Corporation from Darwin Australia decided leave H2oMAP and chose WaterGEMS and converted all their model files now in WaterGEMS from H2OMAP Water.

No alternative inheritance. For example if you have 5 different physical alternatives and need to correct a mistake in an elements data you will need to change each individual alternative. Failure to update all alternatives results in inconsistent scenarios and errors.

Need to copy alternatives manually.

H2OMap Water has no inheritance because of .dbf file structure. H2OMap Water creates duplicate files every time a change needs to be made. For example, if there’s a model with 100,000 pipes and one pipe needs to be changed, it will only take a single pipe change in WaterGEMS, but a total of 100,000 pipes need to be changed in H2OMap Water. If the diameter for 2,000 pipes need to be changed in 50 scenarios (typical for a large system), it will be 2,000 changes in WaterGEMS but with H2OMap Water it would take 100,000 changes.

Switching scenarios in H2OMap Water is slow because another .dbf file and dataset needs to be swapped in the memory.

H2OMap Water scenario names have an 8 character limit because of the .dbf file structure.

Water Hammer Analysis The transient elements for Bentley’s HAMMER and WaterGEMS are within the same tool bar.

HAMMER can work independently in addition to being able to work within AutoCAD, ArcGIS and MicroStation.

Problem Finding Tools – Network Navigator

Network navigator includes tools for reviewing and managing complex queries and for quickly finding problem areas in the model, for example: negative pressures, closed pipes, empty tanks, pumps operating out of range, etc), drawing queries and others. SCADA Integration SCADAConnect allows the interaction with any SCADA system that supports open database connectivity (ODBC) interface or OLE DB interface. Citect's native application program interface (API) is used to allow access to data sampled by the Citect server. You can also connect to a database with many different types of data sources as needed.

H2OMap Water cannot bring SCADA information to its calibration module; it is limited to initial settings only. Bentley’s SCADAConnect can bring SCADA data to both calibration and initialization tables.
