COMPELLING THOUGHTS ON LEADERSHIP

A Personal NoteDear Professional:Greetings from HR Footprints!I found last one week to be very eventful. I came across a flurry of writings and talks on the theme of Leadership. I started consolidating all the thoughts for my personal record. As I started doing so, a thought crossed my mind – why not share the thoughts with other friends/ colleagues/ professionals? Knowledge dissemination is as important as knowledge creation. The compilation is from different sources. I read a few in regular press; IBR Institute of International Relations (Germany) in association with National HRD Network organized a seminar on “Leadership Perspectives” in Hyderabad. I chaired a session besides learning from the renowned speakers. I read an article by Mr Kumara Mangalam Birla, the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. When you read and interact with so many thought leaders, one surely tend to generate some views of one’s own and so I added a few of my thoughts as well in this compilation. Leaders are always faced with the challenge of balancing the push from the past and pull from the future while managing the present.

The biggest value addition from a leader to the followers is to make them believe in them that they have it in them to deliver what is expected of them.

Leadership involves playing the role of a guru who dispels darkness and offers light and clarity of thought.

What keeps me awake at night is not what our competitors are doing; it is the worry of not having sufficient leadership pipeline to work on the opportunities.

Others are evaluating the leader by how he/she thinks, speaks and walks.

The accumulation of trust is a measure of the legitimacy of leadership.

A leader can't pursue a global vision by remaining in the narrow confines of local values.

One can find 20000 books and 700 models of leadership; still there is a paucity of leadership at organizational, societal and national levels. Why? Is it because there is a growing demand or the supply never increases?

India needs leaders with global perspective and international experience; recent estimates show that India needs over 1000 CEOs across industries, many of them in new sectors such as SEZs, aviation, media, communications, real estate and retail. What are the “BIG IDEAS” to find an answer for the leadership gap?

Mentoring is one of the most effective ways of passing on the success DNA from one level of leadership to the next.

Good managers try optimizing within the boundaries while good leaders try to redefine the boundaries.

The true sign of a good leader is the potential realization of the follower.

It is essential for organizations to be very clear upfront as to how they wish to deploy the leadership talent that they groom.

Leadership development flourishes in an organization when a congenial culture exists for grooming leaders.

Leadership should not be viewed as an iconic status. We need to demystify leadership so as to make potential leaders believe in their leadership potential.

When a person like Jack Welsh found time to teach budding leaders, why leaders in organizations – who in comparison with Jack Welsh hold much smaller responsibility – can’t find time to groom leaders?

A qualifier for potential leader is superior performance and more importantly adherence to organizational culture and values.

Excellence of leadership can be realized when the leader experiences the joy of leading people and not see it as a burden.

Body of Knowledge on Leadership has phenomenally expanded in the recent times. There is no dearth of knowledge of leadership.

We know what leadership development is all about. To bridge the gap of supply of leaders, what we need is not aspiration alone, but ACTION.
