Suttons has made substantial progress in managing its safety performance since the Think SAFE initiative was launched four years ago. But, we can and must do more. We can never afford to relax our efforts to ensure the safety of our employees, the general public and the environment in which we operate. Safe operation is the primary objective of the Suttons Group and that requires the active participation of everyone in the business. As part of the Group’s Safety Programme, to re-energise our culture of valuing safety above all, we are holding a national safety seminar on 1st December involving all Directors, key managers, safety and driver representatives. This seminar will focus on the key role that everyone has to play in our plan to continuously improve safety. This seminar will provide the springboard for the roll out of safety training across the Group in the coming year. Further afield, we are also developing safety initiatives in international operations including training of depot and transport suppliers. These include support for the Group’s fast growing activities in China, where we are recruiting and training a specialist to manage safety issues including driver training. As you look through this edition of Newsfront, you will see that Suttons has won new business and that we have been recruiting people to fill key positions for the Group’s development. The development and operation of new business is obviously vital to the Group’s future success and we have now set ourselves challenging targets to increase the Group’s revenues by at least 50% by 2015. The critical element that will underpin achievement of our growth targets is the performance of people. That’s why this year we have run three management development programmes. In addition we are running supervisory management programmes in Widnes and Antwerp in early 2011. Finally, as I write this there are 40 shopping days to Christmas! So I would like to take this early opportunity to thank everyone for their contribution to the business over the last year and wish you a very happy holiday at Christmas and New Year. Successful Suttons customer workshop As part of Suttons’ ongoing commitment to providing the highest levels of customer service, Suttons USA have held a customer training and awareness workshop. Operational and Purchasing teams from Chevron Phillips, Mitsui, Huntsman, and Ineos joined Suttons at our depot at CBSL in Houston. Activities included a hands-on presentation on the working parts of an ISOtank, followed by an interactive depot tour where customers were able to feel, touch and look inside a Suttons tank. Ashley MacDonald from Mitsui Houston said “The Suttons Tank Workshop was a great opportunity to learn more about shipping ISOtank Containers. I gained a more in-depth understanding of how ISOtanks operate and how each technical component affects my shipments. This workshop helped me better understand my product/business, how to handle tank issues and every day operating procedures of loading, maintenance, and other importing/exporting activities.” Suttons will be holding similar workshops at all of our global depots during 2010/11.

Suttons has been contracted to transport the chemical CTF from

Mexichem’s manufacturing plant in Rocksavage to Huddersfield.

The project, largely driven by Suttons’ Mick Derbyshire and JonathanWebster, Global Buyer at Syngenta, has been in development since2008. The fleet of three tanks will be available for use from November2010.

Tag a Tank – wetrack a SuttonsISOtank around the world!SUTU 2641982 is one of 400 new ISOtanks beingproduced for Suttons this year at the Nantong NTTank Container production facility in East China. Butthis is no ordinary ISOtank…. To the envy of its 399siblings this tank has been selected to be the starof our new feature ‘Tag a Tank’, giving Newsfrontreaders a fascinating insight into a year in the life ofa Suttons ISOtank.

Rolling off the production line in August, the firstport of call for this tank was the Jurong ChemicalFactory located in East China’s Jiangsu Province.Jurong is a major producer of Polyol, which is oneof the key components of polyurethane foam, foundin furniture and car seats amongst other things.

The fully loaded tank was then taken to Shanghaiport for loading on board a ship bound for Busan,Korea. This is a short voyage of just under 2 days.

Once the Polyol was unloaded from our “StarISOtank”, it was cleaned and readied for its nextload. At the time of writing SUTU 2641982 isstanding by for new cargo to be exported fromKorea. It’s next journey could be anywhere in theworld. Newsfront readers will be the first to knowwhat it’s carrying, and where it’s headed!

New SYNGENTA contract – first new tank arrives…

Suttons has signed a long term contract with BP Saltend. The deal sees Suttonsdistributing bulk hazardous chemicals in the UK and Ireland from BP’s Hull site.

Andrew Palmer, Suttons Group Managing Director said: “We are delighted BP choseto award this business to Suttons.

We have learnt a lot about proactive safety management from BP. We have takenthe best of this and merged it with our own processes to create a strong safetyculture across our global business.”

Nigel Gilhooley, Commercial Manager at Suttons, said: “Suttons Think Safe

campaign is a good example of our focus on continuous improvement, targetingleading indicators such as near miss reporting to raise standards and removepotential risks.

“This safety focus is embedded in everything we do and the work that we carry outfor BP Saltend.”

Jonathan Garlick, Logistics Manager at BP Saltend, said: “We’ve worked withSuttons for many years and throughout, the company has provided exceptionallevels of safety performance and first-class customer service.”

Suttons have been awarded a contract with Grace Construction, a worldwide leader in the construction productsindustry. The agreement will see Suttons distributing bulk liquids through its tanker division and storing packedconsignments through its distribution and warehousing division.

Suttons will provide contract tankers and flexible support for Grace Construction’s national fleet network.

Suttons Group Managing Director Andrew Palmer said “Our presence in the UK road tanker, global Iso-container,and storage and warehousing markets provided a unique chance for Grace to appoint Suttons as its lead logisticsprovider.”

Suttons Celebrates contract win with Grace Construction

Suttons has signed a three year deal withYorkshire based Grosvenor Chemicals todistribute chemicals all over the UK fromGrosvenor’s manufacturing plant inHuddersfield.

Andy Shelbourne Grosvenor Chemical’s SiteDirector added “Grosvenor selected Suttons asits preferred haulier due to its recognition as aleading operator in the transport of bulk liquids,with the highest regard for safety.”

Suttons is providing dedicated tankers inGrosvenor Chemicals livery, modified to thecustomer’s specification.

Suttons have signed a contract with BOC to deliver aerosol propellants in the UK. Suttons will utilise its depotnetwork to provide a safe, efficient and cost effective service to BOC. This win for Suttons is in addition tothe existing relationship with BOC which includes pentanes and carbon dioxide distribution.

“Suttons have been selected by BOC on the basis of capability and value” says Ian Jackson, BOC UK TransportManager. “Throughout the selection process, BOC were focused on identifying a logistics partner for thefuture, one who could build on the existing high SHEQ and service standards but also assist in meeting BOC’sstrategic distribution objectives.”

&Suttons welcomes Graeme Rooneywho has been appointed as SuttonsRegional Director for Asia andMiddle East.

Graeme’s appointment is key to theGroups plan for growth across Asiaand the Middle East. Graeme will bebased in Singapore where he will beresponsible for managing Suttonsteams across Asia and the MiddleEast.

Graeme has extensive seniormanagement experience in logistics,most recently as Chief Executive ofTDG’s chemicals business.

Andrew Palmer, Group ManagingDirector of Suttons, said: “Graeme joins Suttons at an exciting stage inthe Group’s development. Asia and the Middle East are key developmentmarkets for Suttons and Graeme will be instrumental in building on thesuccess already achieved in these areas”.

UK Road TankersTony Leighton has been appointed asManaging Director of Suttons UK RoadTanker Division.

Tony joins the Company from Hoyer UK,where he spent 15 years leading their foodand petroleum sector operations. Hisappointment follows Suttons £7 millioninvestment in its UK road tanker fleet tosupport existing contracts and new businessincluding Grace Construction, GrosvenorChemicals and BOC.

Suttons Managing Director Andrew Palmersaid, “Tony’s appointment is key for us as hestrengthens and completes our senior managementteam. Tony’s experience will support ourcommitment to continuous improvement of existingUK based activities and to our planned developmentof new business”.

Group QSHEDepartmentLynsey Duncan has recentlybeen promoted to the role ofSuttons Group QSHE Advisor.Lynsey will focus on continuallyimproving the Group’s BusinessSystems and Health and Safetyprocedures.

Lynsey reports to Andrew BairdSuttons Group QSHE Director.

Also Joining Suttons and reporting into Lynsey Duncanis Joanne Dexter, in the role of Group QSHEadministrator.

Fellowship status for SueCongratulations to Suttons HR Officer Sue O’Grady who hasachieved Fellowship status with the Chartered Institute ofPersonal Development (CIPD). The accreditation of CharteredFellow demonstrates the expertise to lead the key areas ofHR.

Commenting on her achievement Sue O’Grady said “I amproud to have achieved Chartered Fellow of the CIPD. I would like to thank Michael Cundy and the seniormanagement team for their support during my studies.”

Suttons HR Director Michael Cundy said “Well done to Sue for achieving this veryimportant recognition. Sue’s achievements reaffirm Suttons’ commitment tosupporting continuous development for our people.”

ITAftab Bhatti has beenappointed as InfrastructureManager within the Group ITFunction and joined thecompany in July.

Aftab brings a wealth ofexperience to Suttons Groupthrough working in the ITindustry in a variety of operational environmentsincluding Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Abbey National,GE Capital and Virgin Atlantic. Aftab will report toRobert Sutton, Group IT Director.

Middle East and Asia Trevor Elston’s 25 years of service

Trevor Bell has beenappointed as TransportSupervisor South,managing drivers at theWissington and Cantleydepots. Trevor joinsSuttons Group aftercompleting 24 yearsservice in the ArmedForces, his last role beingDefence LogisticsTransport Managerresponsible for a fleet of 80 vehicles.

Also appointed to the British Sugar contractis David Pepper as Operations Manager. Davidhas responsibility for the scheduling function,maintaining high standards of customerservice and driving forward efficiencyimprovement.

Congratulations to Wayne White for completing his MBA at AshcroftInternational Business School.

Wayne is Transport Supervisor at Suttons Petroleum Depot in Grays.Wayne said of his achievement “It would have been extremely difficultto have achieved this MBA qualification without the support of SuttonsGroup, my family and work colleagues.”

Mick Derbyshire, Suttons TechnicalManager is presented with a bottle ofchampagne by John Sutton, Managing Director of Suttons International tocelebrate 30 years of service with the company.

Mick started work for Suttons in 1980 as an apprentice, working on the shopfloor in a variety of different roles. After completing his apprenticeship Mickwas promoted to the position of Charge Hand and then to Foreman.

In 2002 Mick became Suttons Technical Manager, the position he still holdstoday. Mick oversees all technical requirements, developments and projectsfor the International business.

JuneJune’s employee ofthe months is IanGraham, LGV Driverbased at Gretna.Ian was driving afully laden HGV northbound on the M6,when he wasinadvertently involved in a police high speedpursuit of a stolen vehicle.As the stolen vehicle overtook Ian, the Policedeployed a stinger device into Ian’s path, theSuttons vehicle tyres were instantly deflated.Using his experience and training, Ian wasable to control the vehicle and gently ease itoff the carriageway onto the hard shoulder. The offenders were subsequently arrestedand Ian has been commended by theLancashire constabulary for his skill andquick thinking.

AugustThe Employee of theMonth award forAugust goes to DaveSmith, TransportManager based atThornaby.Dave has beencommended by GaryThurlow, Logistics Manager at EPC Groupe forall the hard work and the changes put inplace by Dave and his team.Dave and his team were tasked by EPC toprovide a solution for a very complicatedissue whilst maintaining and servicing all ofEPC’s requirements.Gary Thurlow stated that this was anexcellent piece of work by Dave that trulydemonstrates Suttons skill set and value toEPC Groupe.

New tractor units hit the roadYou may remember in the last edition of Newsfront we announced Suttons massive investment of over £7million in new tractor units. The first of these new vehicles are now on the road and working hard withinSuttons UK Road Tanker business. Pictured here is one of the brand new Volvo FM’s. The tractor unit producesover 450 horsepower and is fitted with all of Suttons latest safety features such as electronic stability controland a frensel lens which allows the driver improved vision around the nearside of the cab. The new vehicleswill play an active role in supporting Suttons activities in the bulk food, chemical, fuel and gas sectors.

Employee ofthe month

Flying in!Andrew Palmer, Suttons Group MD, hitched a lift to the Goodwood Revival in September in thisvintage Miles Messenger aircraft. But can you guess the year and country in which it wasbuilt? (the aircraft-not Andrew!) Each correct entry will be placed in a hat and the winnerdrawn at random. The lucky winner will receive £25 worth of Marks & Spencer vouchers.Good Luck!
