“ The layout of the room and the quality of the equipment made the experience seamless. Our video conferencing partner could have been in the same room with us. There was no huddling round small screens with poor sound and picture quality and some group members feeling excluded. The overall experience comes highly recommended.”

When you’ve started at the bottom, reaching the top in business is not easy. Julie Watson, Director of Operations at Ardagh Glass says the management courses she has followed at the University of Lincoln have helped her enormously.
Julie started in the 1980s inspecting glass bottles on the production line. Thirty years on she has worked her way up to be Director of Operations at the same site, one of 88 locations operated by the global metal and glass packaging company Ardagh Group.
Each year, a handful of managers at Ardagh Group are invited to attend postgraduate professional development courses at the Lincoln Business School. Julie first enrolled on the Postgraduate Certificate of Management in 1997.
Over the course of a decade Julie studied for the Certificate, the Diploma and finally a Masters in Business Administration. She says the effect has been life-changing.
“Studying for the MBA has helped me phenomenally throughout my career and I think I’m a better person for it in how I manage and direct people,”Julie Watson
“The self-reflective aspects of the course have had a great impact on me – I would say I ‘saw the light’ and grew as a person while I was studying for the MBA.”
After 30 years at Ardagh Group Julie is now responsible for 256 employees at the Knottingley plant, and she says her studies have really helped her performance.
“It’s helped me to manage and direct and I’ve become a lot more knowledgeable about my own business, because the projects we chose to work on were based on our own experience,” she says.
Julie, who completed her MBA and graduated at Lincoln Cathedral in 2009, says studying at postgraduate level while working full-time in a high-pressured job is not easy.
“We had one workshop a month at the university and the rest of the time we were studying at home, which requires self-reliance and discipline. It’s difficult at times but you have to keep reminding yourself that there’s something in it for you as well as for the company.
“It’s helped me professionally and personally. I’ve grown so much. I’d go so far as to say that the MBA was the most powerful thing I’ve ever done.”

“The course was brilliant. It really helped us to spin the business around, to understand how it operates and implement changes.”Lindsay Nearn
Since completing the Business Inspiration course, Flying Hire has turned their fortunes around. They have expanded their fleet of generators from 6 to 50 with more expansion planned, and they have won some very large contracts both locally and nationally.
Their orders are have increased by over 300%, turnover is up and their profit margins are better than ever.
Lindsay said: “The course was brilliant. It really helped us to spin the business around, to understand how it operates and implement changes. When you’re running a business, it’s difficult to take a step back and look at it as a whole. That’s exactly what the course enabled us to do. We’ve looked at our customer base, our finances and our marketing. We now have a proper business plan and a vision that we are all working towards. I feel that we can now push on in a measured way, rather than just hoping that everything will work out.”
The future is looking bright for a plant hire company from Lincolnshire which has benefited from an SME Support programme – Business Inspiration, which was run by the University of Lincoln in 2010-2011.
Flying Hire, based in North Scarle, near Lincoln, has seen a dramatic transformation in fortunes over the past 12 months.
Thanks to the Business Inspiration course, the company is now looking forward to its 10th anniversary this year with a clear business plan, a healthy balance sheet and a burgeoning order book.
Flying Hire was hit badly by the recession, and it became clear to Director Lindsay Nearn that she needed a clear strategy and business plan to turn the company around.
Lindsay decided to take action and enrolled onto the Business Inspiration programme alongside 10 other SME’s (Small and Medium sized Enterprises) from a diverse mix of sectors and backgrounds.
The course, which was delivered in bitesize modules, provided guidance on key aspects of running a small business, such as identifying new business opportunities, managing cash flow and developing marketing strategies. With a mixture of academic and business-led teaching, Business Inspiration’s practical, hands-on approach made it accessible to a wide range of SME’s.
