Early Action candidates apply by November 1 and receive notication by December 15.

Regular Action candidates apply by January 1 and receive notication by April 1. While the nal deadline is January 1, it would bevery helpul to us to receive your application by December 15 so that we can create your admissions le as early as possible.

    Testing Requirements:

    General Application Tips:

Should Students Apply or Early Admission or

    Wait Until Regular Action?

Early Action began at Harvard in the 1970s. Designed to providereedom and exibility, Early Action gives students an earlyindication o their chances or admission. Tose admitted early

are ree to apply to other colleges, compare nancial aid oersrom other institutions, and need only make their nal collegechoice by May 1, the national Common Reply Date.

Initially, Early Action (and other early admission programs suchas Early Decision, which requires admitted students to enroll),received little attention. Relatively small numbers o studentsapplied early, and the overwhelming majority o students waitedto apply Regular Action.

oday, more students apply early to college. Students and theirparents are more sophisticated about the college admissionsprocess. Tey begin the college search earlier and with betterinormation than previous generations. College guidebooks, useo the Internet, and media coverage o college admissions andnancial aid have increased markedly. In addition, colleges havereached out as never beore in their eorts to recruit talentedstudents.

    Concerns About Early Admission

Many have asked whether too many students are applying early.Tey wonder i students are taking enough time and care to selectcolleges that best match their academic interests, career goals, andpersonal aspirations. Some have even used the word hysteria todescribe the peer pressure that induces some students to eel thatthey must apply early somewhere without considering which

colleges might be best or them. Some students have concludedthat it is imperative to apply early, whatever the circumstances, orear o being le behind.

In eliminating early admission or three years, we hoped (alongwith a ew other colleges that also suspended early admission)to reduce the renzy surrounding applying early to college. Teunoreseen economic turndown o recent years led students andtheir amilies to unprecedented levels o concern about admissionto selective collegesand to seek admission under earlyprograms. Such programs traditionally served a disproportionatenumber o auent students, but are now increasingly attractiveto amilies seeking nancial aid. As a result, we have re-instituted

Early Action.Tere is a good deal o conusion accompanying early admissionprograms. More colleges oer early programs, and there is abewildering array o application options. Some colleges oer bothEarly Decision and Early Action programs. Others oer two EarlyDecision programs. And timing or these programs extends wellbeyond the traditional November 1 deadline and mid-Decembernotication model. Tere is little wonder that students approachthe college admissions process with more uncertainty and anxiety, particularly concerning early admission.

An Overview o Early Admission Programs

While our principal purpose is to discuss Early Action at Harvarda brie overview o Early Decision will help to ocus on the two

    programs similarities and dierences.

Early DecisionEarly Decision is the early admission program oered by themajority o national colleges and universities (but not Harvard).Students must commit in advance to attend the Early Decisioncollege i admitted under its early program. Some Early Decisioncolleges oer students a better chance o admission i they applyearly. Students admitted Early Decision who seek nancial aid canbe released rom their commitment to enroll i their nancial aidaward vary signicantly rom their ability to pay.

    Early Action

Harvard College and a number o other institutions oer the

Early Action option on the same timetable as Early Decision:a November 1 application deadline and a mid-Decembernotication. Tere is, however, a signicant dierence betweenthe programs: Early Action is non-binding, meaning thatadmitted students are not obligated to enroll.

In contrast to some Early Decision colleges, Harvard does notoer an advantage to students who apply early. Historically, higherEarly Action acceptance rates have reected the remarkablestrength o Early Action applicant poolsnot less rigorousadmissions standards. For any individual student, the naldecision will be the same whether the student applies early orregular. Tere is no incentive whatsoever or Early Action colleges

to admit weaker candidates early and then have to reject strongerRegular Action candidates. Diminishing the quality o thestudent body would be antithetical to the goals o the institution.I Harvard had seen an institutional advantage in using EarlyAction, it would not have eliminated the program or three years.

Two Key Features o Early Action

    1. Flexibility in choosing colleges

A student admitted Early Action has until May 1, as do alladmitted students, to accept his or her place in the enteringclass. Secure in the knowledge that they have one college option,

students admitted Early Action share all the advantages oRegular Action applicants. Tey can take the ull senior year toapply to as many colleges as they wish and take the timevisitingcampuses and gathering additional inormationto make adenitive college choice. Tis reedom to choose a college overan extended period o time may account in part or Harvardsgraduation rate, which, at 98 percent, is among the nationshighest.

    2. Multiple fnancial aid options

Students admitted Early Action (and, o course, Regular Action)have the option to compare a variety o nancial aid oers i

    4/26

Our experience with Early Action orties our commitmentto its original goals o providing students and their amiliesreedom and exibility in choosing the best college andnancial aid options. For over a generation, both RegularAction and Early Action have allowed students to use the ullsenior year to reect on their uture plans and to ocus onwhich college will provide the best educational oundation ortheir individual needs and aspirations.

they choose to apply to other colleges during their senior year.Financial aid can be a decisive actor in choosing a college. Inorder to advance the undamental goal o admitting the beststudents without regard to their nancial circumstances, last yearHarvard awarded about $158 million in nancial aid to meeteach amilys demonstrated nancial need. Nearly 70 percent oHarvard students receive some orm o nancial aid and morethan 60 percent receive scholarship aid. All o Harvards aid isneed-based. Students and amilies should eel comortable with

their nancial aid oerlong-term college satisaction candepend upon it.

Early Action Versus Regular Action: Practical

Advice on Choosing When to Apply to College

In the absence o any strategic advantage to applying under eitherthe Early Action or the Regular Action program at Harvard, students should consider these actors:

For many good candidates, Regular Action oers an importantpractical advantage in the later application deadline (January1), allowing more time to complete applications to Harvardand other colleges. eachers and guidance counselors

supporting the application will have more time to becomeamiliar with the student. Regular Action is clearly preerableor those whose candidacies will be strengthened by senior-year extracurricular achievements and improved academicperormance.

For applicants whose records and accomplishments have beenconsistently strong over time, Early Action may be an attractivechoice. Harvards Early Action program allows admittedstudents to apply to other colleges during their Regular Actionprograms and use the rest o the senior year until May 1, thenational Common Reply Date, to compare admission andnancial aid oers and make their nal college choices.

    Important Inormation About Early Admission

Students applying to Harvard under the Early Action programare not permitted to apply early elsewhere in the all underSingle Choice Early Action or Early Decision programs.Harvard will rescind any oer o admission to a student whodoes so.

Students are allowed to apply in the all to public institutionsunder rolling or other non-binding programs. Tey may alsoapply in the all to any institution under its Regular Actionprogram and to oreign colleges and universities on any

application schedule.Aer students receive notication rom Harvards Early Actionprogram (around December 15), they are ree to apply to anyinstitution under any plan, including binding programs such asEarly Decision II.

Students admitted under an Early Decision program at anothercollege must withdraw any pending application to Harvard andare not eligible or admission.
