Thank you for your interest in Harvard College. We know there are many fine colleges and universities from which to choose, and we are happy that you are looking closely at the exciting opportunities available here in Cambridge.

You may apply to Harvard under either our Early Action or our Regular Action program. Designed to provide freedom and flexibility for our applicants, both options allow students to compare admission and financial aid offers from other institutions and to wait until May 1 to make a final college choice.

• Early Action candidates apply by November 1 and receive notification by December 15.

• Regular Action candidates apply by January 1 and receive notification by April 1. While the final deadline is January 1, it would be very helpful to us to receive your application by December 15 so that we can create your admissions file as early as possible.

For more information about whether to apply to Harvard (or other colleges) under Early admission, please refer to the next page.

The answers to many questions about admissions requirements and deadlines are included on the following pages. For an expanded list of frequently asked questions and their answers, please consult the FAQ index on our website: www.admissions.college.harvard.edu.

Each admission decision is made without any regard for a candidate’s financial need — a policy we call “need-blind admission.” Indeed the Admissions Committee may respond favorably to evidence that a candidate has overcome significant obstacles, financial or otherwise. Once an applicant is admitted, we create an individual financial aid package that will enable any aid applicant’s family to meet the cost of attendance. Providing financial access to Harvard for every admitted student is one of our highest priorities.

We hope you will take every opportunity to explore whether Harvard might be a good match for your academic, extracurricular and personal interests. Advice from your college counselor, your family and the many publications on college admission may help, as might a visit to Cambridge or a conversation with one of our more than 10,000 alumni/ae who help us recruit students in all 50 states and around the world.

Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you during the admissions process. Best wishes for a happy and productive year.

When to Apply:

• Keep copies of all materials submitted and ask your teachers to do the same. Materials can be lost in the mail.

• Supplementary materials or portfolios may be submitted, but you should do so only if you have an unusual talent. Such materials are neither required nor expected as the required components of the application provide ample basis on which to make our decisions. Because we cannot return materials, applicants should send only duplicates.

• Write about what matters to you. There are no “right” essay topics and no “right” answers.

Testing Requirements:• While Harvard honors the College Board’s Score Choice program and allows you to submit tests taken as late as January for

consideration, we advise Regular Action candidates to complete and submit at least one component of the required tests (SAT, ACT with Writing or two College Board Subject Tests) by the end of November. This will allow us to begin our evaluation process for those submitting applications by December 15.

• For Early Action candidates, we hope to receive all testing results by the end of October, but students are still eligible to apply using the November series. Those results will arrive in time for consideration without the need and expense of “rush reporting.”

Should Students Apply for Early Admission or Wait Until Regular Action? Early Action began at Harvard in the 1970s. Designed to provide freedom and flexibility, Early Action gives students an early indication of their chances for admission. Those admitted early are free to apply to other colleges, compare financial aid offers from other institutions, and need only make their final college choice by May 1, the national Common Reply Date.

Initially, Early Action (and other early admission programs such as Early Decision, which requires admitted students to enroll), received little attention. Relatively small numbers of students applied early, and the overwhelming majority of students waited to apply Regular Action.

Today, more students apply early to college. Students and their parents are more sophisticated about the college admissions process. They begin the college search earlier and with better information than previous generations. College guidebooks, use of the Internet, and media coverage of college admissions and financial aid have increased markedly. In addition, colleges have reached out as never before in their efforts to recruit talented students.

Concerns About Early AdmissionMany have asked whether too many students are applying early. They wonder if students are taking enough time and care to select colleges that best match their academic interests, career goals, and personal aspirations. Some have even used the word “hysteria” to describe the peer pressure that induces some students to feel that they must apply early “somewhere” —without considering which colleges might be best for them. Some students have concluded that it is imperative to apply early, whatever the circumstances, for fear of being left behind.

In eliminating early admission for three years, we hoped (along with a few other colleges that also suspended early admission) to reduce the frenzy surrounding applying early to college. The unforeseen economic turndown of recent years led students and their families to unprecedented levels of concern about admission to selective colleges—and to seek admission under early programs. Such programs traditionally served a disproportionate number of affluent students, but are now increasingly attractive to families seeking financial aid. As a result, we have re-instituted Early Action.

There is a good deal of confusion accompanying early admission programs. More colleges offer early programs, and there is a bewildering array of application options. Some colleges offer both Early Decision and Early Action programs. Others offer two Early Decision programs. And timing for these programs extends well beyond the traditional November 1 deadline and mid-December notification model. There is little wonder that students approach the college admissions process with more uncertainty and anxiety, particularly concerning early admission.

An Overview of Early Admission ProgramsWhile our principal purpose is to discuss Early Action at Harvard, a brief overview of Early Decision will help to focus on the two programs’ similarities and differences.

Early Decision

Early Decision is the early admission program offered by the majority of national colleges and universities (but not Harvard). Students must commit in advance to attend the Early Decision college if admitted under its early program. Some Early Decision colleges offer students a better chance of admission if they apply early. Students admitted Early Decision who seek financial aid can be released from their commitment to enroll if their financial aid award vary significantly from their ability to pay.

Early Action

Harvard College and a number of other institutions offer the Early Action option on the same timetable as Early Decision: a November 1 application deadline and a mid-December notification. There is, however, a significant difference between the programs: Early Action is non-binding, meaning that admitted students are not obligated to enroll.

In contrast to some Early Decision colleges, Harvard does not offer an advantage to students who apply early. Historically, higher Early Action acceptance rates have reflected the remarkable strength of Early Action applicant pools—not less rigorous admissions standards. For any individual student, the final decision will be the same whether the student applies early or regular. There is no incentive whatsoever for Early Action colleges to admit weaker candidates early and then have to reject stronger Regular Action candidates. Diminishing the quality of the student body would be antithetical to the goals of the institution. If Harvard had seen an institutional advantage in using Early Action, it would not have eliminated the program for three years.

Two Key Features of Early Action

1. Flexibility in choosing collegesA student admitted Early Action has until May 1, as do all admitted students, to accept his or her place in the entering class. Secure in the knowledge that they have one college option, students admitted Early Action share all the advantages of Regular Action applicants. They can take the full senior year to apply to as many colleges as they wish and take the time—visiting campuses and gathering additional information—to make a definitive college choice. This freedom to choose a college over an extended period of time may account in part for Harvard’s graduation rate, which, at 98 percent, is among the nation’s highest.

2. Multiple financial aid optionsStudents admitted Early Action (and, of course, Regular Action)have the option to compare a variety of financial aid offers if

Page 4: Complete Application 1112 Harvard

For Entrance in Fall 2012 • Application Materials• Our experience with Early Action fortifies our commitment

to its original goals of providing students and their families freedom and flexibility in choosing the best college and financial aid options. For over a generation, both Regular Action and Early Action have allowed students to use the full senior year to reflect on their future plans and to focus on which college will provide the best educational foundation for their individual needs and aspirations.

they choose to apply to other colleges during their senior year. Financial aid can be a decisive factor in choosing a college. In order to advance the fundamental goal of admitting the best students without regard to their financial circumstances, last year Harvard awarded about $158 million in financial aid to meet each family’s demonstrated financial need. Nearly 70 percent of Harvard students receive some form of financial aid and more than 60 percent receive scholarship aid. All of Harvard’s aid is need-based. Students and families should feel comfortable with their financial aid offer—long-term college satisfaction can depend upon it.

Early Action Versus Regular Action: Practical Advice on Choosing When to Apply to CollegeIn the absence of any strategic advantage to applying under either the Early Action or the Regular Action program at Harvard, students should consider these factors:

• For many good candidates, Regular Action offers an important practical advantage in the later application deadline (January 1), allowing more time to complete applications to Harvard and other colleges. Teachers and guidance counselors supporting the application will have more time to become familiar with the student. Regular Action is clearly preferable for those whose candidacies will be strengthened by senior-year extracurricular achievements and improved academic performance.

• For applicants whose records and accomplishments have been consistently strong over time, Early Action may be an attractive choice. Harvard’s Early Action program allows admitted students to apply to other colleges during their Regular Action programs and use the rest of the senior year until May 1, the national Common Reply Date, to compare admission and financial aid offers and make their final college choices.

Important Information About Early Admission

• Students applying to Harvard under the Early Action program are not permitted to apply early elsewhere in the fall under Single Choice Early Action or Early Decision programs. Harvard will rescind any offer of admission to a student who does so.

Students are allowed to apply in the fall to public institutions under rolling or other non-binding programs. They may also apply in the fall to any institution under its Regular Action program and to foreign colleges and universities on any application schedule.

After students receive notification from Harvard’s Early Action program (around December 15), they are free to apply to any institution under any plan, including binding programs such as Early Decision II.

• Students admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission.

You or your guidance counselor may use one of the official forms or may simply write a short letter asking us to waive your fee.

Common Application and Universal ApplicationHarvard accepts the Common Application and the Universal College Application. Both are treated equally by the Admissions Committee. Please choose one.If you do not receive acknowledgement of your application within two weeks of submitting your application, please write to [email protected], with “Confirm Receipt of Application” as the subject line, or call (617) 495-1551. This is very important, because applications can get lost in the mail. Please note, we will not begin processing applications until late October so the earliest acknowledgements will be sent in mid-October.

School Report and Mid-Year School ReportPlease give these forms to your school counselor or other school adviser and ask that the School Report form be completed and returned to our office as soon as possible. The Mid-Year Report should be returned in February with your latest grades. If you have attended more than one high school in the past two years, give a second copy of the School Report to your former counselor(s) or school official to complete.

Teacher EvaluationsAsk two teachers in different academic subjects who know you well to complete the Teacher Evaluation forms either online or using the copies in this booklet.

Standardized TestingWe require the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test with Writing, as well as two SAT Subject Tests. Students should not submit two Subject Tests inmathematics to meet this requirement. Candidates whose first language is not English should ordinarily not use a Subject Test in their first language to meet the two Subject Tests requirement.

Students are free to use the College Board Score Choice option or the similar option offer by the ACT. Our official codes are 3434 for the College Board SAT Reasoning and Subject Tests and 1840 for the ACT. Directions for sending your official scores to the admissions office can be found at http://sat.collegeboard.com/student/scores/send-sat-scores.html for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests and www.actstudent.org/scores/send/ for the ACT.

When registering for tests, please use your name as it will appear on your Harvard application. Using a nickname may prevent your scores from matching the rest of your application in our database.

In order for your application to be considered complete, we must have official test scores submitted directly to Harvard by the testing agency on your behalf. If we do not receive your official scores from the testing agency, we will be unable to make an admission decision. Please plan accordingly.

Applicants Outside the United States

If you are applying from a school outside the United States, you should follow the same procedures and timetables as candidates applying from schools within the U.S. Below are a few special notes.

Testing RequirementsEven if you are submitting the results of your school leaving exams (e.g., A-levels, International Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc.) you must submit the results of the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT (with Writing, if avail-able), as well as the results of two SAT Subject Tests by the appropriate deadline.

A candidate whose first language is not English should ordinarily not take the SAT Subject test in his or her native language as one of the two required SAT Subject Tests. All students are encouraged to submit addi-tional Subject Tests (which may include one in a student’s first language),

Students are not required to take the TOEFL unless they do not have access to other standardized tests.

InterviewsWhile we try to make interviews widely available, it is not always possible to arrange one abroad. No candidate is at a disadvantage if an interview cannot be arranged. Please see our website to determine whether an interview is possible in your home country.

TranslationsWe appreciate the effort that many applicants make in providing the Admissions Committee with a translation of the recommendations submitted on their behalf. We ask, however, that any translations include the name of the translator and that the original untranslated reports be submitted as well.

Application FeeYou may pay online by credit card via the Common Application or the Universal Application websites. Please be sure that your credit card has been activated for Internet transactions.

If paying by check, international applicants should send us the application fee in the form of a foreign draft—a check in U.S. dollars that is drawn through a U.S. bank, which is generally available at most foreign banks.

To send the fee to us via wire transfer, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and we will send instructions on how to do so. Please be sure to include your full name, date of birth and name of high school in your message.

Harvard Admission Policy

Harvard University makes all decisions concerning applicants, students, faculty and staff on the basis of the individual’s qualifications to contribute to Harvard’s educational objectives and institutional needs.

Discriminating against individuals on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, veteran status or disability unrelated to course requirements is inconsistent with the purposes of a university and with the law.

Misrepresentation of Credentials

Occasionally, a candidate for admission will make inaccurate statements or submit false material in connection with his or her application. In most cases, these misrepresentations are discovered during the admission process and the applicant is denied admission. If a misrepresentation is discovered after a candidate has been admitted, the offer of admission normally will be withdrawn.

If a misrepresentation is discovered after a student has registered, the offer of admission normally will be revoked and the student will be required to leave the College. If the discovery occurs after a degree has been awarded, the degree normally will be rescinded.

The determination that an application is inaccurate or contains misrepresentations rests solely with the Admissions Office and will be resolved outside the student disciplinary process.

Application Content Verification Service

Please be aware that Harvard, like most schools, uses outside companies to help process, review and collect data for applications. For this purpose we share application materials and information with them. Examples of such outside companies include the Common Application and Universal College Application, transcript request services, and services that review materials for plagiarism. These companies in many cases will retain the application information in their databases. We also share application information with our alumni interviewers.

Please write an essay of 250 – 500 words on a topic of your choice or on one of the options listed below, and attach it to your application before submission. Please indicate your topic by checking the appropriate box. This personal essay helps us become acquainted with you as a person and student, apart from courses, grades, test scores, and other objective data. It will also demonstrate your ability to organize your thoughts and express yourself. NOTE: Your Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Do not customize it in any way for individual colleges. Colleges that want customized essay responses will ask for them on a supplement form.

p 1 Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

OPTIONAL We do not expect or require applicants to submit supplementary materials or additional essays. We simply want to be certain that you have every opportunity to tell us about yourself.

Supplementary Materials

The required components of the application to Harvard provide ample basis to make our admission decisions. However, students with exceptional talents or achievements may send music recordings, slides of artwork or selected samples of academic work or creative writing for us to consider as part of their application files. At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, submissions may be evaluated by faculty. Supplementary materials are not required or expected—and should be sent only if the applicant’s work is unusually advanced. Because we cannot return such materials, applicants should send only duplicates. For more information, please visit our website: www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/apply/application_process/supplements.html.

Check here if you are planning to send supplementary materials to be evaluated as part of your application. Please send all supplementary materials to the Admissions Office so that they can be properly labeled and included in your file. DO NOT submit materials directly to academic departments. If you are submitting research materials for review, please include a short statement putting the research project into the context of your academic interests and future plans and clearly indicate the research advisor (if any) with whom you have worked.

FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FROM SCHOOLS OUTSIDE THE U.S. AND CANADA (regardless of citizenship)

Month/day/year

• Students applying to Harvard under the Early Action program are not permitted to apply early elsewhere in the fall under Single Choice Early Action or Early Decision programs. Harvard will rescind any offer of admission to a student who does so.

Students are allowed to apply in the fall to public institutions under rolling or other non-binding programs, and they may apply to colleges under Interim Decision programs, that inform applicants of admission after January 1. They may also apply to any institution under its Regular Action program and to foreign colleges and universities on any application schedule.

After students receive notification from Harvard’s Early Action program (around December 15), they are free to apply to any institution under any plan, including binding programs such as Early Decision II.

• Students admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission.

Important Information about Early Admission

Please be aware that Harvard, like most schools, uses outside companies to help process, review and collect data for applications. For this purpose we share application materials and information with them. Examples of such outside companies include the Common Application and Universal College Application, transcript request services, and services that review materials for plagiarism. These companies in many cases will retain the application information in their databases. We also share application information with our alumni interviewers.
