Dear Kindergarten – 9th Grade Student,

Youth in Boone and Story Counties are invited to help ISU students preparing to become math

teachers at a one-time problem solving activity April 13, 6-7 p.m. at 1680 in Lagomarcino Hall on the ISU

Campus. No test, no grades, just an opportunity to help future teachers become great teachers. The future

teachers will create math problems targeted to the youth interests and grade levels. They need to know who

will participate by March 21 so they can create math problems.

If you are willing to participate, please respond by completing a couple questions and the

permission form (signed by parent/guardian) in this letter. Return to Annette Brown by March 21 at

[email protected] or Boone County Extension, 1327 SE Marshall Street, Boone IA 50036.

See detailed information below. Let me know if you have questions, 515-432-3882.

Annette Brown, 4-H Youth Program Specialist

Letter from Dr. Ji-Yeong I:

I am Dr. Ji-Yeong I at Iowa State University. I am teaching mathematics methods courses for future

math teachers and am collaborating with Extension and Outreach in Boone and Story Counties to recruit K-9

grade youth who can work with us. I am requesting at least 10-15 youth to participate in our fun hands-on 1-

hour math event (April 13), which is a part of our coursework. I believe this collaboration is win-win for both

the future teachers and participating youth because the future teachers can have authentic teaching experiences

through this collaboration and the youth can have an opportunity to learn mathematics in a fun way.

Our future teachers who enroll in this course are mostly college seniors and graduate students who are

approaching their student teaching and graduation. All of them have done some practicum field experience in

K-9 schools in Iowa. They have completed the necessary process to work with minors such as background

check.

ISU Course: EDUC 513 Problem Solving in K-12 Classrooms. In this course, the future teachers

explore mathematical problem solving which is relevant to real-world situations and learn to create/teach real-

life connecting math problems in a student-centered approach.

Expectation: The future teachers will create a real-life math problem/activity in this course and work

with youth using the activity for 1 hour in small groups (the numbers of youth and future teachers in one group

depend on the number of participating youth). The future teachers will create problems based on participant’s

grade level and interests. If you are interested, respond to a few questions and complete a permission form

signed by parent/guardian attached. Return to Annette Brown ([email protected]) by March 21. This

will allow time for the college students to prepare problems/activities based on youth’s interests.

Date and Time (It is a one-time meeting): April 13, 6:00-7:00 p.m. is our plan for youth to visit (this is during the course’s regular class time). The

classroom is 1680 in Lagomarcino Hall on the ISU Campus; it is on the first floor Northeast corner. Attached is

a map of first floor. On the map, 1680 is on the right corner on the bottom and the drop off/pickup area is in the

middle of the bottom line. Parking near the building is free after 5:30 p.m.

Thank you so much!
