Review: What is a Compound Sentence?

What is a compound sentence?A compound sentence is two

sentence (two ideas) that are connected by words like, AND, BUT or So.

A compound sentence must have two 2 subjects and 2 verbs.

Example with using AND: I am hungry, and my friend

is thirsty.

Last time we studied compound sentences using BUT.

Why do we use BUT?We use BUT in a compound

sentence to connect two sentences in which we show difference in ideas.

You must always use connectors (AND, BUT, or So) to connect two sentences or two ideas.

This lesson teaches us when to use AND in a compound sentence?

We use AND to join two or more words that are in the same grammar category.

Compound Sentences with AndWe use AND to join two or more words that are in

the same grammar category. We can connect two nouns (subjects or objects), verbs, and adjectives by using And.

For example: Johnny and Ali play football at the Ha’il University.

AND is being used to combine two sentences.Sentence 1: Johnny plays football at the Ha’il

University.Sentence 2: Ali plays football at the Ha’il

University.

To combine two sentences that are in the same category we use AND: Johnny AND Ali play football at the Ha’il University.

In this example, we use AND to join two nouns and makes the subject of the sentence plural.

Compound Sentences with ANDHere is another examples that show you how to

use AND to join two nouns and make the object plural.

For example: Hassan plays X-Box games and plays Play Station 3 games.

Sentence 1: Hassan plays X-Box games Sentence 2: Hassan plays Play Station 3 games.The purpose of AND is clear here. We are using

AND to connect two nouns.

We also use AND to join two verbs in a sentence.

For example: Ahmad walks and jogs in the park everyday.

Sentence 1: Ahmad walks in the park everyday.

Sentence 2: Ahmad jogs in the park everyday.

We combine the two sentences by using AND.

New sentence: Ahmad walks and jogs in

the park.

We can further use AND to join two adjectives together.

For example: Bilal is an intelligent and a kind man.

Sentence 1: Bilal is an intelligent man.

Sentence 2: Bilal is a kind man.

Bilal is an intelligent man and a kind person.

Intelligent AND kind are adjectives.
