Compound Words

As you already know - compound words are two little words mashed together to create a new word, with a new meaning!For example - straw+berry = strawberryLook at the words on the next few slides, and try and point out the compound words.

Simple Sentences

The basic structure of a sentence contains a subject and a verb.

Its purpose is to express a complete thought.

Extra: A sentence can also be called a independent clause.

In the following ‘simple sentences,’ subjects (or nouns) are in yellow, and verbs are in red.

Examples:

Some students like to study in the mornings.

The children are playing quietly.

The class read peacefully.

Compound Sentences

These are words that connect ‘simple sentences’ together to create compound sentences. The logic of making compound sentences is basically the same as making compound words. This time instead of having two words mashed together - we mash two sentences together with a connecting word.

Now, add a connecting word and the sentence becomes like this:

Maria and Ned went to the shop.
