Magnifiers are one of the traditional aids to improve vision and are thus a preferred solution for visually impaired people.

They are used wherever it is necessary to enlarge an image. Be it for reading, in cases of reduced visual acuity, or to see details more clearly in hobby or leisure activities.

Illuminated magnifiers combine such an enlarged image with the advantages of optimised lighting. Individually tested light temperatures improve contrast vision and thus visual acuity.

Modern illuminated magnifiers are mainly battery-operated. One of the latest innovations in this field uses wireless charging and thus eliminates the need to replace batteries.

One of the key elements of low vision solutions is the provision of special lighting to suit the patients’ individual needs.

Multiple studies conducted by Professor Hartmann from Munich/Germany with visually impaired people have shown that the provision of appropriate lighting can significantly improve visual acuity. An individually tested light temperature ensures comfortable and relaxed reading.

The retinal image can be enlarged by reducing the distance between the object and the eye below the normal reading distance (relative distance or approach magnification).

However, the presbyopic eye is no longer able to focus on objects at such a close distance. This loss of accommodative ability requires corrective optics such as high addition spectacles.

Patients with binocular potential need glasses with base-in prisms to support convergence.

6Telescopes

Visually impaired people – often elderly people – frequently express the desire to be able to watch TV and to read newspapers, bank statements, telephone directories or drug package inserts, for example.

Consequently, maintaining or restoring reading ability is essential when it comes to magnifying aids. Telescopic systems are a possible solution to this challenge, since they enable both near and distance viewing.

Telescopes with a magnification power of up to 6 x can be mounted on a frame to create hands-free telescopic spectacles. For higher magnification strengths, hand-held monocular telescopes are also available.

Application tip

SCHWEIZER Keplerian systems can be focused to different working or reading distances as required. Furthermore, they offer the following application options:

Application with focus stop ring The eye care professional adjusts the telescope focus to the desired distance, e.g. for watching TV, and fastens the focus stop ring on the housing to act as a stopper.

For closer working distances, the visually impaired person can still turn the objective lens outwards until the image is crisp and clear. Turning the objective lens back until the stopper is reached, refocuses the telescope for the original application, such as watching TV.

Application with fixed focus The eye care professional adjusts the telescope focus to the desired distance, e.g. for watching TV, and locks this setting using the locking screws in the housing. For close working distances, the front caps of SCHWEIZER Galilean telescopes can be used with an adapter.

It is recommended to use fixed focus systems for visually impaired people who lack the necessary fine motor skills.

In most cases a large back vertex distance BVD is necessary for telescopic spectacles. SCHWEIZER telescope frames are designed accordingly. However, if needed, the BVD of the titanium telescope frames with variable saddle bridge systems can be reduced by 3 mm. For this purpose, a flat saddle bridge (included) can be mounted. This is a fast and easy way to react to different optical and anatomic conditions.

towards the harbour and the bay beyond. A warm sea breeze ruffled the

waters and filled the sails of the yachts making their way towards the harbours mouth.

It was going to be a beautiful day! Brian decided to wander into the village and have breakfast at the pretty cafe by the

harbour masters cottage. The smell of freshly made coffee and pastries met his nostrils as he stepped through the open door. He glanced around the room

and recognised some of the faces of the locals he had met in the village pub the previous evening. The weather beaten faces of the fishermen broke into broad smiles as they saw him. He looked around the

bustling cafe to find a spare table, but was beckoned to share a table with the ancient retired village schoolmaster, George Hunter. Having travelled by boat from his native Canada in the 1940’s, George had been instantly enchanted by the village

and it’s friendly hard working people. George had often talked with Brian about some of his pupils, who were now retired themselves. He had also taught their children and was familiar with as many as four generations of the same family. He was always amazed at his good fortune to have ended up in this

village and to have lived so long. He cherished every day and was content with his lot. Brian ordered fresh cups of coffee for both of them and George folded up his newspaper with it’s half finished cross word. George was a bright and alert man despite his great age and although his old joints creaked a little, he still played an active part in village society. He was warmly regarded by all who knew him and was

seen as a fountain of knowledge. Everyone wanted George in their team whenever there was a quiz night at the pub or village hall. Brian was no exception and had fond memories of being on the winning team with free drinks for the rest of the evening. Brian had on a number of occasions, used George to settle arguments and wagers with the locals about historical facts. His mind was a cornucopia of information and a deep depository of hilarious anecdotes. Who needed the internet?
