2007 Knight, M. (2007, October). Identifying Patterns of Escalation: A Novel Approach to Care. 21st Annual Conference of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Kissimmee, FLA. This paper was a summary & presentation of a study using content analysis as a method to identify symptoms and symptom progression in a group of individuals who experienced a restraint episode during their hospitalization. Identifying patterns of escalation and aggression early may lead to a reduction in restraint.

Sensory Stimulation Interventions: Managing Psychiatric Symptoms. 21st Annual Conference of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Kissimmee, FLA. Psychiatric nursing relies heavily on verbal communication as an intervention for individuals with mental health problems, yet those individuals with serious cognitive impairment may not use verbal interventions effectively. This paper described a pilot study which provided data supporting the use of sensory tools as effective interventions in a group of psychiatric patients.

Few psychiatric nursing interventions are supported by evidence in the literature. This data based pilot study sought to develop beginning evidence to support teaching mindfulness meditation skills to psychiatric inpatients hospitalized on a short term unit.

Funded by McLean Hospital, 2009 – 2011. There is limited evidence to support the use of “as needed” medication for hospitalized psychiatric inpatients yet this is practiced widely. This data based study evaluated agitation scores and their relationship to as needed medication administration.

Bernstein, M. (Co-Investigators). An Assessment of Polytherapy and Clinical Outcomes Related to Psychotropic Medications Among Patients Admitted to an Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. Funded by McLean Hospital. This study evaluated the risk for tachycardia as an adverse event in psychiatric inpatients receiving psychotropic agents. Identifying risk is critical for psychiatric care providers who are managing acute symptoms.

2009 Knight, M. (PI), Coakley, C., Centorrino, F., Vincenti, A., and Ventriglio, A. (Co-Investigators). The Assessment of Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Outcomes in an Adult Psychiatric Outpatient Population. Funded by McLean Hospital, 2009 – 2011. This study is a replication of the above study to establish whether the risk of tachycardia remains once symptoms and medication dosages have stabilized.

2008 Melillo, K. (co-PI), Dowling, J. (co-PI), Abdallah, L. Findeisen, M. and

Knight, M. (co-Investigators) Bring Diversity to Nursing. Training Grant, Department of Health & Human Services; $894,085, 3 year award. Funded 2008 – 2011. This training grant provides support for the retention and graduation of diverse nursing students. This was one of the three programs highlighted in the Presidents Community Engagement Award, given to the University in 2010 and 2011.

2008 Knight, M. (PI), Coakley, C. (co-Investigator) Falls in Psychiatric

Inpatients Ages 21-65. Funded by McLean Hospital, 2008. Falls are an adverse event and can lead to significant injury in hospitalized patients. We evaluated falls in a young – middle aged adult population and developed and tested an intervention to reduce falls in this group.

2007 Melillo, K. (co-PI), Dowling, J. (co-PI), Abdallah, L. Findeisen, M. and

Knight, M. (co-Investigators) MDPH Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Workforce Development, Educational Opportunities Grant. Massachusetts Department of Health; $183,000, 3 year award. Funded 2007-2010. This Grant supported pre-entry recruitment activities within the Lowell and Lawrence school systems. There are several evaluative components to this grant.

2006 Knight, M. (PI), Kovach, J. Adkison, L. (co-Investigators) Sensory

Stimulation Interventions: Managing Psychiatric Symptoms. Funded by McLean Hospital 2006-2007. Sensory interventions have been used in non-psychiatric populations to decrease agitation. This data based pilot study was conducted to determine whether the use of sensory tools by psychiatric patients could decrease measures of agitation.

This article describes a program which taught meditation and yoga to individuals hospitalized for depression. Mindfulness scores supported the intervention.

This article is a description of the afterschool program developed for Lowell and Lawrence middle schools for the MDPH Reducing Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: Workforce Development, Educational Opportunities Grant. The manuscript details a method to introduce nursing to students and at the same time, providing health education.

This data based study provided critical information about effective interventions for fall prevention in young and middle aged hospitalized psychiatric patients. It received significant attention nationally and has led to invited presentations as fall prevention is a national health care focus.

Psychiatric nursing relies heavily on verbal communication as an intervention for individuals with mental health problems, yet those individuals with serious cognitive impairment may not use verbal interventions effectively. This data based pilot study supported the use of sensory tools as effective interventions in a group of psychiatric patients.

2008 Knight, M. & Houseman, E.A. (2008). A collaborative model for the treatment of depression in homebound elders. Issues in Mental Health Nursing 29(9), 974-981. Cited by six. Homebound elders have severely limited access to mental health care yet their life circumstances increase their risk of developing depressive symptoms. This manuscript describes a community data based study which evaluated depressive symptoms among elders and instituted a collaborative intervention to improve symptom management.
