INTRODUCTION

• Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is one in which the functions and motions of a machine tool are controlled by means of a prepared program containing coded alphanumeric data.

• CNC can control the motions of the workpiece or tool, the input parameters such as feed, depth of cut, speed, and the functions such as turning spindle on/off, turning coolant on/off.

HISTORY

• The first commercial NC machines were built in the 1950's, and ran from punched tape.

• In 1970 the first CNC machine is introduced with the advancement of following-a)Standard G-Code Language for Part Programsb)Computer Aided drawingc)Microcomputers

WORKING• CNC means Computer Numerical Control. This means a

computer converts the design produced by Computer Aided Design software (CAD), into numbers.

• The numbers can be considered to be the coordinates of a graph and they control the movement of the cutter. In this way the computer controls the cutting and shaping of the material.

•  G-code is a standardized programming language that many CNC machines understand.

• A CNC system consists of three basic components-1.Part program2.Machine Control Unit (M.C.U)3.Machine tool (lathe, drill press, milling machine etc)
