vi Computer Skills Workbook for Fluency with Information Technology, Fourth Edition

About This Workbook

This workbook is for students who want to increase their knowledge of Computer Literacy and get started with the Microsoft® Office 2007, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X applications. It includes explanations, examples, and step-by-step exercises to help students become productive with Microsoft® Office tools, including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. The labs provide an excellent introduction to popular applications and bring students to a level where basic skills are mastered and an understanding of some of the more advanced capabilities of Microsoft Office are understood conceptually.

This workbook is specifically designed as a supplement to Fluency with Information Technology: Skills, Concepts, and Capabilities by Lawrence Snyder (“the FIT book”). Many people teaching or taking a traditional Computer Literacy course want to embrace the basic tenets of Computer Fluency, and this workbook, together with the FIT book, allows them to do so.

What’s in This Workbook?

The workbook contains 14 modularized labs, suitable for self-study or instructor-guided lab classes:

• Lab 1 Introduction to Microsoft Windows

• Lab 2 File Management

• Lab 3 Word Processing Basics Using Microsoft Word

• Lab 4 Microsoft Word Layout and Graphics Features

• Lab 5 Spreadsheet Concepts Using Microsoft Excel

• Lab 6 Spreadsheet Concepts: Creating Charts in Microsoft Excel

• Lab 7 Debugging Concepts Using Microsoft Excel

• Lab 8 Database Concepts Using Microsoft Excel

• Lab 9 Database Concepts Using Microsoft Access

• Lab 10 Advanced Database Concepts Using Microsoft Access

• Lab 11 Presentation Concepts Using Microsoft PowerPoint

• Lab 12 Image Concepts

• Lab 13 The World Wide Web Using Microsoft Internet Explorer

• Lab 14 Email Using MSN Hotmail

Each lab includes an explanation of concepts within the step-by-step exercises and review material at the end of each lab that summarizes what was covered. This modularization allows students to focus their study on individual concepts; each lab or group of labs can be completed without prior labs as prerequisite material.

Each lab includes references to specific skills, concepts, and capabilities, as per the NRC’s “Top Ten Skills, Concepts, and Capabilities” for Computer Fluency.

How to Use This Workbook

• Self-Study or “Pre-Fluency”: Students can complete the workbook prior to using Fluency with Information Technology, and they’ll be prepared with all the “point and click” knowledge they need to focus fully on Fluency.

• Instructor-Lead Lab Sections: Each lab is designed in a suitable format for a traditional lab class (focused on computer skills).

Supplemental Materials
