check own ideas, promote discussion and identify possible enquiries at the beginning of the lesson
at the end of a topic to review learning and apply ideas to situations
developing literacy skills for teaching English and encouraging everyone to put forth your views
![Page 5: Concept cartoons](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050720/5477a096b4af9fcd578b4758/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
suitable for wide age and ability range as learners interpret the concept cartoon in a way they find meaningful
situations will mean different things to different groups
when you are more involved, you are more motivated towards learning
![Page 6: Concept cartoons](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050720/5477a096b4af9fcd578b4758/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
more able learners create their own concept cartoons
as a lead in to debate in which learners can side with different characters
as a challenge to see who can produce the most interesting/imaginative concept cartoon

What is the science concept
behind these concept cartoons?
![Page 8: Concept cartoons](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022050720/5477a096b4af9fcd578b4758/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
If all the plants died, then all the animals
would die too! If all the plants died, then the
foxes would live if some rabbits
were left to breed.
If all the plants died, then the rabbits would die but not the foxes? True?
Food Chains & Food Webs

There are always more rabbits than foxes so
there is enough food for the foxes It’s because the
foxes are at the top of the food chain so they
have more energy
It is because the rabbits do not need as much to eat.
Food Chains & Food Webs
It’s because the rabbits
produce more babies

Recycling paper takes less
energy than making new
paper
We will run out of trees if we do
not recycle paper
Paper is biodegradable so we do not
need to recycle it
We will run out of paper if we do not
recycle it
Recycling – Effects of the environment

Cactus Valley
The cactus has needle-like leaves that
reduce water loss.
The cactus has spines because they fall off and grow into new cactus plants.
The cactus has spines so that animals do not
eat it.
Thick fleshy stems can store water and stems
have chlorophyll to take over the process of
photosynthesis

How would you improve these
concept cartoons?

Oh no!It’s a snake!
I think its time to change my
colour.
Do you know why chameleons change their
colour ?
Of course. AChameleon
changes its colour to hide from its

Camel do not store water in their humps as it is commonly believed.
Do you know that camel store water in their blood?
Camel has long legs to keeps its body far from the hot sands .It also has large padded feet to prevent it from sinking into the sands.
A camel’s thick coat reflects sunlight ,it also insulates it from the intense heat radiated from the desert sand.

They get their energy by breaking down dead matter. I can be decompose too….
I can enrich the soil too…
We ensure that the earth would not be covered with dead matter and animal waste too.

Group Work
- Gather in groups of 4 or 5 and assign a number to each member of the group. (CLS: Number Heads Together)- Duties:-
- Number 1: Controls the computer- Number 2: Leader- Number 3: Time Manager- Numbers 4/5: Research Analysts
- Select a science concept and go to www.makebeliefscomix.com
- All groups given 20 minutes to design their concept cartoon and save the completed work under the Student Project folder
