Celebrating Pastoral Care Week
Dexter, the Grand-dog
The Miele family’s “Claim to Fame” is Dexter McGoogles—an almost four-year-old rescue dog. His human grandmother, Candice Miele, is one of our Lutheran Home social workers.
Dexter has recently appeared in the first of a series of American Greetings “Just For You” greeting cards, making him famous in our area.
Dexter is a unique looking dog, to say the least. He is a Dachshund mix, with naturally blue, googly eyes! What makes him extra special, is that he was the product of a puppy mill. The owners of the mill sold him off at a puppy auction, because they didn’t consider him “breed worthy.”
Roianne Miele was the family member who purchased the little star from the auction. He was just so cute, well-behaved and photogenic, that Roianne started promoting him just for the fun of it

A Note from Human Resources Rod Braye, VP —————————————————————————- Please be reminded, as we enter the holiday season, that it’s very important to make sure all of your employee information is current. An inaccurate home address may mean that you miss receiving mailed communication from us. Things like W-2’s will go to the wrong address if you have not taken the time to make sure we have good information.
As many of you know, the Affordable Care Act will continue to change the way Americans access health care. LH will be working with our broker to get you information to help you manage through all the changes which will be a part of early 2014. We will be doing open enrollment for our medical, prescription and other insurances in December and January. Stay tuned for more information!
Stop by the HR department offices and take advantage of the many organizations which offer discounted pricing for their services, because you work for LH. From telephones to gym memberships to shopping clubs, your employment has added value for you and your family.
Finally, remember to make the holidays the best and safest season of the year for all that you care about. —Rod

Mission Outreach: Adopt a Family Gift Giving Program
Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve is participating in the City of Westlake Adopt a Family Program again this year, a program established for the neediest of residents at the holiday season. Currently, there are over 300 Westlake residents who qualify primarily because of income.
The Lutheran Home is adopting several families, and has received specific but confidential information to help us provide meaningful gifts. These families are struggling to make ends meet.
Giving Ornaments and instructions will be on a wreath next to the Chapel doors. Those choosing to help will select a Giving Ornament and purchase a gift. Gifts need to be wrapped and delivered to Pastor Jim’s office by Tuesday, December 17th.
We ask our staff, administration, volunteers, and board members to consider participating in this expression of our faith and mission to support the needs of our community and partner with local agencies.
If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Jim Kulma at 440-871-0090 ext. 2145 or email: [email protected].

Staff Birthdays—Wishing you a happy day!
Greetings from Greg Wiechert, COO & Director of Development:
God continues to bless Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve! In the spirit of Thanksgiving… Many times during each week I hear “how beautiful the facilities and campus are!” Immediately I respond, yes, we are blessed with fine facilities, however, it is the loving, compassionate, and kind hearts of the staff that really separates us from our competitors. And without fail, the person I am engaging begins to nod their head and acknowledge that indeed, our staff is the REAL difference! We are blessed by God for having the work-force that differentiates us by our delivery of Mission-driven highest of quality care. We celebrate Thanksgiving every day for YOU as a part of our TEAM!
The Employee Survey response was outstanding—219 responses out of 320 staff members! Truly a representative sampling. The results will be shared with you in the near future. All in all, the results are very positive. Where there is room for improvement, we are addressing many of the concerns as you can see by the sharing of information at the recent Town Halls.
Mark your calendars for our Staff Christmas Celebration on Tuesday, December 10th. Details will follow. “Cast your care on the Lord and He will sustain you: He will never let the righteous fall.” Psalm 52:22 May God continue to bless you in all ways. Keep smiling! —Greg
Hope for Holiday Blues
The holidays are an emotionally charged season for many people
who are dealing with various losses, including the anniversary
of the death of a loved one.
This in-service will help staff recognize the dynamics of this grief and provide suggestions
for coping with the “holiday blues.”

Garden Train Mission in Progress
Ben Campbell is a Boy Scout from Troop 664 in North Olmsted. His Eagle Scout Project is to refurbish the Lutheran Home’s Courtyard and Garden Railroad. Ben and his family are members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Berea. His parents have been working here right alongside Ben and his scouting friends throughout the month of October.
The train track refurbishment is the major component of the project and hundreds of wheelbarrow trips have brought in sand to stabilize the train tracks. The project also includes beautifying the courtyard, and the hardworking group has done major weeding, transplanting, spring bulb planting, and hauling in mulch to beautify the garden area.
Ben has teamed up with the Northern Ohio Garden Railway Association (NOGRS). Membership extends across Northern Ohio from Huron to Canton and is comprised of over 70 families. Members bring their own special skills and individual talents to the shows and displays. The primary goal of the Northern Ohio Garden Railway Society is to have fun with model trains and let the public enjoy watching them run. The group models “true-to-life” with an occasional whimsical piece for the kids to spot.
Look for a special Christmas train display at LHCR during the coming holiday season!
Let the Baking Begin! The Lutheran Home at Concord Reserve is hosting its
4th
Annual Taste of Home Christmas Cookie Walk fundraiser on the campus Main Street on Thursday,
December 12, 2013. The Cookie Walk will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Cookies will be sold at $8 per pound. Funds raised will provide seed money to
purchase patio furniture for the large interior courtyard. We are asking for volunteer bakers to bake and donate small, homemade Christmas or specialty cookies—the more, the merrier! Cookies should be brought to the
Lutheran Home in non-returnable containers on Wednesday, Dec. 11
th (the day prior to the sale) from
9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Please contact Mission Outreach Liaison Janice Snyder at ext. 2154 or at
[email protected] by December 5th
to confirm the type (& approximate number)
of cookies you will be baking.
Thank You!

The Concord Cruisers Walk to End Alzheimer’s Team came in second in the Long Term Care Facility Fundraising competition, raising $4270 for
Alzheimer’s research. Thanks to everyone for your support
(and please join us next year!)
Thanks to all who participated in our 3rd Annual Pet Blessing. Chaplain Jim Kulma

LHCR Board member Doris Toelke and her family (above) enjoyed the event. It was a
