Together We Learn, Together We Grow

HEALTH CORNER - Water Safety Being safe in the water does not mean that you can't have fun but thinking about some very basic messages may save lives.

    • Supervision without any distractions is the single most important factor in protecting children in and around water.

    • Children under 8 must be ACTIVELY SUPERVISED by a caregiver 16years or over. Actively Supervised means: WITHIN SIGHT+WITHIN REACH at all times.

    • At the beach: Watch out for rips. ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS

    • At the river: Watch out for strong currents and submerged objects. Pick your swimming spot carefully and check it out each time.

    • At the pool: Always walk around the pool and remember to check for others before entering the water.

    • Swimming is not just exercise for the body, it is a core-life skill which all New Zealander’s need to possess no matter what their age. Some things you can do to help them become more confident in water: having water on their face, lying on their front or back and kicking, blowing bubbles, floating.
