Method One. Frequently used words. Choose a text. Select a word that is repeated 4 or 5 time in the text. Highlight it and copy the word and phrase below.

Last year, I married an American girl called Britney Spears. She used to be a singer and live in L.A, but after a few problems she decided she wanted a change. We moved to Bali and since then our lives have been very different. We don’t have much money because she spent hers on lawyers and drug rehabilitation centers in L.A. Even though we are poor, we have a good time when we go out, especially when she does karaoke. I don’t have time to spend with her very often as I have to work long hours to earn money to pay for her new clothes and shoes.

our lives have been very different We don’t have much money we have a laugh I don’t have time to spend with her I have to work long hours

Now you can see how much you really know about the word have – next slide.

Can you describe and understand the function of have in each sentence. What is it doing? How does it do it? Are there any important features you should know?

our lives 1.have been very different We don’t 2.have much money we 3.have a laugh I don’t 4.have time to spend with her I 5.have to work long hours

1. Here it is an auxiliary verb being used in the present perfect.2. Here it is used as a main transitive verb, showing possession.3. Here it is a collocation “have a laugh” is a fixed phrase that means “have

a good time”4. Again it is being used as a main transitive verb.5. Here it is being used as a modal of obligation “have to + infinitive”

showing a strong obligation, something we must do. When we use it as a modal, the pronunciation changes from /hav/ (have) into /haff/ in have to

Word family

A word family is a group of words that share the same root but have different affixes.

Look at the example

care (root)

careful

careless

carer

uncaring

ful, less, r & un are all affixes.

They can come before the root and are called prefixes.

Or, they can come after the root and are called suffixes.

They change the root to a new word and new word class.

The new words are called derivations
