I :Jl('essaye :Jr·om I.be Chairman of I.be 23oarcl .,

With 26,000 studen , 85,000 alumni, two campuses and more than 160-academic programmes, Concordia University is one of Canada's largest and most dynijmic urban universities. 1 . .

As it has for more than a century, Concordia - throllgh its faculty and graduates - is working to improve the quality of life in Montreal, across Canada and around the world. Whether in the humanities, the pure and applied sdences, the social sciences or the fine arts, Concordians continue to make their mark in almost every field of endeavour.

This p~st year, for example; our faculty and graduates were nominated for three Genje Awards, Canada's highest achievement in film making; our computer scientists won industry backing for their reseprch into the .uses of artificial intelligence; a

I management programme was launched to assist black entrepreneurs; and studies were undertaken in everything from the causes of violence against wome.n to the use of drama techniques to aid the handicapped. ·

As we made plans to celebrate our 20th anniversary in the fall of 1994, we saw reminders everywhere of the proud traditions of scholarship and cpmmunity service that made Loyola College and Sir George Williams University so widely respected. That heritag provides in'l!)iration for us in periods of gfowth; it also sustains us in periods of adversity. - This past year provided Concordia with more than its fair share of the latter. We faced a degree o,f scrutiny that was unparalleled in Canadian acacleme. Positive change will result from the experience, however.and the.lessons learned will serve us well as we carry out our twofold mission ofleaching and research. ' . · With the support ofour faculty, students, and staff.our graduates and members of

the external community, Concordia will continue to prosper and develop.

Reginald K. Groome, O.C. Chairman Board of Governors

The Members of the Corporation Concordia' University

.. I

We have audited the balance sheet of Concordia University as at May 31, 1994 and the statements of revenue and exp~nses and of changes in funds palances-for the year then ended. These financial statements are the responsibility of the Vniversity's man-agement. Our responsibility is to e}press an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. ,

We conducted our audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a tesrbasis, evidence supportrng the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An au'dit also includes assessing the 'accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the over-all financial statement presentation.. ' ·

In our opinion, these financial stateme~ts present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the University as at May 31, 1994 and the results ofls operations and the changes,in the funds balances for the yea then ended in accordance with accounting principles, as set olfl i~ Note 1 to the financial statements*.
