Boris Kustodiev, The consecration of water on the Theophany, 1921

Ps 51:3-9 — Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness; in your abundant compassion blot out my offense. Washaway all my guilt; from my sin cleanse me. For I know my offense; my sin is always before me. Against you alonehave I sinned; I have done such evil in your sight That you are just in your sentence, blameless when you condemn.True, I was born guilty, a sinner, even as my mother conceived me. Still, you insist on sincerity of heart; in my inmostbeing teach me wisdom. Cleanse me with hyssop, that I may be pure; wash me, make me whiter than snow.

William Blake, The river of life

Ezek 47:1-2,8-12 — Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water flowing out frombeneath the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the facade of the temple was toward the east; the waterflowed down from the southern side of the temple, south of the altar. He led me outside by the north gate, andaround to the outer gate facing the east, where I saw water trickling from the southern side. He said to me, "Thiswater flows into the eastern district down upon the Arabah, and empties into the sea, the salt waters, which it makesfresh. Wherever the river flows, every sort of living creature that can multiply shall live, and there shall be abundantfish, for wherever this water comes the sea shall be made fresh. Fishermen shall be standing along it from En-gedito En-eglaim, spreading their nets there. Its kinds of fish shall be like those of the Great Sea, very numerous. Onlyits marshes and swamps shall not be made fresh; they shall be left for salt. Along both banks of the river, fruit treesof every kind shall grow; their leaves shall not fade, nor their fruit fail. Every month they shall bear fresh fruit, forthey shall be watered by the flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit shall serve for food, and their leaves for medicine.".

Amen.

Introibo ad altare Dei.

Ad Deum qui lætificat juventutem meam.

Adjutorium nostrum in nomine Domini.

Qui fecit cælum et terram.

I will go in unto the Altar of God.

To God, Who giveth joy to my youth.

Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause fromthe nation that is not holy: deliver me from the

unjust and deceitful man.

For Thou, O God, art my strength: why hast Thoucast me off? and why do I go sorrowful whilst the

enemy afflicted me?

Send forth Thy light and Thy truth: they have ledme and brought me unto Thy holy hill, and into

Thy tabernacles.

And I will go in unto the Altar of God: unto God,Who giveth joy to my youth.

I will praise Thee upon the harp, O God, my God:why art thou sad, O my soul? and why dost thou

disquiet me?

Hope thou in God, for I will yet praise Him: Who isthe salvation of my countenance, and my God.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to theHoly Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shallbe, world without end. Amen.

I will go in unto the Altar of God.

Lc 7:1-10 — When he had finished all his words to the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had aslave who was ill and about to die, and he was valuable to him. When he heard about Jesus, he sent elders of theJews to him, asking him to come and save the life of his slave. They approached Jesus and strongly urged him tocome, saying, "He deserves to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation and he built the synagogue for us."And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends totell him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. Therefore, I did notconsider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. For I too am a person subjectto authority, with soldiers subject to me. And I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come here,' and hecomes; and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him and, turning, saidto the crowd following him, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." When the messengers returnedto the house, they found the slave in good health.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish oneanother, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, inword or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

ULTIMUM EVANGELIUMTHE LAST GOSPEL

Dominus vobiscum.

Et cum spiritu tuo.

Initium sancti Evangelii secundum Joannem.

Gloria tibi, Domine.

Fuit homo missus a Deo cuinomen erat Joannes.

Deo gratias.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

The beginning of the holy Gospel according to St.John.

Glory be to You, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word waswith God, and the Word was God. The same was in

the beginning with God. All things were made byhim; and without him was not any thing made that

was made. In him was life; and the life was the lightof men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the

darkness comprehended it not. There was a mansent from God, whose name was John. The same

came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was

not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of thatLight. That was the true Light, which lighteth every

man that cometh into the world. He was in theworld, and the world was made by him, and the

world knew him not. He came unto his own, andhis own received him not. But as many as received

him, to them gave he power to become the sonsof God, even to them that believe on his name:

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will ofthe flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. ANDTHE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among

us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of theonly begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth

Thanks be to God.

Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe tothe one through whom they come! If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off andthrow it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with twohands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, tearit out and throw it away.
